  1. backstory - Been having symptoms for 10-12 years. Mainly gastrointestinal in nature, cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea, etc. Frequently needing to use the restroom soon after eating. This was variously diagnosed as Lactose Intolerance (not true, I went Lactose free for a long time, and it never helped) and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (generic Catchall...
  2. Old thread, but I found it with google? I just ate a big bowl of the Cinnamen flavor puffins. Damn. Is it the oat flour? Damn. G
  3. I had symptoms for 10-12 years before figuring things out. In that time I'd be diagnosed with nutritional deficiencies, IBS, insomnia, lactose intolerance (not true, I tolerate it quite well), had nerve issues no one has solutions for, and I'm fairly certain at least two drs probably had the hypochondriacs in their notes about me. I'd never heard of...
  4. i have serious issues with my hands and feet tingling. To the point where walking can be painful/difficult. Unfortunately, I've seen little improvement since going gluten free 5-6 weeks ago. Geoff
  5. Oh, I also have fairly severe issues with my hands and feet going numb/tingly/painful for no apparent reason.
  6. I want information! Here's the story, I've posted bits and pieces before. I've had stomach/GI issues for going on 12 years. Mostly Diarrhea and loose floaty, smelly, stools. Some cramping, lot's of gas. I've also had issues with periodic insomnia. I was pescatarian/vegetarian/vegan for various portions of that time period, and always a bit...
  7. My wife and I have avoided WalMart and Sam's Club for years due to concerns about their business practices. But with their commitment to the enviroment, and their labelling of gluten-free foods, we've decided to check out the new Sam's club that just opened 5 minutes from our house. Thanks for posting this, I love Chicken! Geoff
  8. Scott, Welcome! I've recently figured out the gluten thing. I had the stomach issues, but also the pins and needles/numbness/pain in my hands and feet. It gets really bad sometimes, even making it hard to walk or type (which is important, since I work at the computer a lot). I also suffered insomnia for years, which I never even associated with the...
  9. Spring Rolls! Vietnamese style, unfried, with Fish Sauce. You can put all kinds of things in there, my wife and I make a million variations. Love them, had them for dinner tonight. Most are "naturally" gluten free. Check the following for ideas - I didn't check them all for gluten-free, but they should be or easily made gluten free. Open Original...
  10. I shop at chinese/vietnamese groceries a lot, but normally have my wife and/or mom-in-law along for help. I've found rice noodles and paper to be pretty safe. I'm pretty wary in general. I recently found some rice crackers, clearly covered in sesame seeds, that didn't list sesame seeds ANYwhere on the ingredients, so that makes me leery. But honestly...
  11. I agree that it would seem silly for say, a milk company or an egg company to label their stuff gluten free. But what about a spaghetti sauce? There is no reason it needs wheat, but I'd sure feel better if it was labeled. I guess I just feel that I'd like them to err on the side of too many labels. And having threatened companies with a "mislabeling...
  12. thanks. It was short, but good. I thought it was a shame she never really said what any of the normal symptoms are. I know they aren't pretty, but she could have at least mentioned "intestinal distress" Geoff
  13. Awesome! Thanks! Sent in my comments. Looking at Open Original Shared Link It looks as if what we really want is " 5. Option Five: Take the Proposed Action, Except Delete Wording Requirements for Gluten-Free Claims on Foods That Inherently Do Not Contain Gluten" Thanks for posting that! Geoff
  14. That's exactly it. I agree it is a choice to not be sick. I disagree that it's a lifestyle choice. I do not think that that term accurately describes the situation we're in, nor gives it the appropriate level of seriousness. From Wikipedia - In sociology, a lifestyle is the way a person (or a group) lives. This includes patterns of social relations...
  15. What time in the episode is it? Not sure I'll be able to sit through a whole episode... Geoff
  16. To me, that's like saying I have control over gravity. I choose not to jump off a building. That doesn't imply I control gravity, I'm simply forced to accept the reality of it's existence, and work with it. I feel the same way about Celiac. My worry is this, if other's beleive that it's a "lifestyle choice" will they really feel compelled to take it...
  17. I think we'll have to agree to disagree, but I strongly disagree. There is an inherent difference between making a choice like vegetarianism, and choosing to treat a disease. It's like equating an appendectomy and an eye lift. Sure, both are surgery, and you can choose not to get an appendectomy when needed, but it'd be pretty dumb. In my book, those...
  18. I have to disagree with this. It's not a lifestyle choice. I'd never choose to give up beer and pizza with my buddies. I'm forced to, because I get sick if I don't. Would you call diabetes or a peanut allergy a "lifestyle" choice? Cause that's the way I feel about Celiac disease. I was vegan or vegetarian for 12 years. That was a lifestyle...
  19. I think the first responder is correct. Celiac has the highest rates of incidence amongst people of Celtic descent (which includes Scots, not just Irish). These populations also have high rates of red hair. I'm not a redhead, but my mom and sister both are! (Scottish) Geoff
  20. On what basis did you say he don't have Celiacs? I mean, why does he think you don't?
  21. This is one I have struggled with. My only symptom other than the stomach./gi grossness. But its been bad. Sometimes I have a hard time doing normally day to day stuff, even walking. Luckily it's rare to be that bad, and it doesn''t last that long normally.
  22. I wish Fruity Pebbles would go on sale. I've always bought cereal with coupons/sales - now my options are limited, and it seems like the few available just won't firggen go on sale at my local shop. I used to be a raisin bran, grape nuts, granola, kashi kind of guy (wonder why I was always sick?!) Puffed rice just doesn't float my boat. ...
  23. Pizza! Ugh. That's the one that's killing me. Are there ANY places in California that serve Gluten free Pizza? I live in Sacramento, but travel to LA and San Fransisco Frequently. I'm a little sick today, must have missed some gluten, I'm fighting the temptation to eat pizza now since it won't change much.
  24. I've only been gluten free a few weeks, and not seeming to do a good job (or I have other food issues - ) Strangely enough, my nerve issues, painful "tingling" in my hands and feet, with numbness - How can it be painful and numb? I don't know, but it's the best description I can think of, it hurts, and tingles, but I can't feel other sensations - ...
  25. I miss Pizza. I wish there was a place around here that sold tasty good pizza that was gluten free. I miss pizza. I'm not much of a baker, but I might have to learn to be. Geoff
