ARCHIVED Sun Neen Figh Lok! - Happy New Year!
GeoffCJ replied to GeoffCJ's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Laura, Glad it worked out. My Mother-in-Law also works at a Bank, it's a BofA, but in a very Chinese/American part of town, so when you go there, everything is in English and Chinese. Chinese food is tough mostly because of the soy sauce, but watch out for other sauces too. Hoisin sauce also has gluten, as do lot's of teriyaki sauces. If... -
I put this in the coping with section, because I've been having a tough time coping, and this weekend has been great. It's Chinese New Year. My wife is ethnically Chinese, born in Vietnam, came to the US as a toddler. Raised in the San Gabriel valley (which has a huge Asian population, and is the kind of place where if you don't want to speak english...

ARCHIVED Cappuccino
GeoffCJ replied to Kalynn's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't know, but I do know that those kind of heavily processed drinks seem ripe for gluten. Treat yourself to the real thing at Starbucks! My non-fat mocha is one of the few treats I enjoyed before Gluten-free that I still enjoy. Geoff -
ARCHIVED Not Really Sure...
GeoffCJ replied to Christy-Latchford's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm also an overweight presenter. I am a very active person, I used to work as a sea kayak guide, and I'd be paddling 7 days a week, climbing with my now-wife, and running. Still I'd gain weight. My wife is tiny, about 95 lbs, and I'm 275-ish. (I've always been big, I have big shoulders and a "football" player bodytype). She constantly comment... -
ARCHIVED Off To Do My First Ironman Race
GeoffCJ replied to super-sally888's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Please do let us know how it goes. I did a 1/2 ironman a few years ago, and it kicked my ass! I certainly would not have wanted to turn around and do it again! Have fun and good luck! Geoff -
ARCHIVED I'm Going To Med School!
GeoffCJ replied to heathen's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Congratulations!!!! That's awesome. I have often thought about going to medical school. I truly believe the frustrations I've had with doctors over the last 10-12 years would make me a better doctor! Geoff -
I ate at BJ's once since being gluten free. Not much on the menu other than the potatoes, but I talked to the waitress, she was cool and check out the sauce for me, and the chicken. I also had a ceaser salad, and I got sick. I think it was the salad dressing. Now I know better. That probably doesn't help you in the slightest! I'm in Sacramento...

ARCHIVED Looking For Tnt Pizza Crust Recipe
GeoffCJ replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've been solving my pizza cravings with Rice Tortillas. Toast them with olive oil, then cover with toppings and bake again. Very thin crust, but tasty, fast and cheap. -
ARCHIVED Feeling A Little Bit Sad
GeoffCJ replied to runnerjen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I can 100% relate. I don't have too many issues when I shop in the grocery store, but I'm in an MBA program, and there are TONS of events, speakers and panels and presentations. I'm very active in my school, so I go to 1-2 events a week. Nearly all have food, often Pizza, which I love. That gets pretty hard, I've certainly felt like crying at times... -

ARCHIVED Cheese Crust Pizza For Everyone
GeoffCJ replied to Tim Meyer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm not seeing anything about online availabiltiy? Am I missing it? I bought some gluten-free pizza crusts at Whole Foods recenlty, but thought they were gross. They had this weird, sticky/crunchy textures. I then tried browning a gluten-free tortilla, browing it with Olive Oil, then covering with toppings, and baking. Loved it. Sort of the ultimate... -
Have people had good results? I thought I read that they were safe, but after I ate one today I noticed that have organic oats as an ingredient. Hmmm.... Geoff

ARCHIVED Maltodextrin
GeoffCJ replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Check out the "forbidden"list linked here. I've found it invaluable as I've been learning. My wife and I have a copy on the fridge, and take a copy to the grocers with us! https://www.celiac.com/st_prod.html?p_prodid=185 Here is what it says about Maltodextrin * 8) Maltodextrin is prepared as a white powder or concentrated solution by partial... -
ARCHIVED Peripheral Neuropathy
GeoffCJ replied to rickops's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sadly, I don't think many of us would be suprized. Many people here have stories of years and years of different symptoms, dozens of doctors, etc. I had my issues for 10-12 years, and discovered the disease after going on the South Beach Diet! Quite by accident. Geoff -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Make Their Own Noodles?
GeoffCJ replied to AmyTopolski's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Have you tried rice noodles from an Asian market? I like them even with spagetti and prefer them to the Quinoa based pastas. I'd be surprised if you could make noodles cheaper! I made past a few time in my gluten-eating days. Even then, I found it fairly time consuming, and though the efforts tasted good, I could buy good pasta cheaply, and spend... -
ARCHIVED Cottage Cheese?
GeoffCJ replied to GeoffCJ's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hmm. well neither of the two brands I have list Modified Food Starch, nor anything that jumps out at me as a problem. I guess I'll keep eating it. Geoff -
I wasn't even familiar, but had seen them mentioned on this site. Then, today I swung by the target 5 minutes by my house, and noticed in the new shops that have opened, a new Pei Wei. Woohoo! Maybe I can talk my wife into going for dinner tonight! Geoff

ARCHIVED Cottage Cheese?
GeoffCJ posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I found some stuff online that seemed to indicate that cottage cheese was not gluten-free, but other things that indicate it is. I couldn't see anything on the ingredient list.... What do you guys think? Geoff -
ARCHIVED How Can I Help Her?
GeoffCJ replied to cdfiance's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm the one in the relationship with Celiacs, to chime in and say how great and important it is to have a helpful significant other. The learning curve on the gluten-free diet is tough and steep, and having someone else to help is a huge asset. My wife has been great, and I appreciate it everyday. I'm sure your fiance does too! Geoff -
Molly Congrats!!!!!!!! I've just passed 6 weeks. I have a lot of respect for a young lady who is commited to her health, and has remained gluten-free for 15 years. It's not easy, and the fact that you're taking AP classes shows that you've got a lot going for you as well as being gluten-free. I live in Sacramento, but end up in the Stanford area...

ARCHIVED Peripheral Neuropathy
GeoffCJ replied to rickops's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Wow. Scary. I hope all turns out OK. I had stomach issues and fairly severe sensory neuropathy, as well as insomnia. Been to Dr's DOZENS of times over 10-12 years (my symptoms started around 19). I guess it wouldn't suprize me if there was a connection between sensory and motor neuropathy, and in light of her previous Diagnosis of IBS, I'd suspect... -
ARCHIVED Does This Sound Familiar
GeoffCJ replied to Christy-Latchford's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
/sounds like a fairly strong possibility. -
It's funny, for years I had periodic bouts of insomnia, and I was always a light sleeper, early riser. I never connected them to my stomach issues or problems with my hands and feet. Now, I'm the heaviest sleeper ever! I fell asleep on the coach the other night, and my wife said she just about had to drop-kick me to wake me up. And I keep sleeping...

ARCHIVED Scared To Death Of A Biopsy/colonoscopy
GeoffCJ replied to Cougar09's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Having just done one a few weeks ago, and having never had anything go "there" before, I'll say too, it wasn't a big deal. Drinking the stuff the day before wasn't much fun, but the procedure itself wasn't too bad. I notice the endoscope more than the colonoscopy, but neither was really uncomfortable, just a little _odd_. YOu'll be fine. I made... -
ARCHIVED I Guess I'm Official. Just Got My Enterolab Results.
GeoffCJ replied to GeoffCJ's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I got the package, The full panel, from enterolab. Gene Tests, etc, etc. The blood test was done through the university health care system. The said I was not reacting to Casein, and I don't think I'm reacting to Casein/Dairy, though I'm not sure. I seem to do OK, but occasionally I'm still having issues. Good luck with yours Judy! Geoff
