  1. Just be very wary. The year I was newly diagnosed I planned an elaborate gluten-free Thanksgiving dinner. I made gluten-free stuffing and gluten-free pumpkin pie with coconut milk (since I knew I had a problem with dairy too) and homemade cranberry sauce etc. I cooked like a fiend the day before Thanksgiving and tasted as I went, but on Thanksgiving morning...
  2. It is very possible to have multiple things going on at once. I was diagnosed with DH as a teen. Every year when school started this horrible itchy, blistery rash appeared on my arms. The blisters would break and it would crust over. Looking back I can see how I did it to myself. My parents gave me $1.00 for lunch every day. I spent 10 cents on an Italian...
  3. I would amend that advice to Go Gluten Free and see a Board Certified Nutritionist, not a dietician. They can order the proper nutritional testing that a dietician knows nothing about. Then, based on those results can put you on a supplementation plan. You will need to retest about every 6 months to make sure the supplements are having the desired effect...
  4. All I know is that I have 2 sons, and one has Celiac and the other gets just as debilitated by NSGS. The son who has Celiac Disease is married to a woman who also has it. Both of their sons have Celiac Disease. My husband has NSGS. It sure makes getting together for the holidays easy since everyone is Gluten Free.
  5. I have been having testing for nutritional deficiencies done for 16 years. Everything is good except for D, B12 and my antioxidant function. When they did not resolve to the doctor's satisfaction, he ordered genetic testing. I have mutations that impact those levels. I am on a wide range of vitamins and minerals and take Bentofiamine and B12 as well as...
  6. It is especially frustrating after finding a letter from the dermatologist in my parent's papers after their death, that stated my biopsy was positive for Dermatitis Herpetiformis. The biopsy was done on my arm when I was a teenager. I had a blistering, weepy, itchy rash on my arms, so even in the hot summers I kept them covered. The letter had a reference...
  7. I was diagnosed with Ataxia. We jokingly call it "My Tilt." I could not walk down a sidewalk without falling off the curb into the gutter. Someone always goes with me to walk on the outside, so I do not fall over. I would never in a million years pass a roadside sobriety test because I cannot walk a straight line and my balance is horrible. I did improve...
  8. OMG! This article could have been written about me, although I went through 2 miscarriages and 2 pregnancies long before I was diagnosed. My first pregnancy was a disaster. I was dizzy and tired the entire time, so I had to quit my job. My Blood Pressure started to climb at about 6 months. I was put on phenobarbitol, but it did not lower the BP 1 point...
  9. This line hit home for me. After I was diagnosed my sons were tested. One has Celiac Disease and the other just NCGS, but very, very sensitive. The doctor suggested the my son's wife be tested too. She assured everyone that she was fine, but the doctor said she had many of the extra-intestinal symptom. She refused testing for nearly a year. She...
  10. I have found that you must carefully check the ingredient list of every product you are going to consume. In this case it was put there by a customer too lazy to return it to its original location. However, products that have been gluten-free for years can suddenly change their ingredient list. I don't think that grocery stores have the manpower, nor the...
  11. I went grain free on the advice of my doctor many years ago because I was having issues with rice and corn. I love the Siete Grain Free Taco Shells.
  12. I have Celiac, dermatitis herpetiformis yet I am not allergic, nor sensitive to wheat! Celiac and dermatitis herpetiformis is the autoimmune reaction, which is different from an allergic reaction.
  13. Our son was being treated for pericaditis and lupus when he was a teen. Because he was on large doses of Plaquenil, NSAIDs, and Prednisone he was prescribed a PPI. Instead of just a 14 day course as now recommended, he was on it for nearly 2 years. He was misdiagnosed, so the only drug he actually needed was the steroid for the pericarditis. It was drug...
  14. You won't be totally free of symptoms if gluten is not your only problem. Once your immune system gets a break from spending all its time attacking gluten it goes after the other substances that you are either allergic or sensitive to. Many with gluten issues also have problems with dairy and yeast too. After nearly a year of being gluten-free after that...
  15. Thankfully, when I was diagnosed our doctor, who specializes in Celiad Disease, insisted that my first degree relatives get tested. My 82 year old father came back positive, which explained his lifetime struggle with a duodenal ulcer, according to my doctor. When our oledst son came back positive the doctor insisted that we address his children, who...
  16. That sounds very similar to my son's pain. However, he has been on a gluten free diet since 2007, so we know it is not that. His doctor diagnosed gastritis and put him on Prilosec. That just made things worse. This all started with a bout of food poisoning from a Mexican restaurant. After researching on our own and after speaking with our nutritionist...
  17. It could be the yeast. My allergy testing came back off the charts positive for both brewers and bakers yeast. Once I went to a yeast free gluten-free bread, my problems stopped. I think yeast, like dairy, is another thing that lots of those who cannot eat gluten have issues with.
  18. You need to be careful at Mexican restaurants and ask lots of questions. Our son just found out last week that their favorite Mexican restaurant is now using regular soy sauce to marinate the fajitas. They got a new chef and he changed the recipe. The waiter brought out the Chef who agreed to clean the grill and cook them non-marinated filet mignons...
  19. After I went Gluten Free, my lifelong battle against those mouth ulcers ended. I haven't had one in 15 years. My dentist was thrilled, and very interested in the gluten connection. I gave him several articles to read. He said he has refered many patients to the local doctor best known for treating gluten sensitivity/celiac and said that every patient...
  20. If there was a pharmaceutical to treat it, you better believe that it would be over diagnosed instead of under diagnosed. Ads on TV would send people to their doctors demanding the drug and so they would be tested at the first visit, not years after reporting symptoms. No money to be made off something that has a diet to control it, unless pharma gets into...
  21. Hoping they did the right thing does not cut it. I would recommend that you find yourself a Board Certified Nutritionist who deals with Celiac patients all the time. My diagnosing doctor referred me to a local nutritionist who probably knows more about Celiac disease than most gastros. First, he ordered testing for nutritional deficiencies via Spectracell...
  22. He is a Chiro and Board Certified Clinical Nutritionist, as many are. I was sent to him by the GI MD who said he was sorry to admit that MD's get no training in nutrition and it was out of his lane. You do not want a traditional dietician - find a nutritionist through the Doctor Search area on the acbn.org website.
  23. I am in Texas. The doctor who ordered the nutritional testing is a board certified nutritionist. He specializes in those with gluten issues. He suggested the testing. I never heard of it before he mentioned it. And yes, I am feeling great. I used to always be sick, but since following his instructions regarding diet and supplementation I can honestly...
  24. According to the Spectracell Test for Micronutrients that was administered after my diagnosis, I was low in B 12 and most everything. I was put on targeted high dose supplementation and when the test was repeated in 6 months, many deficiencies had resolved. After a year the test was repeated B-12, D and Antioxidant levels were the only ones that were still...
