ARCHIVED Feeling Worse Off Gluten?
vbecton replied to MommyL's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I certainly felt worse for a good week or two. Mine was mainly withdrawing from sugar & carbs. I felt like I had been hit by a semi! Could barely get out of bed. As far as the GI symptoms worsening, I don't have much advice other than what came out of me the first 2 weeks off gluten was other worldly . I guess my body was detoxing itself. I went... -
ARCHIVED Low Blood Sugar On Gluten-Free Diet?
vbecton replied to Kelly&Mom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hello! I have just recently (last 2 months) gotten rid of my low blood sugar problems that plagued me for years because I radically changed my diet when I went gluten-free. I was on the cusp of developing diabetes. The coating on gluten-free nuggets, the potatoes, the iced tea (if caffeinated - caffeine is a low blood sugar trigger) and the sugar in... -
ARCHIVED Protein Shake .... Need More Protein
vbecton replied to vbecton's topic in Sports and Fitness
Awesome suggestions guys, Thanks!!! I am going to try that smoothie, sounds delish And sunflower butter, yummy. I'm drinking my egg white protein shake now, but I consume far too many eggs for this to be a daily drink. Can't wait to try your suggestions. -
Hey guys, I think I've been in denial. For the last 2 months I've been following the Paleo Diet loosely. I looked up the Specific Carbohydrate Diet today and that is much more what I'm doing. Anyway, I need a protein shake that will fit my needs. Here they are: gluten-free (obviously ), Dairy FREE (no whey, casein, lactose, no traces of cow or goat...

Oh and thanks for the MyPlate suggestion. I'm going to start tracking my intake!!

Gosh Mac55, I'm not sure about the CC. You guys seem to have such a good system. And kuddos to the hubby for being such a good sport. Mine is the same way. Sure makes going gluten-free easier when everyone at home is onboard! My only guess would be you are still reacting to something. Maybe sugar in fruits? You could be fructose sensitive. Otherwise...

ARCHIVED Genetics Question?
vbecton replied to vbecton's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks Skylark! That's exactly the explanation I was needing. -
ARCHIVED Genetics Question?
vbecton replied to vbecton's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for the tips. I'm definitely on B12, as well as a boatload of other fun stuff. I'm hoping that once my absorption gets better I won't feel so tired Hi Skylark, I was hoping you would comment on the genetics portion. You are very informative on genetics!! Yes, my GI took biopsies. My Enterolab results said, "having one celiac gene and one... -
ARCHIVED New Here With Questions!
vbecton replied to RebeccaJeeper's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello and welcome. As far as the intermittent symptoms, that can definitely be the case with Celiac. That was my problem. I'm a rigid, planned eater so I eat mostly the same things over and over again. Sometimes I would eat a sandwich and get awful bloated, gassy, rumbling, nauseous, headache symptoms, etc... Then, I eat the same sandwich 2 days later... -
ARCHIVED Genetics Question?
vbecton posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Okay guys, I got my Enterolab results yesterday. I ordered Enterolab before I could get into the GI doctor, so I was desperate. My GI doctor did an endoscopy last week, which showed damage in my small intestines (full results aren't here yet) and that was after 8 weeks of gluten-free diet. My GI said there were probably enough goodies to suggest Celiac... -
Hi Mac55. I experienced the same blood sugar (or as I like to call BS) problems for over 20 years before enough malabsorption kicked in that my doctors and I concluded Celiac. The pattern of your BS is reflective of Reactive Hypoglycemia. Your body over responds to glucose and sends out too much insulin. Then, once the insulin has done its' job, there...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Shampoos & Skincare
vbecton replied to vbecton's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
TUMS HAVE GLUTEN! Geez, the list is endless and I'm glad you brought that up randomly because I used to eat Tums like candy. My GI put me on Prilosec (good thing or I'd still be eating Tums) last week. No wonder my esophagus and intestines still showed damage for my endoscopy last week after being gluten-free for 8 weeks. Hello! I was wondering why the... -
Not sure if this helps or not, but I finally had my appointment with "THE" guru celiac doctor here in Houston last week. He spent 2 hours with my mom and I discussing the testing he would do, what tests need to be done, what sort of follow up plan needed to happen, the seriousness of Celiac, etc... Basically for post-diagnosis, he told me I need to...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Shampoos & Skincare
vbecton replied to vbecton's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thank you Heidi & SGWhiskers. I totally forgot Aveeno uses oats in their products. This list is so helpful! And the coupons...you are speaking my language. Here's another good coupon site, but mainly for department stores: Open Original Shared Link This may be a silly question, but we can still react to gluten containing products if used on our... -
ARCHIVED Paleolithic Diet - Anybody Tried?
vbecton replied to motif's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Howdy. Yep, I losely follow the Paleo diet allowing myself to cheat on processed foods about 2-3 times per week (gluten-free sliced bread, etc...). This diet actually gave me my lightbulb moment that gluten was causing my problems. Plus, it was a good segway into gluten free eating because there is no gluten allowed on the diet (by default). It sure... -
ARCHIVED Very Depressive Blood Sugar Crashes?
vbecton replied to Pyro's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with tarnalberry, the Fat & Protein are musts at every meal. I've struggled with daily bouts of low blood sugar (<55, 10x per day) since I was a kid. My endocronologist and I were just waiting for Diabetes to "kick" in. Then one day a light bulb went off that my gut issues and blood sugar were related...fast forward and I am diagnosed with... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Shampoos & Skincare
vbecton posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hey guys! I've decontaminated the kitchen, now I'm on to the bathroom. I need some good suggestions for gluten free shampoos, conditioners, face cleansers, makeup. I usually try to get most of my food from Whole Foods, but we are on a super tight budget right now so my personal care products are coming from the cheap aisles! So, how about... -

ARCHIVED Enterolab Testing & Validity?
vbecton replied to vbecton's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Skylark, I appreciate your input. As well as everyone elses. You are very educated in science. However, I think both sides are relevant and there are places for both sides of the fence. I think most of us just wish science factored in more variables. It's possible. Science tries to fit every human into the same box when conducting a test and then... -
Hey Connie. Glad you are feeling better and survived that horrific experience. I have lived with SEVERE reactive hypoglycemia for over 20 years. Mine will dip below 55 several times per day. I never considered Celiac Disease was the true culprit. I've been gluten-free for about 2 months and haven't had any issues with blood sugar. SERIOUSLY...20 years...

ARCHIVED Upset Stomach - 10 Days gluten-free/df
vbecton replied to kors's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Kors, after I went gluten-free I had the most bizarre bowel movements for about 2 weeks. I never had constipation, so I know I wasn't backed up. But what came out of me was bizarre in color, quantity and everything else! Sorry to be so graphic Also, my fruit & veggie intake sky rocketed after going gluten-free so I think that has something to... -
ARCHIVED Should I Give Up My Job?
vbecton replied to Streetlegal's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
We plan food forays the way Gen. Eisenhour planned for D- day. This is necessary so we can have "lives," instead of "illness." Other people have hobbies like knitting or crossword puzzles. We read food labels in great detail and plan what we eat. I love these lines! Not only are they humorous, but they are true! Thanks for the good laugh... -
ARCHIVED Is Udi's Bread Always Frozen?
vbecton replied to Streetlegal's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep, UDI's at my Whole Foods is on the shelf, but in a separate gluten-free section. I freeze mine as soon as I get home and just pull out slices as I need them. I love Udi's bread and pizza crust!! -
Welcome! I can relate to the muscle cramps/neuro symptoms. Now that I'm on a gluten free diet, that is mainly how I can tell if I've accidently ingested gluten...I get restless leg syndrome in my legs and shoulders/arms almost like I'm having a seizure. It's crazy! Before I went gluten-free, I would get muscle cramps daily (along with lots of other symptoms...

ARCHIVED Oat Bran? Need A High Protein Shake.
vbecton replied to vbecton's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I hear you! I don't know the chemistry parts of whey and casein, all I know is that if I ingest it, my intestines go haywire In fact, I had no idea I was dairy intolerant until I stopped eating gluten. Oddly enough, I can tolerate Stoneyfield plain organic yogurt (I mix it with organic applesauce...YUMMY). I wish I was born with an owner's manual to my...
