  1. No problem, that's what we're here for Actually, the doctor didn't order the blood panel until after I had to be hospitalized because of my low nutrient levels from the malabsorption (I was in serious danger of cardiac failure). This all came about rather quickly and luckily my doctor was pretty familiar with celiacs, so she ordered the blood work....
  2. My last couple months before being diagnosed was marked with frequent and sometimes VERY urgent trips to the bathroom. Looking back, I see a lot of correlation to particular foods I ate, most high in gluten content. Until I started healing up here the last couple weeks, I had no idea you're really only supposed to go once a day
  3. Oops, see below
  4. You mean chocolate isn't considered a health food?! I always knew that food pyramid was a piece of crap I've seen lots of gluten free recipes that call for Hershey's minitures, and I think Nestle's regular chocolate is fine also. I think the chocolate labeled gluten free just means it's made in a dedicated facility. I have a Hershey bar before I work...
  5. CC refers to cross contamination. If you have celiacs or a gluten intolerance, sometimes the smallest bit will trigger a reaction. This includes such minute things as breads crumbs from a utensil or serving area that has gluten in it accidently being ingested by the celiac. Even a utensil that has flipped a gluten containing pancake can transfer enough gluten...
  6. I was just dx'd last month and had my follow up consult and blood work last Thursday. He said everything looked good on the blood work, asked how the stools were, and said he'd see me in 6 months. Said he might take another endoscopy in a year or so, but it would depend on how I was feeling then. I would think if your original scope showed a lot of...
  7. Hello and welcome You can try wrapping the sandwiches with lettuce( romaine works well) or in corn tortilla shells. The only problem with the tortillas is they are pretty stiff and need to be warmed up. I've done it both ways, and even unheated, they are edible. Assuming you do have celiacs, you might consider investing in a bread machine. They...
  8. The couple of cases and becoming pregnant weren't consecutive events, were they? I had a couple this weekend for the first time, so far so good. I like the taste of Dragon's Gold better, but it's not $3 a six pack better.
  9. Hi Joanne and welcome My favorite store bought bread is Kinnickinnick. You can get it at your local health food store and I've seen it at our local chain supermarket. There are a TON of great recipes for homemade breads, but I haven't gotten around to trying any yet. Don't let the first loaf of bread you bought get you down, the first loaf I bought...
  10. HEY JOHN I AM READING YOUR POSTS AND WE SEEM TO BE IN THE SAME BOAT I AM 38 GLUTEN FREE SINCE JAN/07 I'VE NOTICED THAT I HAVE 1 NORMAL MOVEMENT PER WEEK NOW THE REST IS ALL D AND ALSO I STRUGGLE WITH ACID REFLUX REFLUX WHICH RESULTS IN A COUGH I DO NOT KNOW HOW LONG ALL THIS TAKES BUT I LOOK FOR THE SMALL IMPROVEMENTS KEEP TRUCKING

  11. In the short time I've been on the diet( 1 month), I did seem to start feeling better when I started eating 5-6 smaller meals a day. It's kind of a pain because it seems I'm either cooking, cleaning, planning my next meal, or eating. But it seems to work good for me as I've started packing on the pounds I'd lost the last 4 months ( had major malabsorption...
  12. Yep, the thought process goes something like this; We have a grain that is proven to be toxic in 1% of the population, let's see how many more ways we can introduce it into their environment.
  13. Had to revive the "poop freaks" thread here because... I just had my first real BM in over 4 months! OMG! I 'm more excited than when the Colts won the Super Bowl. Had to share with someone, the family wasn't quite as thrilled as I thought they might be. Although I think I lost them when I invited them in for a look
  14. This distillation process stuff is way too difficult for me. I'll just stick to my Bacardi and Coke's. Too bad they call it "demon rum" for a good reason
  15. It actually worked out pretty good for me. Every Thursday all the project managers at work go to lunch for a mid-week "meeting". Usually to Applebee's, bleech! This meeting usually just turns into a b**** fest by the young lady from accounting. I hated those meetings. Alas, with Applebee's not having the greatest track record for catering to a gluten...
  16. Progresso is gluten free! Yayyy!!! That puts a whole new spin on everything! Thanks for the tip

    ARCHIVED Bacon

Oh yes, definately. I'm only a month gluten free, but fatty, greasy foods do not sit well yet. Give it some time, as you heal, you'll find you can introduce things back into your diet. But for now I'd stick with lean meats, fruits, veggies, and rice. Even high starchy foods like potatoes can be hard to digest if you haven't healed enough. I made some fried...
  18. And Thank You, for caring about your brother enough to go the extra mile and educate yourself. Please visit whenever you have questions or feel a little frustrated yourself. There is even a topic folder for friends and loved ones of celiacs. Good luck!!
  19. My colonoscopy turned up two polyps that tested to be benign( Thank God), and showed some minor inflamation that the doctor thought might be ulcerative colitis. Just saw my GI yesterday and he's not to concerned about the inflamation, being that the polyps were benign and being gluten free has already helped things out down there. He said things look good...
  20. Thanks everyone for all the great links. I was in the same boat, getting tired of the same stuff all the time. Just tonight I was looking thru all our old cook books looking for a chicken recipe I could convert and basically came to the conclusion that every chicken recipe in the world includes cream of mushroom soup My main problem with converting...
  21. Congrats to all those with upcoming nuptials! Hope you find a good gluten-free cake option. Of course, you could always call that guy on the Food Network, "Ace of Cakes". Let's see just how good he is
  22. Pertaining to the alcohol, you're actually part right. Alcohol can be a very tricky substance. It will trick your mind and your body into a lot of things that aren't physically occurring. Not feeling bloated could very well be one of them. If the mind is telling the body it wants more alcohol, and the neuro-receptors in your brain can't respond properly...
  23. It could be a modified starch which could contain both. If it says modified starch and is produced in the U.S., it is usually just cornstarch. However, if it was made outside the U.S., well, buyer beware. I like the idea of taking your own box of Argo with you and see if they'll use it for you.
  24. I would strongly endorse Danna Korn's books also. "Living gluten free for dummies" is a very handy book. I think the problem with Lowell is she kinda got full of herself after "Dangerous Grains", which was a good book for it's time. In the Gluten Free Bible I think she was too much into "avoid this, have this" mode. And we all know the problem with that...
  25. Unfortunately, that list would probably be even longer. Gluten will hide in a number of unsuspecting places, and in products you would never even imagine. My best advice is suspect everything and read every label. Carry a cell phone to the store to call the manufacturer's while you are looking at the product if you have ANY doubt. I know it seems like...
