ARCHIVED Very Gassy
johnsoniu replied to deedub's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello and welcome Fowl smelling gas is a red light for mal-absorption problems. The bloating is a classic celiac symptom also. Not everyone has really bad digestive problems as their first sign, in fact many don't. My doctor said I had probably had active celiacs for quite sometime before my gastro problems became I so bad I sought help. By that time... -
ARCHIVED Just Found Out Two Weeks Ago That I Have Celiac
johnsoniu replied to LadyBoss's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hello and welcome At the very least you should be taking a multi-vitamin. One-A-Day and Centrum I know are gluten free. Sorry, can't help on the skin thing, but I know a couple of people on the forum have diabetes as well, hopefully they will see this. Other than that, the best advice I can offer you now is feel free to ask alot of questions here. Many... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Diet And Pain
johnsoniu replied to pyoplasty's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Most of the issues you referred to are fairly common to celiacs. Sometimes the severity and length of the effects can vary widely due to age, overall health, and how long you've been damaging your body with gluten before being diagnosed. Consuming a lot of calories is not an outrageous request by a doctor, especially if weight loss and malabsorption... -
Most tylenol products are gluten-free. Here's a really good resource/link for both OTC and prescription meds: Open Original Shared Link When you go to this page, they have a link to an alphabetically listing about halfway down the page.

Thanks for the info But I have 2:1 odds that it takes Rosie about 5 minutes to make some insensitive or rude comment pertaining to weight loss

ARCHIVED Erectile Dysfunction
johnsoniu replied to Charlieswpa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've only been diagnosed for three weeks now, but my doctor said I'd probably had it for some time due to the amount of damage that was done to my intestines. Over the last few years I've never had any occurances of ED, and the last tthree months before my Dx I was just to plain tired to use the darn thing. I haven't seen anything on the connection... -
ARCHIVED What Vitamin/ Mineral Supplements Do People Take?
johnsoniu replied to hathor's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi all NowFoods makes a powder magnesium supp. that is 450mg. My doctor said I should try this until I heal a bit more because it will be easier to absorb. I also asked about the "more is better" approach to combat malabsorption, and she said it's ok for food, but to be VERY careful if you do it with vitamins and supplements because once you do start absorbing... -
NoGluGirl, I nominate that for post of the year. Job well done!

>>Hugs Stephanie<< Sorry you have to deal with this from your own family. This got me thinking again about the insensitive co-workers thread, and I think their are some similarities. When we are first diagnosed and people find out we are a celiac, most people are compassionate. A few will take the time to find out what it's all about and...

ARCHIVED How Strange My Life Has Become!
johnsoniu replied to GeoffCJ's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Personally, I'm lobbying for a handicapped parking sticker, nothing worse than making a desperation sprint from the back rows of the parking lot. Shirley, I love your sig. line about learning to dance in the rain. I use it all the time now and everyone marvels at how "philosophical" I've become. Then I tell them I ripped it off -
ARCHIVED My Insensitive Coworkers
johnsoniu replied to ElizabethN's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think that goes on everywhere. We have one of those "honor system" candy/snack boxes that constantly comes up $8-$10 short( out of a $65 dollar box). Although never outright accussed, I know I was a chief suspect because I was always in there. The first week after I started the diet and swore off the box, it came up $21 short. LOL BTW, I like... -
May I ask which magnesium supplement you are using. I'm still having some malabsorption problems, I'm eating about 4000-4500 calories a day just to keep my weight at it's current level. Do you know how much healthy food you have to eat to get that many calories? Oh well, keeps my mind off what I can't have. Crystal, sorry to hear that you have...

ARCHIVED Nutritionist From Hospital
johnsoniu replied to TinkerbellSwt's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The whole pamphlet/nutritionist thing sounds familiar. I was in the hospital suffering from the effects of prolonged malabsorption when I was diagnosed. They put me on the diet and gave me a pamphlet. I was there for four more days and the nutrionist and dining staff were totally clueless. The pamphlet said many of the same things you stated, many things... -
ARCHIVED My Insensitive Coworkers
johnsoniu replied to ElizabethN's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Good advice from everyone so far. I, on the other hand, would throw a couple boxes of the nastiest, driest, tasteless gluten-free cereal on the break room table and tell them to eat up. You probably don't want to know how I react whenever someone overheats their frozen dinner in the microwave and it explodes all over and they don't even bother... -
ARCHIVED How Strange My Life Has Become!
johnsoniu replied to GeoffCJ's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My 9 year old daughter's blood panels came back positive, so we have to take her to Riley's Children's Hospital in Indianapolis next month for the endoscopy. Last night my wife was filling out their patient questionaire and pops in the kitchen complaing about "they want to know what her poop likes like". I then proceeded to give her the short course... -
ARCHIVED How Strange My Life Has Become!
johnsoniu replied to GeoffCJ's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
How refreshing to know that I'm not insane for gauging my life by the quality of my BM's. That's why I'm so happy to have found this forum, because you all ARE the only people who would understand. -
Yes, no Girl Scout Cookies is a major downer However there is a thread in the Cooking and Baking tips Forum that has recipes or links to duplicate the Samoas and Thin Mints. Here's the link: Open Original Shared Link

ARCHIVED General Mills , Trix , Mickey Mouse Club House Crunch
johnsoniu replied to zachsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Bakery On Main and Enjoy Life both make decent granola cruch cereals in different varieties. I know some people can't stand them, but as a cereal afficiando, I think both are pretty decent.Fruity Pebbles just added a new berry flavored brand, yeah it's another sugary kids cereal(not that there's anything wrong with that ), but it's another flavor option... -
ARCHIVED Edy's Sherbert, Starbucks Beverages
johnsoniu replied to Kiki2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
All of Edy's sherberts are gluten free, as are a good number of their ice creams. They are very good on labeling and the gluten free ones are labeled as such at the bottom of the nutrional facts. This information is also available on their web site, just click on the product of your choice and it will give you the ingredients as listed on the package. Easier... -
That's great!! And who could resist big hugs from those two little angels in your picture

ARCHIVED Prozac
johnsoniu replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Open Original Shared Link lists it as being gluten free. This web site is an excellent resource for checking most prescription and OTC drugs. -
Boiled eggs are easily tranportable Yogurt( I mix in some Enjoy Life Cranapple Crunch or Berry Crunch cereal for carbs). Left-over gluten free pizza( there are several good brands available at most stores that carry gluten free products. Check out the gluten free mall products page for product reviews). Lunch meats like roast beef, turkey and ham...

Thanks Carla, I got a box of Dora's this weekend, but haven't opened them yet cause I found out about the fruity pebbles and finished off a box of those yesterday . Called my local health food store where I am getting most of my gluten free goods( the owner has celiacs, so they have a great selection and excellent references) and she hadn't heard about the...

ARCHIVED Does This Sound Like Glutening?
johnsoniu replied to CMCM's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was going to suggest the omelet also for the source. If it was pancake batter, it wouldn't be a CC issue, you'd have full blown glutening. Lots of restaraunts use pancake batter to fluff 'em up. Even if you've eaten there before and had no problems, they may have changed their recipe. A phone call couldn't hurt to check. Hope you get it figured out and... -
That all makes sense. About the only thing I really miss are my Apple Jacks and Corn Pops cereal, but things are looking up since I found out Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles are gluten free Even my wife had never heard of dieter's depression, and she's been on every diet that's come down the pike the last 15 years.
