ARCHIVED Positive Or Negative? Should Have Results Soon...
ravenwoodglass replied to *charliesmum*'s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes it would be easier. You may not have what a lot of doctors consider to be classic celiac symptoms but I bet your mouth ulcers will go away and you will feel better over all. -
ARCHIVED Positive Or Negative? Should Have Results Soon...
ravenwoodglass replied to *charliesmum*'s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
No matter what the results of your tests it would be a good idea to try the diet yourself if you are having any symptoms. False negatives are always a possiblity with testing. -
ARCHIVED Low B-12?
ravenwoodglass replied to SunshineStateGirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
These are the tests you need to have to rule out celiac: Anti-gliadin (AGA) IgA Anti-gliadin (AGA) IgG Anto-Endomysial (EMA) IgA Anti-Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA Deamidated Gliadin Peptide (DGP) IgA and IgG Total serum (IgA) Your doctor only did the TTG and the total IGA. You may want to ask him to do a full panel on you. Even with a full... -
ARCHIVED Ignorant Grocery Cashier
ravenwoodglass replied to Kimbalou's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Okay now it makes more sense. I couldn't understand how someone who was feeding a celiac child could have so little knowledge about the disease. As Irish suggested maybe you could print out some info to give her next time you see her. Make sure you let her know not to go gluten free till after she gets tested. -
ARCHIVED Ignorant Grocery Cashier

Unless this womans daughter was grown when she was diagnosed and they never talk or visit I would wonder how she could be so unknowing about even the basics of the diet. -
ARCHIVED Losing It... Help!
ravenwoodglass replied to JennyMay's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
So sorry that you have been hit with this on top of all your struggles. I am very low income also and it can be hard but it is doable. Rice and beans are inexpensive and also may be available at your food bank. Single ingredient canned or frozen veggies and fruits are also safe and should also be available. I volunteer at a food bank and when someone like... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Sensitivity Medscape Article
ravenwoodglass posted a topic in Publications & Publicity
A good article on Medscape on NCGI "The aim of this perspective is to address some of the fundamental problems associated with the condition known as gluten sensitivity or nonceliac gluten sensitivity. Specific problems addressed include lack of a standard definition for gluten sensitivity, lack of diagnostic criteria, difficulty determining rising gluten... -
ARCHIVED Confused With Celiac Diagnosis
ravenwoodglass replied to Ziva's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Enterolab testing has not been peer reviewed and many doctors do not accept the testing as evidence of celiac or gluten intolerance. There are some doctors who do recognize the testing as having value though Enterolab themselves state they do not diagnose either celiac. The test can have value for some folks especially if they then eliminate gluten (and... -
ARCHIVED Low Iron Level With High B12 Level
ravenwoodglass replied to Golden Girl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
May not be the case but are you taking a vitamin with folate? From what I have read (sorry don't have time to find the link) that can cause falsely high B12 readings. -

Glad the yams and steak are sitting well. Maybe the hot dogs, even though bison were just too greasy for your system. If the yams set well stick with them for a few days with your steak or perhaps a chicken breast. Do try to avoid any processed stuff organic or not. Single ingredients right now are the way to go. -
ARCHIVED Working At Subway
ravenwoodglass replied to wind-decor's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had a job not long ago that required feeding lunch to a large number of children every day. I thought it would be okay because the food was deliverd alreay made. I wore gloves for that and also when working with crafts with the kids. It wasn't long before I realized the gloves really didn't protect me as much as I thought they would and I had to leave the... -
ARCHIVED Saw The Nutritionist

What you can do for us is get better. Glad to hear you feel better now that you have had some protein. I've always wanted to visit the Black Hills, but I am sure by the time I could get there you will be eating much more than broccoli. It is hard when family isn't around and it must be hard watching your freind go through what she is going through... -

May not be feasible but could your students maybe come to your home for a bit? I know that most likely won't work but I am worried about you. Can you eat eggs? Those are a good source of biotin and B12. -

Will your doctor give you B12 injections? If you set them up you might be able to just go in and have a nurse give you the shot without having to set up an appointment. You keep referring to your shop. Are you the only one that works there? If you are, as hard as it might be, it may be time to close for at least a couple of weeks or try and find someone... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Diet Already, Do I Really Need Testing?
ravenwoodglass replied to RuskitD's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is your body and your choice whether to test or not. As you know for you to be tested for celiac you do need to go back to eating gluten for a couple of months. If there is no way you can do that then you have your answer IMHO. -
ARCHIVED Newbie Wants To Say Thank You
ravenwoodglass replied to RuskitD's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Welcome to the board. Glad we were able to be of some help to you. Please feel free to ask any questions you need to ask. -
I am not familiar with the saliva testing so I can't give any answers as to that. Celiac can cause rashes with dermatitis herpeformis being one of them. Have you seen a dermatologist for the rashes? They can biopsy next to the rash and look for the antibodies but they do need to be looking for it to do the proper procedure in the lab. It might be a good...

ARCHIVED Food You Dont Have To Cook
ravenwoodglass replied to Fairy Dancer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Baked chicken takes no prep really. Just rinse it off and toss it in the oven at 350 for an hour or so until done. You could sprinkle with some salt before cooking and do enough so you have some left over to stick in the fridge for sandwiches or a cassorole. If you stick a metal fork into a raw potato that will cook up quickly and be done at the same time... -
ARCHIVED Tendonitis And Broken Bones
ravenwoodglass replied to chi1968's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The inflammation we get can have some nasty effects on the muscles, tendons and joints. I have definately had my share of issues most of which resolved when I had been gluten free for a while and the inflammation went away. However with it being your big toe, having no relief when your off it and with it's sudden appearance you may want to run this by your... -
ARCHIVED Saw The Nutritionist
ravenwoodglass replied to bartfull's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I do agree it is hard. Without one though I would have never been diagnosed. My allergist also said my system was in hyperdrive. I was reacting to everything, 98 out of 99 things he skin tested me for, and after I healed only 3 of the allergies and one other intolerance remains. My doctor set up the diet a bit different though. Instead of giving me a long... -
ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed With Celiac Disease
ravenwoodglass replied to ChristenDG's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes you do need seperate mayo, nut butters, butter etc. You don't need to replace dishes but you do need a seperate, new toaster and new strainer for gluten-free pastas. And yes your DH does need to brush his teeth before kissing if he is a gluten eater or drinker. You should replace scratched non-stick cookware and cutting boards and wooden utensils. You... -
ARCHIVED Genetic Question...
ravenwoodglass replied to Lizzylulu's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Nope US born and raised. Interestingly my genes are usually genes that are found in the Middle East or Asian population and considered celiac associated genes there...but my parents were German, Dutch (Dad) and Welsh, Irish and English (Mom). There is still an awful lot to be learned about celiac associated genetics. -
ARCHIVED Crestor
ravenwoodglass replied to Worriedwife's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You could try calling the company that makes it and asking if it has any wheat based ingredients. If you put the companies name and the words contact information in a search engine you should be able to get a phone number. -
Hi Molly. Great news about the degree! Thanks for the upbeat update.

Since you have been gluten free for a year you would need at least 3 months back on a full gluten diet before testing and you could still have a false negative. If you were diagnosed by a doctor's testing then you are celiac. You may have healed enough so that small amounts of gluten don't seem to bother you but the antibody reaction is still likely going...
