  1. My old manx is fond of doing that also even though they have not only their own bowl but also the dogs to drink out of. I give him his own glass by the food bowls. That seems to help but I still use a napkin to cover my glass or cup if I leave the room since I caught him doing it with my coffee cup one day. Glad you were able to rescue her from what sounds...
  2. Keep in mind that you could still have a false negative with testing. It sounds like you need to the diet no matter what the tests results. If you need a 'formal' diagnosis for some reason do talk to the doctor about how much better you were on the diet and how miserable the challenge was. Also if your income is really low talk to the finacial folks at...
  3. Artificial flavors are not a problem. With some companies natural flavors can be an issue. Hormel will label any gluten containing ingredients, including barley as far as I know, as will Kraft and Unilever products. If you want to be absolutely safe the best thing to do is to make stuff from scratch. Hormel does have this at the top of their gluten free...
  4. Go to your local food bank. Explain that you are gluten free and please do not give you bread or breaded items or pasta. Food banks will always have rice and beans and veggies and fruits. Ours always have things like eggs and butter and even some form of meat. You may still get some items you can't use so simply donate them back. If you are very low income...
  5. If your doctors are not concerned you should try not to be either. Many things can cause enlarged lymph nodes and not all are dire. The inflammation from celiac can do it and it does take a very, very long time for them to go down. The spleen is I think a sort of filter and if the amount of increase was something to worry about the doctor should let you know...
  6. Not everyone gains weight on the diet and usually those that do are folks that were underweight to begine with. I lost weight in the first month, about 20 lbs and was afraid it would just keep dropping but it leveled out after that month and I have stayed steady. As to the tiredness you may be going throught withdrawl, quite a few of us do, and if you are...
  7. Gosh you are going through so much and it makes me so angry when doctors try to tell us that 'we want to be sick'. You have gotten some great advice from others but please if the doctor will not listen try the diet on your own. One thing, you mentioned a rash. If it itches and burns and leaves purplish scars that are very slow to fade it may be DH. If that...
  8. As Lisa said Hormel is quite a reliable company. Do keep in mind that reactions can be delayed so what he just ate may not be what he is reacting to. Also if still healing things that are really spicy may be an issue. You mention being new to this. Have you done what you need to do to prevent cross contamination in your home. A new toaster for gluten-free...
  9. It could be long enough since you have only been gluten free for under a month but it could also be a false negative. The challenge may tell you what you really need to know if you react badly to it.
  10. If you feel you need to be tested then go back on gluten for at least 2 to 3 months. If your symptoms return after you add gluten back in that is pretty diagnostic in itself. Be aware that there are false negatives on testing, with both blood and biopsy. It is how your body reacts that counts the most. With a strong family history of celiac and your good...
  11. Not surprising at all. I was told by my son that I was aging backwards. Always nice to hear. Glad things are going well for you and thanks for sharing the good news.
  12. It should only take a couple of weeks or so. As the previous poster said you can start the diet the day the biopsy is done. With positive blood work you need the diet no matter what the biopsy results are.
  13. As long as he hasn't been gluten free yet there is no reason to wait to do the blood tests. Your doctor should be able to let you pick up or call in the lab request without waiting for an appointment. As mentioned false negatives on the scopes are not unusual, do you have the results of the scope in hand? If so post them as some doctors are not as knowledgeable...
  14. Your in a tough spot. How are you feeling on the diet? Is it helping? Blood work and biopsies both have high rates of false negatives so you need to keep that in mind. If you stay on the diet and it takes care of the problems you are having that is really an answer in itself. Kids have an even higher rate of false negatives than adults, when you are done...
  15. Most makers will tell you to check the ingredients of their products when you purchase. Calling the maker is a good idea but lists are basically out of date the day after they are posted as ingredients can change. Double checking is always required. It's a pain but it is something we have to do. What annoys me even more is companies that make copious lists...
  16. For any celiac testing you need to go back on gluten for at least 2 to 3 months and even then you may still have a false negative. If you going gluten free helped with issues you were having you don't need a doctors permission to stay gluten free.
  17. After you are done having the tests run that were mentioned do try the diet no matter what the results. Children have an even higher rate of false negatives than adults. Does he have a rash anyplace other than his bottom? Is the rash blistery and itchy? The rash could be DH and that would be diagnosed by a derm who would biopsy the area next to the rash to...
  18. Glad to hear you got checked out and I hope your feeling better today.
  19. I agree with Mushroom. For me it took an allergist to help with my starting foods and while it was a very boring way to eat for while it was what lead to me finally being diagnosed.
  20. Actually there is quite a bit of research out there. This is a good place to start but a search of PubMed will bring up quite a bit. Open Original Shared Link I should note that in most cases following the diet strictly takes care of many of the associated risks of miscarriage and infertility.
  21. Well after multiple phone calls and lots of waiting I finally got a definate answer from Hornsby's. There is no barley used in the processing. I wish they would just say that rather than it test's at ----. So it should be safe for even those of us who are very sensitive.
  22. In additional also check for codex wheat starch in products. Most of do not tolerate it.
  23. Welcome to the board. Glad your feeling better. It can be amazing how much the diet can help and how few doctors know how often the tests are a false negative. It's wonderful to hear you are getting your health back.
  24. Be sure to keep in close contact with your neuro. I have also been on depakote to control seizures that were celiac related. Hopefully your doctor is doing the very frequent blood level checks that are needed. After you have healed a bit you may not need to drug and longer. However be sure you don't stop the drug suddenly talk to your doctor about how to...
  25. It sounds like he has gluten sneaking in somewhere. We can become much more sensitive to small amounts after our body has healed a bit. Have you changed out scratched pots and pans, colander, cutting boards and does he have a new dedicated toaster? What changed a month ago? Did he start a new script or vitamin? Is he eating a new food that he wasn't before...
