  1. In particular the gastritis can be directly from the gluten reaction and I don't know for sure about the hiatial hernia but I do know a lot of us have them. If your doctor decides you need an acid blocker or a PPI you may want to try the diet and pepto bismal first before the meds. There is a good chance you won't need them and they can be hard to get off...
  2. I would look forward to not taking it also. How long have you been on it? It is an form of speed, in street lingo, and is quite addictive and has a lot of side effects. Be sure to check with your doctor when you decide to try life without it. You may need to taper off it and if you have been on it for a while your doctor would be the best one to guide...
  3. If you had ordered the gene test they would have sent you a cheek swab to do it with. I don't remember how much it is, I think it was around $100. I just ordered mine out of curiosity 4 years after I was diagnosed and because my DD had her genes done and used that as a way to say 'see I don't have celiac and will never develop it because I don't have the...
  4. I had a bit of withdrawl but it really wasn't any worse than most of my regular days before I went gluten-free. I got a little moody but that was a small price to pay since my stomach pain and intestinal cramps and D were gone within just a few days. Not everyone has any withdrawl but it is important to know it can happen. It is generally a mood thing...
  5. In my familial experience there is a sort of a corelation between celiac and alcoholism. My fathers side of the family has a gene for male pattern violent alcoholism. The males who inherited this trait are alcoholics and also had medical historys that pointed strongly to celiac. Celiac also seems to effect the preference for alcoholic beverage in them...
  6. Fiddle Faddle they are in Sweden but you still have an excellent point as the same issues exist there.
  7. I have not used that lab but I used enterolab for the soy and casien. The stool testing actually tends to be more accurate than blood testing. No matter what the blood test results you should get on the diet unless you plan to have an endoscopy. Welcome to the boards and ask any questions you need to. You may have now found the key to recovering your health...
  8. Yes, gluten is a neurotoxin for many and can cause depression and anxiety issues. It will pass without the need for meds. Try and do something pleasant and relaxing and keep things low stress until it does. To try and stave off BS issues you should try to eat at least a little bit and make sure you get some protein. Even a few gluten free nuts and...
  9. I would try to get a picture of her doing it and then throw it back. You definately need to do something if you can.
  10. That was a good catch, I agree I think this is the unsafe listing. Any of their teas that are gluten-free say so clearly on the box.
  11. If you have seen no differnce at all in addition to doing a challenge I would also eliminate dairy. Be aware that a challenge with gluten may not show a reaction for 3 or 4 days after you add it back in. If you are still heavily symptomatic you may want to consider eating just plain rice, fresh nothing added chicken, applesauce and perhaps peas or another...
  12. It can be hard when you have to stay with people that just don't get it yet. One thing that might help would be to get a big plastic bin and put nonperishable food items into it and store it in your room. You could even put a setting or two of dishes and in there that you would wash after use and then put back. That will also give you a safe place to store...
  13. Glad you are feeling a bit better. Having done both I found the Enterolabs tests to be much easier than elimination. For me it was well worth the expense.
  14. What may be occuring is that as you have gone gluten free you are now more sensitive to things like CC. One of the first things you need to do is take a good look at what you were eating the 3 or 4 days before your tummy gets nasty to you. I strongly suspect what has occured is you are no longer a 'silent' celiac. This is not always a bad thing. As to...
  15. Another thing that can cause this in celiacs is nerve damage from the disease. You may want to try a sublingual B12 to help with nerve function. My DS has suffered from this most of his life, not a great thing for a young man trying to gain weight as it makes him feel full very quickly when he eats certain foods. Being gluten-free and the B12 have helped...
  16. So many of us have dealt with the 'it's all in your head' syndrome. When I lost the ability to walk I was offered prozac, when I couldn't get through the night without waking with shaking, sweating, pass out pain from 3 straight hours of D every night I was given.....valium. When my children started showing celiac tummy problems they just didn't want...
  17. Lisa did they do any blood work on you while you were in the ER? Are you feeling any better? You mentioned the doctor said to wait to give a stool sample, is there any way you can see a differnt doctor with a baggie in hand? Their wanting you to wait makes me wonder if they thought you were just a 'crazy PMS' case and will go away once your period is over...
  18. Carmel coloring is made by heating a starch, and that starch can be a gluten grain starch. Most times it is corn but not always. You do need to check with those. Be aware though that if it tests below a certain level the company can say it is gluten free so it is best to ask where the carmel color comes from rather than just asking if the product is gluten...
  19. It seems to help me. I don't use capsules though, I like cinnamon so I just make sure I get a the equivelent of 1 tsp (the recommended amount) over the course of a day. If I have had a meal with a lot of high glycemic index foods I try to end it with a 1/2 cup of applesauce, organic and unsweetened, with a good spoon of cinnamon mixed in. Personally I...
  20. Believe me if anyone understands it is me. Since I don't show up in blood work I had a very long, very painfilled 15 years before I was finally diagnosed. If you felt better off of gluten I think you have your answer already. I hope you feel great soon.
  21. I would say with his other scores yes even if he is not technically gene defined celiac. He is most likely not absorbing much of anything at this point. Hopefully this will turn around quickly once he is gluten and casien free. I would get him on the diet as soon as possible. He also should be taking a good gluten free supplement and an additonal sublingual...
  22. Also make sure they do an A1C on you, this is a 3 month measure of your average blood sugar. It can be helpful in telling whether your high because of illness, any can raise your sugar, or because you are prediabetic. One piece of cheesecake a day even for three days shouldn't be out of order unless you also feasted on lots of other high carb sugary stuff...
  23. Some of us never show up positive in blood tests no matter how sick we are. Others have doctors that look at the panel and if the result is only a point or two into the positive they will consider it negative or inconclusive. The best way to know for sure if the diet helps you is to do it strictly for at least 2 months. Biopsies miss many of us, either...
  24. To put it simply, your stomach had some inflammation and your intestinal mucosa showed signs of swelling and redness. All could be a result of gluten intolerance reactions. Your biopsies will be the most telling. But do remember that even if your biopsies are negative you still need to try the diet for a while to be sure. Damage, especially in the early...
  25. A gluten challenge is when you have been gluten free and feeling better and then load up on gluten and look for a reaction. When you react it is a positive result for that food. It is a helpful form of diagnosis for those of us who do not show up on blood work. Too bad it took doctors over 15 years to think to suggest it. It was the way my allergist...
