Hi Jenn I don't know about Colgate but the test for B12 is called just that. Ask them to check you B12 levels and while they are at it have them check folate and iron as well.

ARCHIVED Almost Had To Go To The Hospital
ravenwoodglass replied to Celia the Celiac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Do you know for sure that the sausage and the beans and rice are gluten free? At the party did you drink anything? -
ARCHIVED Ct Scan
ravenwoodglass replied to gymnastjlf's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Not all are. Call the hospital and your doctor as soon as you can and DEMAND that they make sure it is gluten free and that they put it in writing. Many times the techs will not know and you need to make sure well in advance. If they will not put in writing that the preperation is gluten-free go elsewhere for testing. -
ARCHIVED Difference Between Celiac And Crohns?
ravenwoodglass replied to Chako's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Celiac can cause chrons type symptoms. The blood work for these is different, in Chrons they are looking for signs of inflammation and infection and in Celiac they are looking for antibody reactions. There is a great deal of overlap in the two conditions and anyone with Chrons should give the gluten free diet a try to see if it helps. No matter what the... -
ARCHIVED Still Stomach Problems After 7months Gluten Free
ravenwoodglass replied to wendyb's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
First off welcome and ((((((((hugs))))))). All I can add is that Ursula gave you some great and very accurate advice. The one thing I want to add is that when you add back in a food item you should make it in as 'pure' of a form as possible. gluten-free baked goods, for example, should only be added back in after you know you don't react to the individual... -
ARCHIVED Finally No More Tests...
ravenwoodglass replied to Lister's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am so happy for you that you at last had a good outcome from the discussion with your doctor. I am also quite relieved about the negative parasite test, gluten free is enough to deal with. Be patient with your body you may still have some ups and downs for a while as you heal. You were so lucky that they found this when they did and that your doctor... -
ARCHIVED Just Curious As To How You Achieved Diagnosis
ravenwoodglass replied to Chako's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
IMHO the 'mildly celiac' diagnosis is the same as being a little bit pregnant. My DD was told she was 'a little bit' celiac after her endo. The doctor told her it would be fine if she just continues to eat it. Just keep taking the prescription antiacids and antidepressants until she gets sicker. He also did say that it would be okay if she wanted... -

ARCHIVED Just Curious As To How You Achieved Diagnosis
ravenwoodglass replied to Chako's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was very ill for a very long time and my children were diagnosed with failure to thrive (DS), GERD, depression and 'the I don't want to go to school symdrome'. They did blood test me for celiac repeatedly but I always came out negative. I was diagnosed by my allergist through an elimination diet and then that was confirmed by my GI doctor. I was not... -
ARCHIVED Question About "clubbing"
ravenwoodglass replied to Chako's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This could be a genetic thing as you are seeing it in other family members. It also could be the result of other things. I would ask my doctor about it. Is your son on a gluten-free diet? He sounds like my DS as a child. Has he lost ground since birth? For example my DS was born in the 65th percentile but was in the -10 by a year and since he wasn't... -
First ((((((hugs))))). I hope you feel better soon I know it can take awhile but it will get better.

Add my whole family to the list. We also found that we get these from topical applications like shampoos and makeup that are not gluten-free so I'm real diligent about calling companys about everything from soaps to sunblock.

ARCHIVED Some Symptoms Diseapering
ravenwoodglass replied to Lister's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The hunger may be your body healing and saying it wants more nutrients. It is not harmful to grab a healthy gluten-free snack when this happens. I still get bad stomach pains sometimes like you describe what helps me the most is good old Pepto Bismal. It amazes me how quickly it gives relief. It may not help you but anything its worth trying, just be... -
Hi, and welcome. I had severe neuropathy and ataxia and it did turn out to be directly related to gluten. It has been relieved for the most part but it did take a few months. I also saw relief from a lot of my other allergies gluten-free. I would continue the gluten free diet, excluding wheat, rye, barley and oats form everything including your toiletries...

ARCHIVED Some Symptoms Diseapering
ravenwoodglass replied to Lister's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, what I was trying to say is that the folds and scalloping are why he told you to do the diet. He did not just pull the diagnosis out of the air. These are the early stages of intestinal damage from gluten intolerance. This is why he diagnosed you with gluten intoelrance, sensitivity or whatever you choose to call it. Your doctor seems to be very through... -
ARCHIVED Food Family
ravenwoodglass replied to evie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, I am glad the diet is helping you a bit. Lamb and mutton are from a different family than beef. I believe goats would be in the same family as sheep but don't expect you'll be eating too many of those. Buffalo meat which is readily available in my local markets would be related to beef though. I also just wanted to make sure you know that oatmeal in... -
ARCHIVED Observations After 4 Days W/o Gluten
ravenwoodglass replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am one of the unfortunate folks who kept testing negative on blood tests. Noone ever mentioned the diet even though I have DH. The trusting of the blood tests, by my doctors, delayed may diagnosis by over 5 years, horrible horrible years. This has left me with permanent damage to my nervous system and to my pancreas (recently diagnosed diabetic). It... -

ChelsE off topic but are you a 'night and day twin'? My brother and I were, him blonde and light skin blue eyes, me very dark with green eyes. We used to joke they got our legs mixed, he had nice girly ones I had sticks. And I don't think you look pudgy, jsut healthy -
ARCHIVED Need Diet Info And Ataxia Info Please!
ravenwoodglass replied to Jennhaz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This could be nerve damage from celiac but it could be other stuff too. It does not however sound like ataxia, more like neuropathy. Ataxia makes you feel like you are very off balance and on the verge of falling. While you are trying to figure all this out it won't hurt to immediately start taking a sublingual B12 vitamin in addition to your regular... -
Make certain also that your shampoos and soaps are gluten-free. I lost a great deal of hair but it has grown back. The hairloss didn't stop though until I became as rigid about my toiletries as my diet. I also take a gluten-free vitamin that is specific for hair and skin with a lot of the B vitamins. It takes a long time it seems to grow but hopefully...

ARCHIVED Annatto And Disodium
ravenwoodglass replied to LyndaK's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Most dextrin is fine but, and this is a big but, it can be derived from wheat. The few times I have seen this it was clearly labeled ie "dexrin from wheat" but I call the manu if they don't name the source. It can also come from tapioca which is also celiac freindly. -
ARCHIVED Dinty Moore
ravenwoodglass replied to Jennhaz's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The modified food starch in this is potato starch, last I checked their scalloped potatoes and ham was gluten-free also but call first as I haven't checked that in a while. If you call the company they will send you a list of gluten-free products and coupons. Now if someone would just make a boxed gluten-free scalloped or augratin potato I'd be real happy... -
ARCHIVED Lunchmeat
ravenwoodglass replied to sdore's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hormel has come out with a line of all natural gluten free and marked as such, lunch meats. Just look for the brown package, and their pepperoni has been labeled gluten-free for as long as I have been looking. I know most lunch meats are supposed to be safe but I would rather not have to call a company, and I do even if it appears okay- been got too many...
