ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge
ravenwoodglass replied to Kazza40's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you were doing well on the diet until 4 months ago look back and see if you can figure out what may have changed. New med, supplement, change in formulation of a food you eat, new restaurant that you are going to, new significant other who eats gluten, new toiletry that contains gluten, new pet or hobby, home remodeling, new job working with gluten items... -
ARCHIVED Prednisone
ravenwoodglass replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have heard that it can impact the biopsy but I don't know that for sure. Since your biopsy is only a day away you could hold off until after the biopsy is done. It may not be the med that is making the rash worse but the gluten you are eating before the biopsy if the rash is DH. Do make sure the med is gluten free and do start it up the day of the biopsy... -
ARCHIVED 1St Celiac Md Visit
ravenwoodglass replied to Hornet's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your having been gluten free since May may very well effect your testing. Also be aware that if they are only checking for DQ2 or DQ8 that you can have celiac or issues with gluten even if you don't have those genes. Does the diet seem to be helping you? It does take some time to heal so even if you have only seen a small amount of improvement do keep with... -
ARCHIVED Brain Mri And Celiac
ravenwoodglass replied to Medcoder03's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Gee Takala I wonder if we shared the same neuro. Mine told me the lesions meant nothing and I just wanted to be sick. Then gave me a script for an antidepressant. Another one did electromylograms on my legs (where they stick needles in your legs and then put a current through them. One leg was almost normal but the other showed no electrical impulses going... -
ARCHIVED Brain Mri And Celiac
ravenwoodglass replied to Medcoder03's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you have gluten ataxia then they will often be able to see what are called UBOs or unidentified bright objects. They look like bright white spots. Unfortunately many neurologist are not aware of what they are and they can at times be mistaken for the lesions found with MS. When they are mistaken for MS lesions a spinal tap can rule out MS if the debris... -
ARCHIVED Biopsy Odds
ravenwoodglass replied to Gluten-Freed's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hopefully your doctor told you to go ahead and get on the diet. If not you should do so. Even if by some chance the biopsy is negative you are still one of us with the results from the bloodwork and the visible scalloping. Read as much as you can here and ask any questions you need to. -
ARCHIVED Please Read & Respond
ravenwoodglass replied to DogWalkerNYC's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Ditto. I haven't had a migraine since I went gluten free. Except for a couple of times when I was severely glutened by accident. -
ARCHIVED Advice On Re-Glutening
ravenwoodglass replied to parmeisan's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes there are people that don't have celiac but they would not have positive blood tests. What some doctors call false positive bloods are people who had positive bloods but a negative biopsy. A true false positive on blood tests is very, very rare. The gluten free diet will not hurt anyone. It is not higher in sugar unless someone wants it to be. People... -
ARCHIVED List Of Gluten Free Grocery Items?
ravenwoodglass replied to hnh's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The tests that Skylark listed are the tests you need. Any doctor can order them for you but many doctors will want you to see a GI doctor for a biopsy if they are positive. The choice on whether to do that is yours to make as if the blood tests are positive you do need the diet. However false negatives on testing are not uncommon so after all Celiac related... -

ARCHIVED You Might Be Celiac If.......
ravenwoodglass replied to AVR1962's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
YMBCI... Your listing something for sale on an auction site and after it is listed you discover instead of saying the item is made with glue you use the word 'gluten' instead. -

ARCHIVED Maybe This Gluten Challenge Is Too Challenging For Me...
ravenwoodglass replied to heathenly's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Talk to your doctor. Depending on the severity of your symptoms when you reintroduce gluten some doctors will stop the challenge and give you an 'official' diagnosis. For some a gluten challenge just makes them a little ill, some feel awful but can still function and some will be incapitated. Only you can judge whether or not you can continue. Depending... -
ARCHIVED Glutened By Cat Litter?
ravenwoodglass replied to DogWalkerNYC's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I use plain clay based litter, the cheapest I can find, and some folks will add plain baking soda to it to control odors. I wouldn't use the wheat based since I don't want to breathe in the dust and kitties will track the wheat all over and when they clean their paws they can distribute the wheat all through their coats. The same applies to pet food with... -
ARCHIVED Advice On Re-Glutening
ravenwoodglass replied to parmeisan's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Did they do a total IGA for you? If your total IgA is low that would make IgA testing worthless. The test you did come back positive for is one of the newest and best tests for celiac. The fact that it is positive is significant and I think raises the likelyhood that you are celiac higher than 60%. -
ARCHIVED Don't Know What To Do ?
ravenwoodglass replied to tennisman's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It may not be the case for you but for me it was realized that my main issue was the anxiety. I was a bit depressed but that was a direct result of the anxiety issues not due to a brain imbalance. When given the drugs that are combo drugs for both I not only didn't get any better I got worse. Once the anxiety was taken care of I was then able to do more of... -

ravenwoodglass replied to RonSchon's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications

ARCHIVED Rip Ernest Borgnine
ravenwoodglass replied to psawyer's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Andy and now Ernest. A sad week. -
Call the maker to find out. If you have the scripts filled already their name should be on the bottle. If not call the drug store and ask. If the scripts are not filled yet ask when going to fill them what company makes them before picking them up. Most companies you can get their phone number by putting their name and the words contact info in a search engine...

ARCHIVED What Am I Supposed To Eat?
ravenwoodglass replied to Sage122's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
There is a lot you can eat but much of it you will have to cook. A rice cooker is helpful. You can make rice in the bottom and they will have a steamer basket you can load with things like Chi-Chi (garbanzo beans) or any other kind of drained and rinsed bean, veggies, fish or shrimp etc. Most will come with a lot of recipes. If you make a good quantity it... -
ARCHIVED A Relative Is Diagnosed Celiac- Won't Go Gluten-Free
ravenwoodglass replied to LeahBanicki's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Can you get her to come here and talk to us? Maybe we can help her realize that no matter how far her disease has progressed the diet can help. Some of us just are so sick we have no hope before diagnosis and it is hard to grasp the idea that so much of our pain can be caused by what we are eating. That combined with the withdrawl can make the first weeks... -
ARCHIVED Stopped Smoking
ravenwoodglass replied to GF Lover's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Acupuncture can be very helpful with quiting smoking. If you have a practioner near you maybe give them a call. I went to a naturopath for a short time that would do both acupuncture and massage. There are also pressure points that you can massage yourself with acupressure that can help. I hope you will pick up that camera again. I know the feeling and... -
I volunteer at a place where we have a table full of different baked goods that people can have. Every once in a while we get potato bread or rolls in. Can't count the number of times someone has plopped down a package and said 'Look we have some bread you can eat today'. Yea right cause that potato bread is made with just mashed taters. Also frequently...

I don't know if they make chewing tobacco but after diagnosis I switched to a totally additive free tobacco made by a company called Natural American Spirit. Their cigs and tobacco are just tobacco nothing else. Incidentally I went from being a pack a day smoker to someone who now smokes the equivalent of a pack a week with no effort whatsoever. 3 drags...
