  1. In some instances, I've noticed my stomach burning within just a few minutes. However, 20-30 minutes is the norm for me. Recovery time can be anything from a few hours to a couple of days. Depends on the severity.
  2. Chipotle rules! We eat there at least once a week!
  3. I get the same itching problem when I get glutened. I think the Benedryl suggestion is great - that's what I do. A cold shower to calm the hot irritated skin or a cool bath w/ black tea bags helps too (the tanic acid is very soothing). I would also suggest avoiding Applebee's and Arby's at all costs. Those two restaurants are not friendly to Celiac...
  4. Sorry, my attempt at a hot-link didn't work. Please copy and paste the address into your browser. I just tried it and it works
  5. AWESOME! Thanks for the info!
  6. Hello! I know this is an old thread, but I just saw this while browsing the Travel section for new Hawaii info. Don't know if you're still planning to travel to Maui - if so, here's some info for you... There are two great stores Mana Foods (Paia) and Down To Earth Natural Food (Makawao) - lots of gluten-free food. Ditto to the previous poster...
  7. I want to tell you about a wonderful bakery my dear friend Annette has just opened - Sweet Addictions. Her specialty is cake design (her cakes have been on Desperate Housewives, Gilmore Girls, and New Adventures of Old Christine...to name a few). However, since she has two friends w/ special dietary needs (I'm the celiac and Jen is the diabetic), she is...
  8. Hi - Z'tejas mexican restaurant is pretty tasty, they have a gluten-free menu too! www.ztejas.com If you get a chance, Prescott AZ is beautiful this time of year!
  9. You may be having a reaction to the buckwheat itself. The first time I tried a gluten-free buckwheat waffle I went into anaphylactic shock and had to go to the emergency room for an adrenaline shot (not fun). I now avoid all buckwheat products and have not had any issues since.
  10. How about meringue cookies or macaroons tinted w/ raspberry juice? Both are gluten-free and LF
  11. Wow! Sounds like you're definitley on the right track to getting started Depending on what state you're in, there are several options to explore for groceries. Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Wild Oats, Sprouts, and Henry's all have gluten-free shopping lists on their websites. Sometimes you can do well with smaller healthfood stores too. As for snacks...
  12. I agree w/ ehrin. I recommend going to "sleep." You're technically "awake", but they give you enough medication so it feels like you're sleeping. They will be going down your throat w/ instruments and it won't be pleasant if you are totally aware of everything. The twilight sleep is great! You're only out for a few minutes (the procedure is very fast...
  13. Sounds crazy, but I use tea bags in a tepid bath. The tannic acid is very soothing to irritated skin. I use plain old Lipton black tea or inexpensive green tea (I usually use 3 bags per bath). Just hold the bags under the water as it fills the tub, then throw them in when it's full!
  14. My general observation is that those who are overweight before being diagnosed seem to lose weight on the gluten-free diet. Those who are underweight before dx seem to gain. A dear friend of mine was just diagnosed a month ago. She was overweight before going gluten-free. She has been gradually melting away. I seem to be packing on what she has been...
  15. Amazing - the clueless doctors all read from the same handbook! I have been sick my whole life and the unknowing doctors always attributed my problems to stress. As a child, my parents were told that I was "an anxious child putting to much pressure on herself." As an adult, I was told that my job, commute, and relationships were putting a strain on my...
  16. DH can be spurred not only by gluten, but by stress. The rash flared up when I had surgery, pneumonia, broke up w/ a boyfriend, and got a new job (all on separate occassions of course ). The rash is untreatable w/ traditional methods. However, when I became gluten-free, it totally went away. It will flare up every once in a great while. Prior...
  17. Hello! I just posted info about a line called Desert Essence Organics. All of the products from the organic line are clearly posted gluten-free on the back of the bottle. If you can't find it in Canada, I'm sure you can order it online from Vitacost.com
  18. I stumbled upon this great hair/body line called Desert Essence Organics Open Original Shared Link They offer shampoo, conditioner, hand cream, and body lotion. All a clearly labled "Wheat and Gluten Free" on the back of each bottle. The ingredients are all natural and easy to identify (no mystery words). The scents are amazing. I'm partial to the Coconut...
  19. Hi! I would recommend Tinkyada gluten-free lasagna noodles. You can layer with marinara and spinach (fresh or frozen) and/or pancetta. If you forgo the pancetta, I would substitute bolognese for marinara sauce (that is, if you're not a vegan). You won't even miss the cheese!
  20. Getting glutened stinks!!! I know some people take charcoal pills (Glutenease?) to help speed it along, but I have never tried it. For me, it's one of those things that has to run its course. It usually takes me anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days depending on how much gluten I've consumed. I recommend drinking lots of water and simple foods...
  21. EngerG pretzels in snack size bags and Bumble Bars (chocolate or Apricot)
  22. Same for me! Every once in a while I'll get a new waiter who's unsure of the menu. However, they make the effort of asking lots of questions of the chef and restaurant manager. I've had good luck so far!
  23. I'm sure it's just your hormones talking, plus, a group of apethetic friends don't help. I agree w/ a prior poster who commented that now you can tell who your real friends are. Some people just don't seem to get it! Anywho, every time you get frustrated at your situation, just remember to keep things in perspective....you're so lucky to have good health...
  24. Hello! There's actually quite a few options. Here are some suggestions for gluten-free/CF: Fresh Fruits/Veggies/Meats/Eggs, Food for Life Breads, EnerG Breads/Buns, Shelton's Bologna/Turkey Sausage/Breakfast Links, Follow Your Heart Vegan Soy Cheese, Bob's Creamy Rice Cereal, EnerG Granola, Tinkyada or Deboles pasta, Mrs. Leeper's Rice Vegetable Twists...
  25. Hello! I agree w/ the other posters...the only thing that made me gain weight was avacados and peanut butter. My husband made me fresh guacamole and tortilla chips every day for two months....and I enjoyed every bit of it! It was several months before I could eat a larger variety of foods....I just didn't have an appetite. It took about a year for me...
