ARCHIVED How Fast Can A Reaction Occur After Consuming Gluten?
Cherry Tart replied to lilgreen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
In some instances, I've noticed my stomach burning within just a few minutes. However, 20-30 minutes is the norm for me. Recovery time can be anything from a few hours to a couple of days. Depends on the severity. -

ARCHIVED Can't Sleep And Itching....
Cherry Tart replied to bfarnsworth0709's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I get the same itching problem when I get glutened. I think the Benedryl suggestion is great - that's what I do. A cold shower to calm the hot irritated skin or a cool bath w/ black tea bags helps too (the tanic acid is very soothing). I would also suggest avoiding Applebee's and Arby's at all costs. Those two restaurants are not friendly to Celiac... -

AWESOME! Thanks for the info! -
Hello! I know this is an old thread, but I just saw this while browsing the Travel section for new Hawaii info. Don't know if you're still planning to travel to Maui - if so, here's some info for you... There are two great stores Mana Foods (Paia) and Down To Earth Natural Food (Makawao) - lots of gluten-free food. Ditto to the previous poster...

I want to tell you about a wonderful bakery my dear friend Annette has just opened - Sweet Addictions. Her specialty is cake design (her cakes have been on Desperate Housewives, Gilmore Girls, and New Adventures of Old Christine...to name a few). However, since she has two friends w/ special dietary needs (I'm the celiac and Jen is the diabetic), she is...

ARCHIVED Arrowhead Mills....any Cc Issues?
Cherry Tart replied to taweavmo3's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You may be having a reaction to the buckwheat itself. The first time I tried a gluten-free buckwheat waffle I went into anaphylactic shock and had to go to the emergency room for an adrenaline shot (not fun). I now avoid all buckwheat products and have not had any issues since. -

ARCHIVED Recently Diagnosed 9 Y/o Dd--emotional Issues And Lethargy
Cherry Tart replied to BreeVanDeCamp's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Wow! Sounds like you're definitley on the right track to getting started Depending on what state you're in, there are several options to explore for groceries. Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Wild Oats, Sprouts, and Henry's all have gluten-free shopping lists on their websites. Sometimes you can do well with smaller healthfood stores too. As for snacks... -
ARCHIVED Experience Of A Biopsy
Cherry Tart replied to person011's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree w/ ehrin. I recommend going to "sleep." You're technically "awake", but they give you enough medication so it feels like you're sleeping. They will be going down your throat w/ instruments and it won't be pleasant if you are totally aware of everything. The twilight sleep is great! You're only out for a few minutes (the procedure is very fast... -
ARCHIVED Need A Substitute For The Old Oatmeal Bath Remedy
Cherry Tart replied to zarfkitty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Sounds crazy, but I use tea bags in a tepid bath. The tannic acid is very soothing to irritated skin. I use plain old Lipton black tea or inexpensive green tea (I usually use 3 bags per bath). Just hold the bags under the water as it fills the tub, then throw them in when it's full! -
ARCHIVED Weight And Waist Loss Going Gluten Free
Cherry Tart replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My general observation is that those who are overweight before being diagnosed seem to lose weight on the gluten-free diet. Those who are underweight before dx seem to gain. A dear friend of mine was just diagnosed a month ago. She was overweight before going gluten-free. She has been gradually melting away. I seem to be packing on what she has been... -
ARCHIVED Best And Worst Drs Opinions/advice
Cherry Tart replied to Meemsy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Amazing - the clueless doctors all read from the same handbook! I have been sick my whole life and the unknowing doctors always attributed my problems to stress. As a child, my parents were told that I was "an anxious child putting to much pressure on herself." As an adult, I was told that my job, commute, and relationships were putting a strain on my... -
ARCHIVED Can Dh Go Into Remission Without A Gluten Free Diet?
Cherry Tart replied to Buttercup's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
DH can be spurred not only by gluten, but by stress. The rash flared up when I had surgery, pneumonia, broke up w/ a boyfriend, and got a new job (all on separate occassions of course ). The rash is untreatable w/ traditional methods. However, when I became gluten-free, it totally went away. It will flare up every once in a great while. Prior... -

ARCHIVED Trying To Make Lasagna Tonight And Can Not Find
Cherry Tart replied to isiskingdom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi! I would recommend Tinkyada gluten-free lasagna noodles. You can layer with marinara and spinach (fresh or frozen) and/or pancetta. If you forgo the pancetta, I would substitute bolognese for marinara sauce (that is, if you're not a vegan). You won't even miss the cheese! -
ARCHIVED First Glutening Episode!
Cherry Tart replied to Babygirl6915's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Getting glutened stinks!!! I know some people take charcoal pills (Glutenease?) to help speed it along, but I have never tried it. For me, it's one of those things that has to run its course. It usually takes me anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days depending on how much gluten I've consumed. I recommend drinking lots of water and simple foods... -

EngerG pretzels in snack size bags and Bumble Bars (chocolate or Apricot) -
Same for me! Every once in a while I'll get a new waiter who's unsure of the menu. However, they make the effort of asking lots of questions of the chef and restaurant manager. I've had good luck so far!

ARCHIVED Depressed- Need To Vent
Cherry Tart replied to angel42's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm sure it's just your hormones talking, plus, a group of apethetic friends don't help. I agree w/ a prior poster who commented that now you can tell who your real friends are. Some people just don't seem to get it! Anywho, every time you get frustrated at your situation, just remember to keep things in perspective....you're so lucky to have good health... -

ARCHIVED Ensure Or Something/anything
Cherry Tart replied to cdfiance's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hello! I agree w/ the other posters...the only thing that made me gain weight was avacados and peanut butter. My husband made me fresh guacamole and tortilla chips every day for two months....and I enjoyed every bit of it! It was several months before I could eat a larger variety of foods....I just didn't have an appetite. It took about a year for me...
