As I am a coffee connoisseur and frequent MANY coffee houses I distinguish the 2 by the menu. From my observations, a cafe usually has more options on the menu. In addition to the coffee drinks and baked goods, I expect to see sandwiches, salads, soups, maybe a breakfast menu. If you decide to expand into SW Wa (I'm guessing you're thinking of opening...

celiac-mommy replied to brigala's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications

ARCHIVED Is Fondant Gluten Free
celiac-mommy replied to jennyj's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It is totally beautiful, but TOALLY gross to eat. When I make mine, I focus on a really tasty filling, 2 thick layers of buttercream on the outside and let that set up before putting on the fondant. That way there's still a fabulous cake under the icky fondant -
ARCHIVED Is Fondant Gluten Free
celiac-mommy replied to jennyj's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
is she making her own? I'm pretty sure the Wilton fondant is gluten-free, but you can call to find out for sure. They're always really helpful with me. -
ARCHIVED Is Your Whole Household Gluten Free?
celiac-mommy replied to TJ060306's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Both of my kids have Celiac, my dh and I do not, but our house is 98% gluten-free. Dh doesn't eat bread or cereal anyway, but I have my own toaster for my bread and I have my cereal, otherwise, everything is gluten-free. As for the expense, for a family of 4, I spend about $125 every week and a half, with the exception of an extra gallon of milk and some... -
ARCHIVED Keeping Kids Gluten Free Who May Not Need To Be
celiac-mommy replied to Amyleigh0007's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Overall, a gluten-free diet is healthier-with some exceptions, I know-and it's your decision to do what you think is right for your child. Neither one of my kids has ever been made fun of because of Celiac disease. There may be questions once in a while regarding their participation in snack time, but never anything malicious (sp?). My ds tested negative... -
ARCHIVED First Trip In A Long Time
celiac-mommy replied to GlutenGalAZ's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
We take frequent road trips, I always bring a small cooler in case the room doesn't have a fridge, and then I can refill using the ice machine. I bring non-perishables that are a little more sustaining-LARA bars, nuts, peanut butter and jelly, crackers, pretzles, fruit, cereal, granola, organic chocolate milk (from Coscto-no refrigeration needed), pudding... -

ARCHIVED Supportive People In Your Life
celiac-mommy replied to Hummingbird4's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
We've been really lucky that everyone in our lives has been really supportive, even though most don't/can't understand. Everyone seems to go out of their way to make sure the kids have something good to eat, and actually plan their menus around them. What tears at my heart the most though, is when my dd's friends (age 7ish) have a birthday party, playdate... -
ARCHIVED Daycare And Gluten
celiac-mommy replied to caek-is-a-lie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I really like our daycare, we've been lucky because they've been very supportive, starting with our dd 3 years ago and now our son. I sit down with the teachers, they have a huge binder of info that I made for them, I have a plastic bin with all of his snack foods and I bring his lunch every day-he eats their fruit, veggies, applesauce, yogurt, cottage cheese... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Turn Down A Biopsy For Their Child?
celiac-mommy replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
AMEN!!! -
I'm estimating ~800 calories, if you only had 1 serving of the macadamia nuts. 800 is too low for sustaining life functions-your RMR is probably twice that!! If you want to work out most days, I would aim for ~ 1400-1500 calories a day!

ARCHIVED Vicks Products Including Nyquil And Dayquil
celiac-mommy replied to Nichelob's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I got the same generic letter from P&G, basically a CYA statement, but I did send a very unhappy/dissatisfied letter back regarding the statement about getting your Dr. to send a letter requesting the info--like Dr's have time to send inquiries to various companies for all of their patients. I got a note in return immediately sort-of answering my original... -

ARCHIVED Anyone Turn Down A Biopsy For Their Child?
celiac-mommy replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Our kids both had the biopsy. My dd was 4 at the time-glaringly positive visually, biopsy results agreed. Our son was 2 1/2 when he had the biopsy. blood tests were negative at 2, still having major intestinal issues, we decided to go ahead with the biopsy. Both instances were more painful for us, the parents, than for the kids. The only thing either... -
ARCHIVED Sorrento B.c.-anyone?
celiac-mommy replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I'm guessing that most of the shopping will be done in Kamloops. Anyone know of grocery stores there? -
We are renting out the Shuswap Lake Motel and Resort for a family reunion this summer (In Sorrento BC, near Kamloops)--I know I'm jumping the gun a bit, but we will start all the planning for who's doing what and bringing what in the next month. Does anyone know what I can and can't cross the border with and what is there, shopping-wise near there? We have...

ARCHIVED Excellent gluten-free Pancake Recipe?
celiac-mommy replied to midnightlullaby's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The GIG does a pancake breakfast/fundraiser every summer here and they have multiple varieties of mixes made up for pancakes. Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they are thru donation. I know if you contact Pamela's directly, they may be able to help. I know they donate a bunch of stuff for all of our ROCK meetings. They seem to be very supportive... -
ARCHIVED Our Dinner "trip" To Greece
celiac-mommy replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I had the sundried tomato/garlic (I think) tube of polenta, so I used that. The flours I used was the mix I made up and use for the flax bread-and all my other yeast bread recipes. Off hand, I don't know the concentrations, I know I posted it on here somewhere in the last 2 months, but can't remember where-I'll try to find it and let you know. I know it...
