ARCHIVED Seems Like A Dumb Question....but Because..........
melmak5 replied to burkev's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
SHORT ANSWER: I do not know. Longer explaination: Most fruit has some pesticides on it - organic or otherwise, fruits that you eat the peel should definitely be washed before consuming. Some fruits also have a thin (edible) wax sprayed on them to help them from rotting as quickly - this comes off with most soap and water. *** Some people have... -
BOWLING RULES (I had my last birthday party at a bowling alley. I called ahead and they let me bring in gluten free cupcakes!) Movies - I think its fun to "sneak in" my own snacks Making dinner together - I really like to cook, so I realize this is not everyone's thing and a bit harder for a first date Seeing a band/show - this is fun because there...

ARCHIVED I Am So Hungry Were You?
melmak5 replied to cat3883's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
About 2-3 months after going gluten-free this slowed down for me. (prior to, I had almost no appetite and had gained weight - I am 1.33 years into being gluten free and things hunger and weight-wise have stabilized and I have been able to exercise and try to keep things in balance) Good luck! PS - I also found that I was really really thirsty... I... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Oatmeal - Taste
melmak5 replied to jenkay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I ran into a similar problem - the burnt/wrong smell taste. I thought it was just me, but then I had a gluten-eating, oat-eating friend of mine taste some and he agreed that it was more than just my distant memory of oats. As to the rancid thing - whole grains have a much shorter storage life because they contain the germ, bran and the oils that are inside... -
ARCHIVED Ladies, What Facial Wash And Moisturizer Do You Use
melmak5 replied to cat3883's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I used a nock-off version of Cetaphil - the kind without fragrances & 2x a week I use Burts Bees Peach & Willow Bark Deep Pore Scrub. -
ARCHIVED Negative Blood Work...
melmak5 replied to LIS-Guy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
False negatives are possible in blood work. If you are going to have an endoscopy, it might make sense to wait and see what shows up from the biopsy of your small intestine. If it is inconclusive, then follow-up blood work might make sense. -

I can see your point, that sometimes it can appear that people are trying to one-up each other when they are explaining/listing symptoms. I cannot speak for anyone but myself here, but as a person who was told by the western medical community that almost all of my "symptoms" were either in my head or could not possibly be celiac disease... I have found this...

ARCHIVED Need Advice- Should I Mention Something To Teachers?
melmak5 replied to HAK1031's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I second, third... seventh the sentiment here. Tell your teacher. Personally, the more anxious/nervous I am, the worse the urgency feels or sometimes is. It is much better to be able to responsibly respond to your body and bowels. I would also urge you to tell any employers. You may or may not need a note, but telling people before there... -
ARCHIVED Who Has The Best gluten-free Pizza In Chicago?
melmak5 replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants

ARCHIVED Thanksgiving Update And Families
melmak5 replied to torontosue's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am really sorry. This suck, a lot. I went through something rather similarly last year (my first gluten-free Thanksgiving). I might have mentioned it in the other thread... but it ended with my mother saying I was "too difficult" which lead to a rather large fight, lots of crying between many different family members and me not attending Thanksgiving... -
Thanks to all for your support and humor. I realized today (after putting the pieces of the puzzle together) that I was glutened last week... which explains a lot. Digestively things have been weird, but I thought it was stress from sever IBS and finding out that 2 coworkers have been diagnosed with terminal illnesses atop of a major problem that I had...

I second the need for a gluten free world... perhaps someplace where it never rains, and is permanently 72 degrees. I would be fine with a gluten free island, I am not unwilling to compromise.

ARCHIVED First Thanksgiving Gluten-free
melmak5 replied to Hummingbird4's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Last year was my first gluten-free Thanksgiving. I was still not tollerating much, and my family said I was being "too difficult." After horrible fights I ended up staying at my house and inviting a few other people over who didn't have a place to go and we ended up having a FANTASTIC time. I cooked all of my things first. Gluten containing food was... -
ARCHIVED How To Tell An Itallian Guy "drop Half Your Culture"
melmak5 replied to raen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't mean to be blunt, but... I am Italian and I worked in the food industry and food is very important to me. It was very hard to "give up" all of my favorite foods and accept a new lifestyle. The bottom line is, it is really hard, but if and when he wants to get better, he can... and discover a lot of other amazing foods and parts of his culture... -
I live with two gluten eating adults (in their thirties). I have been gluten free for 1.33 years now (yes, I am like a child and count the fractions of a year). I have separate pots, pans, spoons, bakeware, etc... WHICH IS ALL LABELED. I store this in a SEPARATE, MARKED bin. I come home this morning to a few items I had left atop the bin, drying, that...

ARCHIVED Why Do I Feel Like This Today?
melmak5 replied to tkm831's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would check the "lite sour cream" A lot of lite or reduced fat dairy product add starches to bind them together and that could be your culprit. It also might be that your body is still trying to heal. One month gluten-free is amazing and congrats, but it takes a while for the body to heal. (The portion of your intestine that is damaged by gluten... -
ARCHIVED Tropicana 100% Juice
melmak5 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have a cold, I feel like utter crap. I was running late to work, popped in a convenience store to get some OJ and grabbed one that said 100% juice, ran out to catch the bus. Got to work, noticed the ingredient label reads: 100% pure orange juice from concentrate (filtered water and concentrated orange juice) and natural flavors*. *Ingredient not... -
ARCHIVED No Biopsy Ordered
melmak5 replied to LDJofDenver's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was in a similar boat. Endoscopy - no biopsies were taken (they thought I had a growth in my gut, when they didn't see anything, they didn't biopsy) later on... Blood came back positive & doctor said I had a choice to go through another endoscopy for a biopsy, but that he rand the numbers by a "celiac specialist" and since I was feeling better... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Throw Up With Celiac?
melmak5 replied to Bri's mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This is a great/interesting conversation. Regurgitating food was my first symptom, which confused many a doctor because they assumed it was something caught or growing in my upper GI and ignored my lower GI symptoms. When I get glutened I regurgitate food. About a tablespoon or less at a time for about 1-2 weeks. Its gross, but it was amazing when... -

ARCHIVED Does This Drive You Crazy?
melmak5 replied to newceliac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was too in the same boat. It took me over a year to figure it all out... but it is possible. For me it was cutting out gluten, dairy, soy, and drastically reducing portion sizes of everything and finding an IBS medication that works! I feel like for the first time in a LONG time I am living, rather than day-to-day coping with my body. It is possible... -
There was a New England Journal of Medicine article a few years ago that did substantiate what some people post (not that that is necessary, but sometimes it nice for "science" to catch on) that some persons with celiac disease do react to airborne gluten. (ex: wheat flour in a bakery) So like others said, it might be wise to stop handling gluten and...

Many recipes do call for bread crumbs to be added to gyro meat to stretch it out. You need to contact an individual company/restaurant/shop and ask how they prepare theirs. PS - Welcome!
