ARCHIVED Omg...i Might Be On To Something
melmak5 replied to Rachel--24's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
NoGluGirl Cross-reactivity does not affect everyone, so if you are allergic to dust mites you MIGHT react to shrimp, but not necessarily. Your body also may have a threshold... you might be able to eat 5 shrimp in a day but not 6, but again, some people have no issues with items other than those that they are allergic to. It is totally possible that... -

AndreaB - yes, that was my intention yesterday to make pureed food. But I fell asleep... for 12 hours. I am in the worst mood ever today. I want to rip out my intestines. I honestly think, barring a gunshot or projectile in my abdomen no one is going to actually care for me. I think I gotta take peanut butter back out of the rotation, as with pickles... -
ARCHIVED Gee, I Am So Shocked!
melmak5 replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was lucky enough, once, to see a nutritionist who has celiac disease and counseled patients with it. She was in fact, given lots of gluten free "samples" that she had in her office. It may not be widespread... yet. -

I am in Massachusetts, so yes, Lyme is now on my radar. No it wasn't the good test, but this one my insurance is covering, so I figure its a place to start. I react VERY strongly to MSG, so I am hoping that I neither have a reaction, nor have to keep this up for very long. I have tried two protein powders and the only success thus far, is burping,... -
Rice apparently is not my problem, things seem to be getting worse rather than better. I am on a quest to find the answer though. How is everyone else doing?

So I haven't posted in a bit, but I received some interesting information from the allergist I just started seeing, which might be helpful to others. I have been gluten free for over 4 months and I still have the following symptoms: Excessive Burping Burping with Regurgitation Heartburn (especially w/fruit and rice) Fullness Very loud abdominal... -

My brain fog stopped when I stopped eating rice (in addition to being gluten/dairy/alcohol/caffeine/soy/corn/egg-free) It came back when I tried a scrambled egg this weekend. It took me a full day sans-rice to feel a difference.

ARCHIVED I Want To Rip Out My Intestines
melmak5 replied to melmak5's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is a great article! My boss sent it to me and said "it made me think of you!" Which is sad and sick that she knows I am down to apple sauce, pickles and turkey, but damn if I don't have the urge to travel to London! -
ARCHIVED I Want To Rip Out My Intestines
melmak5 replied to melmak5's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thank you guys, I have some hope again that this thing is going to get tackled and figured out. (I was loosing my steam the past few days, but after getting a migraine last night and sleeping 13 hours, I am starting to feel a bit better.) I really appreciate your support and brains on this one. I cannot wait to nail down whatever this is and then kick... -

Carla and Sussie - Thank you so much. I guess I never ever thought about it. Sussie - what forms of testing you have done? (did you go through any false negatives?) Thanks, I will definitely bring this up with both doctors on Tuesday. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Deli In Harvard, Ma!
melmak5 replied to francelajoie's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Gemini - Oxford Spa (between Harvard and Porter Square) has gluten free rolls and cookies. They will make any of their sandwiches on either their plain or onion gluten-free rolls. (call them first, they often run out) They do contain dairy... but they are AMAZING -

Noglugirl - thanks, I most definitely am not eating rice again... at least not anytime soon. Sadly, things are not staying on the up-and-up: Open Original Shared Link I feel like my body cannot get a break. Hopefully the allergist (who does do food testing) and the new GI will have some idea(s) as to what the hell is going on. Applesauce and pickles... -
ARCHIVED Insensitive Spouse
melmak5 replied to p38lightningbolt's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am truly sorry you have to deal with this right now, but I agree you need to be in a safe space. His passive-aggressive and aggressive actions are posing risks to your physical health, not to mention that of your emotional and mental well being. You need to remove yourself from this situation. You cannot compromise your health, nor that of your child... -

Thatchickali - you are right, I am probably not. The problem is that with the exception of applesauce, pickles and sourcraut I have been regurgitating almost everything I eat. Dingogirl - I live in the city, so I don't think lyme is a possibility, but I haven't been tested for it and its definitely worth me asking about. jmd3 - i had to cut out the... -
ARCHIVED I Want To Rip Out My Intestines
melmak5 replied to melmak5's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thank you all. I guess I wasn't being overly dramatic yesterday, soon after I posted this I landed in the ER because I was unable to walk straight and got very dizzy. 6.5 hours later and they said I have "perfect" blood, electrolytes are fine, no infections all major organs fine. They have no idea what is wrong and surprise surprise pushed narcotics... -
Every time I think I have "figured out" what's wrong with my body, something else goes wrong. -acid reflux -celiac disease -bacterial overgrowth (2 rounds of antibiotics) -processed foods -pineapple, figs, bananas, fresh fruit in general = mouth allergic reaction -rice sensitivity (for lack of a better term) I have been sick since April and things...

Don't get me wrong, I cried and morned glutenous foods, and if you need to do it, do it. But its also a really interesting adventure if you can see it that way.

I have yet to find a "how and why does that work" gluten free baking/cooking book. If anyone else has, please do share. My *guess* on the vinegar is to act with baking powder/soda to create bubbles and lift. Without the protein structure gluten, which is really awesome at trapping air bubbles and creating lighter products... gluten free items need a...

ARCHIVED Calcium Substitutes?
melmak5 replied to Sprue that :)'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have had good luck with LifeTime calcium magnesium citrate. Its acidified so its suppose to be the easiest to digest. Its gluten, soy, dairy free. Its more expensive, and its a liquid that you have to refrigerate after opening, but I like it. -
I second the "get new stuff." I share a space with two house mates and I broke down and got my own kitchen items and it has been a lot easier to manage. I do share, plates, glass/ceramic cups, bowls, silverware. I have my own: cutting board, tupperware, pots/pans, wooden utensils, colander, toaster oven. If it cannot be scrubbed within an inch of...

I used to assist in a bakery, I promise it does get easier. You have to see it as a new adventure. Baking is so interesting chemically and structurally (not to mention taste) so give yourself a lot of freedom to try new things, make mistakes and see it as a challenge to make awesome gluten-free baked goods. Namaste spice cake mix saved me from a meltdown...

AndreaB I didn't know there was a difference. My appointment is the first with this allergist, but the receptionist said that he will do testing the day-of. I will ask about the different types, thank you! -

Tom, Thanks! I feel like my 4 month food intake/pain/elimination diary and my Jessica Fletcher skills are finally paying off! What I have been reacting to doesn't seem to be consistent, one week bananas are fine, this week they most definitely aren't. This might sound naive, but I feel like I have the opposite of a leaky gut, everything feels stuck...
