If you have product you currently use, perhaps your stylist would be open to you brining those in and s/he using them on your head. That way you know contamination is not an issue and you can have a killer 'do. -
I went to a nutritionist, who has celiac disease and DH, but it was 3 months after I was diagnosed. By then everything she told me I already knew. I would be weary of going to any dietitian/nutritionist who is not well versed in the disease and the nutritional deficiencies that often come with (at the beginning when your body is healing). But I am skeptical...

ARCHIVED My Favorite Foundation Contains Gluten!
melmak5 replied to i-miss-cookie-dough's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is a personal decision. There is a New England Journal of Medicine study that showed that some people with celiac disease are non-responsive to the gluten free diet because of inhaled gluten. You put foundation on your face, your inevitably breath some of it in. A lot, no, not by any means. Is there a chance you are going to smudge some on your... -
ARCHIVED Why Did I Lose Weight?
melmak5 replied to i-miss-cookie-dough's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If your intestines were/are damaged they cannot properly absorb nutrients, no matter how much you eat. Some bodies compensate by storing every calorie consumed (and people gain weight), other bodies are unable to absorb the necessary nutrients (and people loose weight). Some people have dramatic gains/losses after going gluten free, but once your body... -
ARCHIVED Making The Whole Family gluten-free?
melmak5 replied to moonlitemama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would lop off a toe if my roommates would be willing to make the household gluten free. I spend more time cleaning the counters and rearranging the gluten-ridden sponges on the sink and their desire not to use the dishwasher (just using the gluten sponges) make me mad. They are kind and respectful of my cupboard and designated utensils, but its really... -
ARCHIVED Lays Original-survey!

I appreciate it thanks. Maybe its time for 100% baby formula sans chips. Oh potatoes, why do you have to be so delicious? -
ARCHIVED Lays Original-survey!

Jerseyangel - Really?! Was it the plain kind? -
I am sorry you aren't feeling well. It can take a while for your body to adjust. Staying really well hydrated is very important, so is getting enough rest. You may want to consider illuminating other foods from your diet while your body heals (dairy, corn, soy tend to be big problems for a lot of people during the transition). Coffee is a big irritant...

San-J wheat free tamari is my favorite (well was, when I could eat soy) Its a little less salty than regular soy sauce.

There was a study that showed the only part of using hand sanitizer that does anything is the friction created when you move your hands back and forth. I wish I could find it, but the only thing hand sanitizer is really good for is drying out your skin. Wet-wipes are a good suggestion, at least they have the chance of taking something off your skin...

ARCHIVED Lays Original-survey!
melmak5 replied to Arpita's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I cannot resist potato chips, but Utz are my go-to bag. They are less greasy than Lays original and are labeled as gluten-free and I have not had a problem with them. (Its also nice that they were a pre-diagnosis food I could keep around, so it feels a bit more special... as cheesy as that sounds) -

Potato chips have been my caloric staple. They are the only thing I have been able to consistently eat. The prunes are the only fruit I can tolerate (only if stewed) and has been my only source of fiber, so I am worried about given them up, but I think at this point I have to. I am going to see how long I can do just formula, it makes me bloat, but... -

Thanks Jerseyangel. It kills me to be like this. I am not a sad person, I am not a woe-is-me person. I hate this more than I can say because I feel it is eating my life and personality away. I haven't had cashews in a few weeks, so maybe its them. I have the overwhelming urge to say f-it and just eat whatever I want because it doesn't seem to matter... -

Thanks, covsooze, I appreciate it. I was on 2 different acid reflux meds back in April - they did nothing but make the regurgitation taste less bad. I had an endoscopy in May, no biopsies done, because the tissue looked perfect. I had an esophageal motility test - normal. I live with two roommates. I have separate everything and they respect my space... -

Baby formula Potato chips Baked chicken Handful of cashews Stewed prunes I ate all of these things successfully the day before. I feel like I am going to loose my mind. I feel like there is nothing I "can" eat. Someone brought in banana bread here at work and I am full of rage. Its not there fault, but I hate them and it and bananas and everything... -
My very close friend had three surgeries to reconstruct her colon and they told her it would be near impossible for her to conceive, because of scar tissue. I thought I was being supportive by asking "how are things going?" when she started trying. She totally freaked out on me, yelled about how stress on her and her husband were decreasing the chances...

I give up. I ate no new foods last night. All old "ok" foods and at 1 in the morning was awoken with sharp intense chest pain (7/10). It burned so badly. A third of a bottle of pepto later, it started to quiet. I spent a good hour on the bathroom floor wishing I could puke it up. The last time I ate was at 8:30pm. What gives? -

There are at least three New England Journal of Medicine articles on Celiac Disease, one on the problem with non-responsive patients who are diet-compliant, but react to inhaled gluten. If you have access to a library that subscribes, you could print those out. If not, the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center's website might be helpful: Open Original... -

Rachel - I had a small, special, cheese-fridge for the project. The fridge in the kitchen is for eating, the one in my bedroom was just for my crazy science experiments. I really doubt it is the cause of all this (I have asthma and I think I would have had a strong lung-based reaction) but I am sure its not good to have another irritant where I sleep... -

I feel like a complete idiot for not thinking of it myself. I am going to freak out if it was this cheese the whole time making me sick. I haven't had dairy or cheese, but I would NEVER have thought that my cheese project could have done this. Is there a quick way to find out whats going on and/or heal? (delusions of grandeur I am sure) -

I am Kristina, sorry for the confusion. My first symptom was excessive burping, and since Alf was so proud of his burps with gusto, my name is a little joke/play on that. Has anyone here had a problem with mold? My roommate mentioned to me the other day.... what if its your cheese? As part of my MA thesis I recreated a cheese from 18th century Massachusetts... -

I tried a handful of organic, gluten free cornflakes (just corn flour and salt). BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER. A few hours later I was sweating, dizzy, angry, exhausted and my brain was no where to be found. (I was hoping to be able to have a grain to base meals around, but apparently I was over zealous) I also had to take out dried dates (mouth reaction and... -
ARCHIVED The Other Side Cafe-boston, Ma
melmak5 replied to sallyterpsichore's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Hot Off the Press Mass. Ave. Central Square Cambridge, MA (1/2 a block from the post office) They have gluten free bread and English muffins. My downstairs neighbors own the place and I nearly knocked the woman over with a hug when she told me they have gluten-free options. They also do dairy-free fruit smoothies, which rock.
