    ARCHIVED Starving

Since my naturopath is not covered by insurance we held off on testing for now. I had a rash, fuzzy mouth, and vaginitis and I've been struggling with poor absorption, so this is a logical conclusion. It is often associated with celiac; he even showed me research showing that yeast infections may be the original trigger for developing celiac disease.

    ARCHIVED Starving

I am so relieved to read this. I have been starving too--also losing weight again after already losing 15 pounds this year. I just was diagnosed with Candida and I am trying to follow the diet, but with everything else I can't eat it is hard. I've been very good except for fruit. I eat nuts, eggs, cooked vegetables with olive oil, vegetable juices, beans...
  3. I keep losing weight, especially since I stopped eating soy. I lost so many of the easy low prep foods when I figured out I didn't tolerate soy--yogurt, Tofutti cream cheese, soy cheese, lots of gluten-free crackers and cookies. If work isn't too busy and I have time to shop (celiac shopping is takes longer) and cook I'm fine. If I get busy, or if I have...
  4. If you don't mind boxed soups I like Imagine Organic Soups--some have dairy, some have soy, and a few are gfdfsf. Trader Joe's has some similar boxed soups.
  5. I want to encourage any efforts to improve gluten free food, so I did your survey with a fake address as well. My zip code is correct. As a gluten-free shopper my main concern is that manufacturers don't seem to realize that a lot of celiacs have other allergies. They would appeal to a wider audience if their products were also dairy free, for example...
  6. My acne cleared up when I went gluten free--if your son has skin problems that might encourage him. It cheered me up a lot! Another point--the longer he eats gluten, the more likely he will develop other food allergies. Good luck! I sulked for quite a while after being diagnosed, and I was an adult...
  7. I used to worry about eating too much fat before I was diagnosed with celiac, but now I don't worry much about it. My diet is so healthy and there is so much less starch that I can afford some fats if they are plant-based. I eat a lot of nuts. I carry some with me most of the time for when I am stranded with nothing gluten free to eat. Avocados are a great...
  8. Rachel and tarnalberry--I really appreciate this debate. Being diagnosed with fibromyalgia is kind of like being told to move to Shangri La or shake hands with Santa Claus. It's too amorphous--what do I do now? Click my heels together? It is comforting to know I am not the only person struggling with it. The only useful information I have gotten so far...
  9. I am so sorry! I was so upset when I found out that I went home and went to bed in the middle of the day. I am glad you don't have symptoms; that probably means you are catching it early before you develop problems like osteoporosis or additional food allergies. You may be surprised though. Some health issues that I didn't think were caused by gluten...
  10. You could try soy protein, but a lot of people who can't have wheat or dairy don't do well with soy either. I have a rice protein shake every morning in rice or almond milk. I add a bit of peanut butter and some fruit, usually a banana. It is easy to digest and high protein. Trader Joe's has the best prices in my area for non-dairy milks. Plain foods...
  11. I have been following this discussion with great interest since I was just diagnosed with fibromyalgia. My rheumatologist actually said, "You won't need to see me any more--there's nothing I can do for you. Get some pain meds from your regular doctor if you need them." Argh. Anyway, I totally agree about addressing the root cause(s) and mine seems to...
  12. I have been gluten free for 6 years. In the past year I started having achy hands and feet, especially first thing in the morning and when getting up from sitting. My muscles are so stiff that my pelvis is unstable and I have pulled several ribs out doing PT. I had a lot of tests this spring (for lupus, RA, and spondylitis, among other things) and my rheumatologist...
  13. I'm having the same problem--gfdfsf and not much time to cook. I ate rice bread toast and peanut butter for years, but lately I've been making shakes out of rice or almond milk with fruit (usually a banana), a dollop of peanut butter, and a sprinkling of protein powder--at first rice protein but now I am trying hemp, just to get more variety in my nutrition...
  14. When my gfdf mother was ill she was in two hospitals. One was so bad that I had to supply her with food for an entire weekend before the dietician could get things figured out--and then they were usually wrong. The other did fairly well feeding her, but had practically nothing to feed me when I was basically living at the hospital. I didn't have time to...
  15. I teach third and fourth grade. I do a nutrition unit and MY kids know how to read labels, by golly! We read our snack labels for a month and voted whether each one was nutritious, kind of nutritious, or junk. They know that the primary ingredients are listed first. They know that words ending in -ose are sugars. They know that whey and casein and lactose...
  16. Any shiny chocolates with food glaze at Trader Joe's have gluten (chocolate covered nuts and dried fruits). I got way sick from them once and called the company. It isn't on the label. I asked an employee to find out more about it but he never did. The chocolate covered orange and raspberry sticks have no glaze and are fine. Cadbury Easter eggs have...
  17. Here is something that will cheer you up. There are several very good gluten free brownie mixes. They are easy to make and probably the best gluten-free baked good. Even regular grocery stores carry them now--also Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. If you end up dairy free there are some great soy ice creams and adequate rice ice creams--also sorbet is very...
  18. I agree. I was on Prevacid for a couple of years for reflux that had actually damaged my vocal cords. I'm a teacher, so it was a big problem. I think it was a mistake, especially since it interferes with digestion of calcium and magnesium, and celiacs tend to get osteoporosis. I am now on digestive enzymes and betaine HCl and it works as well, or better...
  19. I love my ND. Unfortunately he is not covered by my insurance. He is very good about cooperating with my regular MDs. Sometimes he suggests I ask the MD for a certain test or scan so that it is covered by insurance. My primary care doctor is not quite happy about my ND, but I think he can see that a lot of my problems are nutritionally based, and the...
  20. Thank you! I'm printing these replies out and taking them with me to England. And I thought American labels were complicated...
  21. Hi--I am going to England this summer (I hope) and I was wondering about the fine points you have to know to stay gluten free when reading food labels there. The Coeliac UK website says that modified starch and maltodextrin are gluten free in England. In the United States one does not know if they are safe unless the derivation is shown e.g. maltodextrin...
  22. I have had joint and muscle problems for about six years. My original lower back problems never cleared up and I keep adding new body parts--frozen shoulder, slipped ribs, thoracic spine, aching hands and feet. I know that being glutened causes joint pain in many celiacs but these problems remain constant. I am as vigilant as anyone can be about my diet...
  23. Thank you Finn and pele! I took notes on your recommendations, and I am going to buy that book.
  24. I have two thoughts. Are you sure you aren't still getting glutened from something? It is absolutely infuriating how pervasive it is, and it is hard to keep track of everything when you have just started on the diet. The last time I got sick was from food glaze on some chocolates. I mean, really! Perhaps one of your new regular foods that you are eating...
  25. People on this forum are so helpful! OK, here are my supplements: vitamins A, B, C, D3 (5,000 IU a day), and K. Calcium apatite (has phosphorus) and magnesium. Fish oils twice a day. None of my doctors have mentioned pancreatic insufficiency before, but in December my naturopath gave me digestive enzymes when I was unable to digest all the calcium. One...
