  1. Thank you. I was checked this summer--normal, thank goodness, though I really would like a logical explanation for my fibromyalgia. So many people on this forum have their joint/muscle pain clear up once they go off gluten, but mine, like yours, seems to be unaffected by gluten. I hope the Hashimoto's diagnosis means they can do something helpful for you...
  2. I've had SI joint pain for 6 years. It started with a herniated disk that wouldn't heal. The disk and the celiac were diagnosed the same week. In my case I think all those years of malabsorption--I have other allergies, and it took a while to figure them out--slowed down my healing. This year my back is hugely better because of a series of prolotherapy and...
  3. I have celiac and (recently diagnosed) fibromyalgia. I am taking magnesium and B12 to help with the joint pain and muscle cramps. I also hope it will help with heart palpitations. But I've taken them for several months now and not seeing much of an effect. How much do you take, what kind, and in what form--sublingual, IV, pill, shots? I realize it would...
  4. Don't eat the Hershey little bar assortments. They will not guarantee that they are gluten free. Regular size Hershey bars are fine. All this is assuming you can have dairy? If you are newly diagnosed sometimes you find that dairy is a problem as well for a while. If that should happen don't despair--there are great dairy-free dark chocolates you could...

I just noticed that when I came to the website as an unknown visitor it did say I had logged on that day. When I entered my password and officially logged on it then got it right.
  6. I've used guacamole to glue things on my pizza--it was pretty good! And I sort of made cheese recently from raw cashew paste. I bought it in a jar--didn't make it myself. I added some lemon juice and salt to it and it made a fair ricotta layer--nice and oily and salty, just like cheese. Maybe it would help pizza as well?
  7. Trader Joe's has the best prices on dairy free drinks if you need those--soy, rice, and almond milk. They also have almond butter, cashew butter, and good prices on roasted/salted nuts--I eat a lot of those for snacks. Whole Foods has Lundberg Rice Chips that are wonderful.
  8. But you can eat pasta, right?
  9. Perhaps she would like Snapeas? They are made from peas and rice oil and salt (I don't have a bag to double check exact ingredients right now)--kind of healthy Cheetos. I get them at Albertsons and Trader Joe's. My nine year old students like them. I hope my school doesn't ban peanuts or I will starve...
  10. I had trouble with anxiety/depression after going off gluten. Taking vitamin D3 really helped. It is a common deficiency, particularly in celiacs after years of malabsorption, and vitamin D helps with depression. This website has some good info www.vitamindcouncil.org that you could look at. It is amazing how many things improved after I went off gluten...
  11. It takes a while for celiac intestinal damage to heal. You probably are also still dealing with some nutritional issues--you, uh, lost food for a long time, and it is difficult to find a balanced diet for a while. (You also might consider whether dairy is a problem--people who are gluten intolerant often can't tolerate dairy or soy--yeah, happy advice...
  12. You catch on a lot faster than I do! I've had this for 6 years and I just now came to the conclusion I should never mention it to my brother and sister. I've always tried not to mention it much (my brother tends to suddenly have to hang up if I mention health on the phone), but I think I need to lead an entire secret life they don't know about it. My brother...
  13. Chrissyb--Trader Joe's has gluten free frozen pancakes--really good. (Unfortunately they have soy flour, but maybe that is OK for you?) I realize there are also mixes but sometimes one just wants instant immediate pancakes. My current vice is dark chocolate--no dairy, no soy, and as low in sugar as possible. I also love Lundberg rice chips with guacamole...
  14. Gemini is basically right--just go on the diet and you're OK--if it was caught early enough. But I really want to see more research. I think it would help a lot of related autoimmune diseases. I also want accurate numbers on how common this disease is, and I want doctors to do routine blood testing for celiac on children they way I've heard they do in...
  15. There is no way I would trust a school kitchen to provide a gluten free, or anything else free lunch. They are horribly underfunded and understaffed. In the district I teach in they no longer even cook in the kitchen; they just reheat large batches of unnutritious gluten-loaded chicken nuggets and pizza and corn dogs from a food service. There are fresh...
  16. Amen! Improved public awareness would really be great, so that people in restaurants and grocery stores could be more helpful. Educating doctors so that people are diagnosed before they develop umpteen other problems would be wonderful. And research for a cure, or at least for the cause, might help a lot of other autoimmune diseases as well as celiac....
  17. I agree--the gluten free brownie mixes really make celiac life worth living. I think it would be really hard to deal with this as a teenager. The hardest time for me to stay on the diet is when out with friends, and my friends take my diet very seriously. But watching them eat pizza or desserts...well, sometimes I want to throw a tantrum and I am 52...
  18. I noticed you are from Oregon? You probably have access to Whole Foods, New Seasons, or Trader Joe's. Trader Joe's has my favorite rice bread, especially good for toast. If you are also off dairy they have the best non-dairy prices and lots of choices. They have gluten free frozen waffles and pancakes too. Whole Foods and New Seasons are wonderful but...
  19. I am not sure but I think some food glaze has gluten. I had a very definite reaction to some Trader Joe's chocolates and the only ingredient it could have been was the food glaze. I don't react to the non-shiny chocolates. I called their 1-800 number and they said the chocolates did have gluten. There was no other place for it to come from.
  20. I don't know about Hashimoto or hepatitis symptoms--hopefully someone else will chime in with some info on that--but all of your symptoms are also classic celiac symptoms. I always had fairly immediate bloating with delayed diarrhea and chronic mouth ulcers. Many people on this forum talk about brain fog and exhaustion as symptoms. Some people show very...

I know there is genetic testing that can help confirm what kind of celiac/gluten intolerance you have if you are ever curious. I have no idea how to get it or if it is covered by insurance. My diagnosis was so classic I didn't need it. I'm seeing a new gastro--Dr. Alan Kaynard--at West Hills Gastro in September. He says he knows about celiac, but we...
  22. I am still really struggling with this issue! My first big hint is to hand them a list or card or something in writing. The long list scares them and it is usually noisy in restaurants. ("I can't eat wheat." "Oh, we have lots of vegetarian choices!") My other big hint is to use the term bare naked--I want just bare naked chicken. They are usually appalled...
  23. Hi, and welcome! You can find lots of good information on this forum. I don't have any particular cookbooks to recommend. I keep developing new allergies and intolerances so I stopped investing in cookbooks. What I do is look on the internet. There are lots of recipe sites--gluten free, vegan, raw food, you name it. I just google what I want to make...

ARCHIVED Need Dr In Portland Or Area

Hi--Did you have the blood tests or the endoscopy? How long were you gluten free before the test? Quitting gluten before the blood tests affects the results. There is a big gastroenterology clinic in the Tualatin area. They have a branch in Oregon City. (Gastroenterology Specialists of Oregon 503 692 3750---they have a big website) My doctor there...
  25. Hooray! There is a new yogurt (So Delicious made by Turtle Mountain in Eugene, Oregon) made from coconut milk that is gluten, dairy, and soy free. I double checked with the company (turtlemountain.com). There are several flavors including plain. There is also Purely Decadent coconut milk ice cream that is also GFDFSF. It has agave nectar sweetening for...
