  1. Some researchers are starting to think there are stages of celiac. You could be an early stage with antibodies but minimal intestinal damage. The positive antibodies sounds pretty definite, especially given your digestive problems. You might have trouble finding enough starchy foods at first but you'll catch on fast. There are lots of breads, cookies...
  2. I don't have those symptoms, but I have had acne for 40 years and I get big chin ulcers and have scarring. I also break out when exposed to the sun. I've noticed that my skin has improved over the six years since I was diagnosed, and especially since I finally tracked down my other food intolerance problems. Your liver processes toxins, and if you are celiac...
  3. At our school the kitchen staff has been cut back and they are quite rushed and overworked. The food is dreadful--overprocessed and unnutritious stuff from a food service, not cooked on site--chicken nuggets, pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, and burritos are the most frequent choices. It isn't good for any of the children. Your child deserves the district...
  4. I just visited a good dietician in the Portland area who specializes in gastro issues like celiac. Her name is Nicole Strealy. She is with Providence and works on Saturdays once a month (she has little kids) in Lake Oswego near the Kruse Way exit. She was very good--even knew about the obscure stuff like envelope glue and drywall--and would be especially...
  5. PF Chang has a gluten free menu--very nice.

ARCHIVED Need Dr In Portland Or Area

Hi again--I wanted to add an update. I saw Dr. Kaynard a few weeks ago and he was super, very impressive. He was knowledgeable and listened well. (He even took my very strong opinions on the connection of fibromyalgia and celiac seriously.) I didn't feel rushed, I didn't have to educate him, and I didn't feel as if he thought I was crazy. What a relief...
  7. I am a teacher with celiac disease, and I would still have trouble remembering to tell you ahead of time, especially if the event was in choir and not in my classroom. It is scary the number of tiny little details I have to remember about my kids each day--who has allergies, who never gets breakfast, who gets meds at noon, who was absent yesterday, who will...
  8. But...I'm confused...don't you have celiac disease? How long have you been diagnosed? Don't you get sick if you eat wheat or barley? If I ate any gluten I'd have diarrhea so badly that my vacation would be ruined for a day or two. That is plenty of motivation for me. If you don't get that obviously sick from gluten perhaps you can motivate yourself by...
  9. Unfortunately if you have celiac disease you always have celiac disease. You can regain good health but you will always have to monitor your food very carefully. You said you are taking measures to cure leaky gut. I hope you are taking a probiotic. (Make sure it doesn't have dairy in it.) The friendly bacteria that are supposed to be in your gut...
  10. Hi--Have you had any blood tests recently to see what you are short on nutritionally? After years of malfunctioning intestines you are probably missing some key ingredients, and improving them would help you recover faster. Celiacs tend to especially be short of calcium, magnesium, B complex (especially B12 but they are better taken together) and D3. D...
  11. In restaurants I usually order some sort of meat without the sauce or pasta or whatever. Restaurants are noisy and waiters are often young and in a hurry. The best way to really make it clear to them is to ask for BARE NAKED chicken, or BARE NAKED pork. Usually they are embarrassed or they giggle but they do get the idea. Tell them to cook it in a separate...
  12. Hey! What candy list? This is crucial information. I'm mostly off sugar but if I fall off the wagon I want to fall gluten free.
  13. Codeine makes me hyper--I had surgery once and was up all night wanting to go for a run--the doctor said a small percentage have that reaction. And goodness knows celiacs are already in the small percentage of weird reactions category. I've read some research about drug reactions being genetically linked--redheads having different reactions to painkillers...
  14. Wow. I am grateful for all this information but I am EXTREMELY angry. I spend my life reading labels, shopping for obscure products, skipping food at parties, starving when I travel, cooking from scratch, reading websites and I AM STILL GETTING DAMAGED BY GLUTEN?!!! On a more positive note, thank goodness for the people on this forum.
  15. Do you suppose that it is like the drugs used to treat hyperactivity and attention deficit? Drugs like Ritalin will make most people MORE hyperactive, but they make some hyperactive people calmer. I've had hyperactive students who said they get calmer with caffeine also, though I don't know for sure if that is true. (I teach nine year olds.)
  16. My house is OK (except the walls, evidently!)--I'm single, so that simplifies CC. Do latex gloves have gluten? I wear gloves to prevent allergic reactions to soaps and cleaners, etc. Latex itself isn't a problem.
  17. Thank you! I'm going there next week! I'll tell them they got an advertisement here; I think it encourages restaurants to train their waiters.
  18. There's almond milk, which I find tastier than rice milk. The two brands I have access to have soy lecithin, but I don't tolerate soy and the lecithin doesn't seem to be a problem for me. I like the almond milk better nutritionally as well. There's also hemp milk.
  19. Oh my gosh. I just had my bathroom remodeled. It was finished two weeks ago. Drywall can have gluten? Really? Maybe it isn't my food. Thanks.
  20. I don't get it. I just had more blood tests to try to figure out ongoing joint and muscle problems. My new gastro did a routine IgA/tTG test. I ended up slightly positive (24--over 19 is possible celiac). I am so meticulous about checking everything, and most of my food is meat, nuts, vegetables, and fruit that I prepare or have nothing added. I haven...
  21. Do they have gluten-free pizza with dairy free cheese too? They sound wonderful. Thanks for the info. Have you found A Piece of Cake bakery on 17th, just south of Tacoma? They have gluten free stuff--expensive, but nice for an occasional treat if you are in the neighborhood. And the Corbett Fish House has gluten free food.
  22. I've lost weight since I was diagnosed, and every time I dropped another food group--especially soy and sugar-- I lost more weight. I was a little pudgy but I don't need to lose any more weight now. I lose more weight when I travel or work too much and can't eat at home. I lost six pounds on a two week vacation this summer--not good. I should bake and...
  23. Taking some form of acidophilus (make sure it doesn't have any dairy in it) would help. It helps constipation or diarrhea and helps heal your intestines by giving you healthy intestinal flora. After having diarrhea for so long you've probably lost most of your "happy germs" as my mother always called them. Good luck.
  24. I'm sorry you're not feeling well. Your intestines were damaged by the celiac and, even after six months, they are still healing. Since the enzyme for digesting milk is produced in the lining of your intestine celiacs often can't have dairy. After a year or so some people can have dairy again and some, like me, never can. Fruit is kind of hard to digest...
  25. Open Original Shared Link I just ran into this article and thought some people on the forum might be interested, since many celiacs have CFS/FM type problems. At least it's a fun idea--chocolate as a medical treatment--that's the only reason I eat it, of course!
