ARCHIVED Malabsorption - Thoughts? Experiences?
frec replied to munchkinette's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am having malabsorption problems as well. My D level is still low even though I've been on 5000 IU for a year now. (Make sure it is D3, and that you take it with some kind of fat for better absorption. I use peanut butter.) Some celiacs have bacterial overgrowth in their small intestines and that can cause continued digestive and absorption problems even... -
Oh dear. I'm not finding any of the articles I've read over the years, but they are out there. Celiacs have poor absorption and the lack of nutrients interferes with proper synthesis of neurotransmitters, which affects mood. Intestinal damage lowers levels of vitamins B and D which are important to mood and healthy brain function. My naturopath told me...

I was diagnosed with celiac six years ago and with fibromyalgia 3 months ago. I am sure I had celiac for years but the fibromyalgia really only started in the last few years. It worsened abruptly when I started menopause last year. I think fibromyalgia is a catch all term for "you hurt but we don't know why". It's like diagnosing someone with asthma...

The doctor doesn't have to know everything and it isn't possible. My primary care doctor at least knows what celiac is, but I know more than he does. What is important is that he LISTENS. He believes my symptoms. He even (reluctantly) coordinates with my naturopath. Unfortunately his level of celiac expertise is, "If you are on the diet and you have...

ARCHIVED I Am New And Take All Advice And Hints!
frec replied to rmducote's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The four hidden gluten ingredients I run into the most are modified food starch, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, malt and maltodextrin. They can be in anything. I found maltodextrin in iced tea (powdered) someone offered me this week. Who'd have thought? You can have maltodextrin and modified food starch IF they specify that it is from corn or tapioca or... -
Are cute stories allowed here? It is coping with celiac, so I didn't go to the chat room... Anyway, I'm Methodist. The last piece of gluten I ever deliberately ate was my communion bread. I came home, opened some mail, and read my test results. That was it. Since I am rather shy and celiac life is tiresomely full of telling total strangers about your...

ARCHIVED Am I The Only One Who Can See The Link?
frec replied to AliB's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
The increase in some of today's new (?) health problems may be from improved diagnosis, etc. I know that the incidence of autism has really increased, however, and so has ADHD. I have taught elementary school for thirty years. Every classroom at my school now has one and sometimes two or three autistic students--usually boys. (Our special services people... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Throw Up With Celiac?
frec replied to Bri's mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I threw up and had diarrhea the last time I was glutened, but I only get glutened about twice a year. I, too, am concerned that your daughter is throwing up so often. I had trouble with constipation when I was first diagnosed because I ate so much rice and stopped all the wheat cereals I'd been eating; I still have to be careful to eat enough fiber--usually... -
I'm taking garlic and probiotics. Giving up gluten was much easier than this. Thanks again for listening.

Thank you! I guess what I'm asking is, how rigorously do people follow this diet? This is a REALLY limited diet. I've managed to absolutely give up gluten, dairy, soy, and a bunch of other minor stuff. I don't cheat--I am God's gift to diet following. Everyone on this website is on some sort of limited diet. But the only absolutely legal foods on this...

ARCHIVED Vomiting Undigested Food/meds After 7 Hours!
frec replied to pilatesgirl24's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My main symptoms before being diagnosed with celiac were GERD and diarrhea. I felt as if it took food forever to leave my stomach. GERD sometimes is a lack of acid in your stomach rather than excess acid. I think that was true for me. I was on Prevacid for several years and it did not help anything--taking digestive enzymes and betaine hydrochloride (digestive... -
I've been on the Candida diet for about two months. I think this is going to be a permanent change in lifestyle. (sigh) I think my joint pain is better on this diet. I have been doing a lot of research on the Internet and the rules for the diet are all over the place. I am confused, so I am taking a poll from the people who know the most--the people on...

ARCHIVED What Symptoms Do You Get If You Eat Gluton?
frec replied to wolfee's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I always get gas and diarrhea when I am glutened--usually it takes about 3 days to get over the worst of it. I have been gluten free for six years and my reactions are more severe than they were when I ate gluten all the time. -
I am still not sure after reading your post whether you had a biopsy done on your small intestine with the upper GI? That is the best method of diagnosis. Did you have the celiac blood tests? Those can sometimes be negative even when you don't tolerate gluten--the biopsy is the best way. I had IBS and GERD and hemorrhoids prior to being diagnosed with...

ARCHIVED You Know You're A Celiac If.......
frec replied to irish daveyboy's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Thank you--these are very funny! (I didn't know other people had wheat-eating nightmares too! I spit it all out and wake up yelling.) I'd add You know you are a celiac if you make your own cheese (from cashews). You know you are a celiac if you sometimes shout swear words while grocery shopping. You know you are a celiac if you've actually called... -
I have never cheated in the six years since I've been diagnosed. All I have to do is picture my reaction and I am not tempted (except pizza still drives me wild). I went on a diet for Candida two months ago in hopes it would help my fibromyalgia, and that has been a different experience. I am not entirely sure I have Candida, and I'm not sure the diet...

ARCHIVED What To Do After Accidentally Eating Gluten?
frec replied to GabrielleM's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I take Immodium if things go on for too long--otherwise I figure it's best to get rid of everything. I drink a lot of water to help sort of rinse out the toxins and to replace the fluids I, uh, lose. I eat very conservative safe foods for a few days like bananas and rice, Then I take extra acidophilus for about a week to get my intestinal flora back in order... -
You're right about the waiters in London not speaking English. I spent most of my vacation in Devon and Cornwall. Most of the waiters were young Europeans working their way through school and they didn't speak much English either. One young man was very helpful because his brother has celiac disease. It's not just England--I have trouble in Oregon too...

I've been on vacation for two weeks, and I had to eat out a lot. I was in England, so things were more precarious than usual as far as ingredients. I am still trying, even after six years, to find the best way to communicate with waiters. (This is assuming I don't go for the bare naked chicken breast order or the plain salad order, but that gets really...

I haven't been glutened in quite a while, and I've read on this forum that gluten reactions can be worse after not eating it for a long time. I was in England on vacation for two weeks and I'm pretty sure, despite obsessive label reading, that I got glutened (probably an accumulation of that under 200 ppm bit that doesn't count in England). But I was so...

I have a Candida infection. I am taking Candaclear (garlic) and probiotics. My naturopath said NO SUGAR and dashed off. I have read lots about the diet on the web but it varies, and besides, I've kind of lost my positive attitude over this. I am already gfsfdf. I also don't eat potatoes, corn, sesame, citrus, coffee. I gave up carbonation and caffeine...

ARCHIVED Cadburys....gluten Free?
frec replied to wilem008's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Oh! It wasn't just me then! I'd had a very bad week, and I was about to buy a Cadbury Egg as a treat and I saw it had gluten. I got all weepy in the middle of the store--it was just the last straw--but I felt so silly. I mean, I'm supposedly a grownup, for goodness sake. -
I used to have trouble with the inside of my mouth shedding. My dental hygienist told me some people have that problem from toothpastes with whitener. As long as I don't use those I'm fine--haven't had it happen since.

Every time I nail down another food intolerance my skin improves, most recently when I gave up soy. Now I am working to eliminate yeast and hoping for another improvement. At this rate I'll be a gorgeous model when I'm 80.
