  1. I've had a funny bumpy not-itchy rash on my face and neck for half a year now. I assumed it was food-based, perhaps caused by Candida, but perhaps it is not. It doesn't look or act like what I've read about DH. I have red hair and fair skin and break out at the least provocation but this is a new record. The dermatologist just shrugged. I've always used...
  2. Jason--I am SO glad I don't travel for a living. When I do travel I always lose weight because of exactly the same problems you have. Bare chicken breast and steamed vegetables--I just get so tired of them! What I find I need for my morale and sanity is a treat either before or after. Go out with your friends, eat the chicken and vegetables to stay healthy...

ARCHIVED Need Dr In Portland Or Area

It didn't take too long to get in. The colonoscopy/endoscopy wasn't bad at all--except for the prep, of course. He discussed the results with me right away and gave me a copy. His assistant called with the lab reports about a week later and helped me with some follow up stuff. As I said before, I was impressed. He didn't even flinch too badly when I swore...
  4. I don't get depressed when I am glutened, but I had trouble with chronic depression for several years. Taking vitamin D3 has really helped. It is good for your immune system and for depression, and, thanks to malabsorption, a lot of gluten-intolerant/celiac types are low on vitamin D. I also am slowly learning to see what luciddream mentioned. I hope you...
  5. Open Original Shared Link I am sure this isn't a surprise to anyone.
  6. I just wrote Neutrogena about three of their products. I got this puzzling response. Do you think that means the first two products have oats/rye/barley? It doesn't say so in the ingredients. Do non-edible products have to follow the stricter new labeling laws where the top ten allergens have to be specifically listed? In reference to your inquiry...
  7. I am also gfsfdf. I agree with Janet that replacing dairy, especially CHEESE, is more difficult than replacing gluten. There are good ways to get calcium without dairy, however--salmon, peanuts, walnuts, sunflower seeds, kale, broccoli, chard, collard greens, dried beans, and fortified orange juice. You can also take supplements. You could try giving up...
  8. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Don't forget the chocolate!
  9. I am so sorry! I hope you feel better soon. I agree that you should quit dairy for a while. Try a challenge sometime when you are more rested and healthy. If you have celiac disease the intestinal damage may have destroyed your ability to digest dairy. The enzymes are made in the lining of your small intestine. Some people never get the enzymes back...
  10. Mtndog--I love that quote. Thank you. And Judy--Are you taking vitamin D3? I take 5000 IU a day. It has really helped my depression and my tendency to catch every germ all winter. You could, uh, do some research about it... Sometimes I just go out with friends and drink tea while they eat. I get to see them and skip all the food hassle. I eat before...
  11. I can't have potatoes either. I eat sweet potatoes or yams. Neither are botanically related to real potatoes. I mash them, bake them, and put them in soups--great. I think the whitish ones are a bit more potatoey than the orange yams. Both are more nutritious than regular potatoes, which is nice. Some people really like quinoa as well.
  12. I usually get diarrhea the next morning. There are some early warning signals--mostly gas. As SFWhiskers says, everyone reacts differently. Many people say that their reaction to gluten has become more severe now that they are off it. You also might be eating a lot of some new product as a gluten alternative that does not agree with you. I started eating...
  13. Hi Michelle--Shay is right. Natural food, cooked from scratch, is your best bet. It's what we all should be eating anyway. Any kind of takeout or processed, prepared, packaged food is usually full of gluten. BUT let's face it. We're all busy, and some of us (like me) are not great cooks--I'm learning--and we crave the foods we grew up with, especially...
  14. I can't have corn, milk, or gluten either. I eat Snapeas--I get them at Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, or Albertsons. He could eat Rice Chex too. My niece loved hummus when she was little--good protein. Can he have nut butters on rice crackers? Soy cheese? There is a really good Tofutti soy cream cheese--you can spread it on sliced meats (read the labels...
  15. Are you getting a fairly balanced diet? It is hard to do when you start a gluten free diet--so much shopping and so many labels to read, and you already feel bad to start. Did any of the blood tests check nutrient levels--calcium, magnesium, iron, vitamin D3? All that intestinal damage interferes with your absorption and, unfortunately, will continue to...
  16. I have always gotten a flu shot every year, and it always makes me feel sick for a few days. I also have ongoing intestinal complications (leaky gut?)--suspected Candida and an ever-increasing list of food intolerances. Don't the flu shots contain mercury? Is it a bad idea to expose myself to the mercury? What do you all do? Are there any flu shots without...
  17. I can't have corn, potatoes, soy or dairy as well. Dairy really gets me--I can sometimes have bits of the others and not get very sick. I've pretty much given up sugar except for my sacred daily chocolate. Here is a typical day. breakfast: rice protein smoothie with banana, nut butter, almond milk herbal tea I have rice...
  18. Hi beachbel--I've been gluten free for six years. I had never been retested before but, given my current health problems, my new gastro thought it was a good idea. My tTG, IgA was 23--positive for celiac antibodies. My endoscopy showed flattened villi. I was quite surprised. I haven't had digestive problems lately. I have muscle and joint problems....
  19. I was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2002. I have never cheated on the diet and only get glutened occasionally--maybe once or twice a year. My new gastro gave me an IgA/tTg test, just to check things, and I came out slightly positive (23). He did an endoscopy last week to check on things and found villous atrophy--not totally flattened, but damaged....
  20. Open Original Shared Link Prolotherapy is little-known treatment for joint problems due to osteoarthritis or injured ligaments or tendons. The doctor uses injections to encourage an immune response from your body to rebuild the cartilage and strengthen the ligaments/tendons. It usually takes more than one treatment. The bad part is sometimes it is not...
  21. I've been on the diet for six years and I have chronic problems with reflux damaging my vocal cords. Are you taking any antacid or proton pump inhibitors--Prilosec, Prevacid, Protonix, anything like that? I won't take them anymore though I did for years. They help with reducing stomach acid but the lack of acid keeps you from digesting as well, especially...
  22. Your digestive issues could certainly be celiac. I never had DH so I can't help you there. Some celiacs develop neuropathy due to nutritional deficiencies. Have you had the blood tests for celiac disease yet? That is an easy way to start; sometimes you need an upper endoscopy as well to make sure. You could also find out by going gluten free and seeing...
  23. Hi--I was diagnosed at 46. You can heal too, and it will be faster if you have the right nutrients to work with. Make sure your doctor does some blood tests to check on any nutrients you might be short on. Have the doctor check your vitamin D levels. They are low in a lot of people and especially in celiacs. Vitamin D helps your immune system and also...
  24. Questions: 1. sex:F 2. age:52 3. ethnic group: Caucasian 4. age at which you were diagnosed:46 5. How did you feel when you were diagnosed? chronic GERD--lost my voice-- and diarrhea most mornings--planned my life to be near bathrooms 6. Did you have health problems in childhood? allergies, asthma, bronchitis 7. How well do you maintain a gluten-free...
  25. I'm from an alcoholic family too. I just can't have a fun vacation when I'm incontinent. There isn't anything particularly heroic about it. (I like to snorkel. Picture diarrhea in a wetsuit, rocketing out of the water and sprinting up the beach while trying to take the wetsuit off....it wasn't pretty.) The possible complications are a helpful added incentive...
