ARCHIVED Cross Contamination in new living situation
Nadtorious posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi gang. I'm sure everyone can relate to that wit's end moment with dealing with Celiac and I feel like I'm finally hitting mine. I was diagnosed 15 years ago and through that time have had lots of ups and downs teaching family, friends, partners, loved ones and restaurant staff how to safely make a meal for me (or anyone else with celiac for that matter...- 6 replies

ARCHIVED Most Ridiculous Gluten Comment I've Heard
Nadtorious replied to C-Girl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Haha, so I'm a dietitian, and I work with other dietitians. Once had a dietitian (an old boss, who has a MASTERS DEGREE in nutrition mind you) give me a bag of chocolate covered pretzels as a gift. "I'm not sure if they're gluten free or not...." They most certainly were not. Let's just hope she's not counseling any celiacs any time soon. -
ARCHIVED Most Ridiculous Gluten Comment I've Heard
Nadtorious replied to C-Girl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh my.....it's been a long time since I've posted on this site but I HAD to after reading this thread. 1) Once asked a waitress what salads were gluten free. She pointed them out, then told me a couple I couldn't have because they contained Romaine. Apparently Romaine contains gluten.....? I actually wanted to order one of the salads that had Romaine... -
ARCHIVED Glutened At Xmas Party
Nadtorious replied to Nadtorious's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thank you all for your replies. I guess I should clarify: I didn't expect this host to go out of her way to cook me a gluten free meal, and I brought several gluten free goodies to the party to share. I have a hard time saying no to people who insist what they've made is gluten free without feeling like I'm being rude (not just at parties but at work, etc... -
ARCHIVED Glutened At Xmas Party
Nadtorious posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
So I went to a party Friday night, the hostess made me some "gluten free" soup and breadsticks....after some polite inquiries into the soup's ingredients, we realized it was not gluten free. She felt bad, and 10 minutes later walked over with a couple of the breadsticks she got especially for me. Well, I ate them, and went up to thank her when I realized... -
ARCHIVED ***what Problems Did You Have After Having Mono?****
Nadtorious replied to azmom3's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had mono in high school and my celiac symptoms developed shortly after recovery. I guess you could say I haven't been the same since -
I had the same thing happen after I went gluten free, but I think it was a combination of a few things. Your body is absorbing more iron, but you're also able to use all the nutrients and energy from the foods you're eating. Iron deficiancy will definetely make you tired though! The first 6 months I was gluten free I CRAVED iron-rich foods all the time-I...

I haven't eaten out in 3 years. I've taken my own food into restaurants and enjoyed eating with friends and family, but I won't risk it. I've worked in a restaurant that had a "gluten free" menu (before I was diagnosed) and I know none of the people who prepared the food took it seriously. I'm too sensitive, and will be sick for days if I get any kind of...

You may want to try white rice-like Lundberg, which says gluten free right on the bag-if brown rice is giving you problems. I've been diagnosed for 3 years and (knock on wood) haven't had a reaction in months, but brown rice still gives me issues Definetly try cutting out dairy and the almond milk for a while. I didn't start feeling better until everything...

ARCHIVED Is Kissing Gluten Free?
Nadtorious replied to Katie O'Rourke's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I've always used the excuse "I've been sick" to keep people out of my water, but sometimes I wonder if they're catching on I've never gotten sick from kissing my bf, even a couple minutes after he's had a beer. I thought I was the only one who did the "are you safe?" check before kissing him-to which he usually responds with an eye roll. Nadia -
I agree with avoiding energy bars and the like. I race mountain bikes comptetively and train between 25-30 hours per week. I don't eat anything processed as well. I rely on lots of fruits, veggies, eggs, fish, nuts, grass fed meat, and whole grains for my energy, and I've never felt better-no need to struggle with weight or energy levels). I second (or third...

ARCHIVED I'm New And Need Help For College
Nadtorious replied to bekkisue's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I went to SIU (go Salukis!) and lived in the dorms. I went to the school dietician and told her I was a celiac. They gave me a huge catalog I could order food from-Ener-g, Amy's, all the good stuff.....I ate like a queen when I was in school! I didn't eat out a whole lot-usually just at steak places (plain meat and potatoes and veggies), but when I went out... -
ARCHIVED Calling All "old Timers"
Nadtorious replied to DingoGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've been dx'ed for over 3 years now. I guess I should think of the things that didn't get better after switching to a gluten free diet because so many things did! No more seasonal allergies, no more depression, hypoglycemia, breathing problems, stomach issues, skin problems, frequent illnesses, anemia, feeling faint, anxious, oh jeez, so many..........my... -
ARCHIVED Mi-del's
Nadtorious replied to GlutenFreeAl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
A couple of years ago the company got in trouble with the governement (Canadian, I believe) because their gluten free cookies were contaminated. I got terribly ill from them a couple years back and haven't tried them since they put the warning on the back. Good luck and hope you're feeling better-if you think they're making you sick, then by all means, don... -
Already said, but Vitamin Cottage has an awesome selection! Better than Whole Foods and Wild Oats combined! I don't eat out, so I can't help you on that end. I used to live in the Chicagoland area and actually have an easier time out here now finding food. Good luck! Nadia

ARCHIVED gluten-free Energy Foods
Nadtorious replied to uk sal's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I race mountain bikes and rely on things like buckwheat and quinoa more than brown rice. I also eat a lot of coconut oil for MCT's (a great source of energy). And eat a lot of Omega 3's to help speed recovery! Nadia -

ARCHIVED Is Anyone Juicing?
Nadtorious replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I got a champion juicer for Xmas and I love it! I make apple carrot juice almost every morning, and my own peanut butter and lots of other goodies. Sometimes when I don't feel like a "solid" breakfast, I'll just have a big glass of juice. And it's not that expensive-I buy big bags of carrots and apples and it probably costs nearly the same as bottled juices... -
ARCHIVED To The 'senior' Celiacs
Nadtorious replied to danikali's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Well, not to hog this section, but my other intolerances are egg, dairy, soy (in large doses), and some nuts, ummmmmm............ I think that's it. Every now and then I'll make a pie with an egg and some soymilk in it and just pay the consequences (usually just a little discomfort) I cut out all processed foods during an elimination diet trial 2 years... -
ARCHIVED To The 'senior' Celiacs
Nadtorious replied to danikali's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I don't know if I'm considered a senior celiac or not, but I've been dx'd for 3 years and have been unsymptomatic for almost 2 years now. A few things I've noticed: I am more in touch with my body now than when I was diagnosed. I don't know if I have more food intolerances now than at the time of my diagnosis, but I know that I can definetly tell when... -
From what I've read wild salmon is better than farm raised because of higher levels of Omega 3's. Farm raised fish are not fed their natural diet, therefore, they are lighter in color and lower in omegas (the reason all farm raised salmon contains dye!). I'm not sure of the mercury levels though-I know lately they've said that salmon is lower in mercury than...

I've been diagnosed for 3 years and will still have nightmares about eating grilled cheese! I'll somehow convince myself I don't have celiac disease and then eat a sandwich and then realize what I've done and wake up in a cold sweat

ARCHIVED Non-celiac, But Gluten Free....
Nadtorious replied to jajus100's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My blood tests came back negative, but my WONDERFUL GI initially based my diagnosis on the fact that my period, which had disappeared for 3 years, finally returned after only a week on a gluten-free diet. Later, my endoscopy proved it, but only because my mother insisted I have it done . Listen to your body. Nadia -
ARCHIVED Sensitivity To Gluten Increased After Going gluten-free?
Nadtorious replied to GlutenFreeAl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've been gluten free for 3 years or so and can testify first hand that my sensitivity has increased. When the Dr's were first trying to diagnose me with a "food allergy", I just stayed away from wheat and felt great-I was still eating oatmeal and drinking beer. Then I got dx'd with celiac and lived off all the commercial gluten free foods and whatnot for... -
I used to get this pain too, and still do if I have repeated reactions. The duodenum (first section of the intestine) is in the upper right hand side of the abdomen and this is the first part of the intestines to react to gluten. Could it be that? I know if I keep eating something wrong over a couple of weeks, I get super sore and swollen in my upper right...
