    ARCHIVED Sugar

YES! I'm also sensitive to cane sugar. After eating cane sugar I react with tachycardia (rapid heart beat), panicky feelings, shakiness, irritability, nausea and eventually headache. However I also tested positive (IgG antibodies) to cane sugar on the ELISA test. Many people with gluten intolerance and/or celiac disease also have other food allergies...
  2. US BioTek is a very reputable lab. My naturopath sends all his patients' ELISA tests to USBT. You probably had the ELISA blood test for over 100 different allergies. Did your doc give you a copy of your lab test results? Usually USBT also sends a little "FOODStats Elimination Rotation Guide" book which describes which foods contain your specific allergens...
  3. What did your Enterolab test result interpretation say? Not having a high fecal fat score does NOT rule out celiac. Actually your positive antitissue transglutaminase score does suggest you have intestinal damage. My naturopath considers that score plus empirical evidence (abstaining eliminates symptoms) enough to indicate celiac disease. I'm sorry...
  4. I just finished a 2 week treatment course of HLC Symbiotic Intensive from Pharmax for people who are especially deficient in good bacteria. This is a freeze dried product which contains 125 billion bacteria per sachet (packet). I mixed each packet with water and took that before my evening meal. I noticed immediate bloating and gas discomfort which decreased...
  5. If you've ever taken antacids (like Tums or Maalox) or acid-blockers (like pepsid, nexium or zantac) you probably don't have enough acid in your stomach to absorb the magnesium from food you eat. Many celiacs are misdiagnosed with 'gerd' or acid reflux, which is often caused by too little stomach acid to shut the lower esophageal valve to prevent reflux....
  6. I have celiac disease and 4 other allergies. My husband has 7 allergies. We only have 3 allergies in common. So we must shop, cook and eat frugally, while avoiding all those allergy foods. Besides growing some of our vegies and fruits (mostly berries and grapes), we only buy at Whole Foods, Ener-G Foods and another local coop, items which we can't buy...
  7. My husband and I both saw a naturopath who uses the ELISA test to diagnose allergies to over 100 different foods. That blood test detects IgE and IgG reactions to food proteins. I also took Enterolab's soy, yeast and egg (IgA) stool test which diagnosed my soy allergy. There are other allergy tests, but I'd recommend either a blood or stool test to detect...
  8. ROSEY: Dr. Wright's book suggests swallowing 1-2 tablespoons of cider vinegar or lemon juice in as little water as possible during the early part of a meal. If this lessens or eliminates indigestion and/or heartburn, then it's reasonable to conclude that your symptoms are a result of insufficient stomach acid. I was on Zantac, Tagamet, Maalox and Mylanta...
  9. ROSEY: Read "Why Stomach Acid is Good for You: Natural Relief from Heartburn, Indigestion, Reflux and GERD" by Jonathan Wright, MD. You can order that for $8.11 through amazon .com. With shipping charges you may pay about $11. He describes natural ways to relieve hypoacidity symptoms besides taking HCl and which foods exacerbate GERD so you can avoid...
  10. If you ever took antibiotics, you NEED probiotics. If you abstain from gluten and other foods allergies, but STILL have gas, bloating and/or cramping pains, you NEED probiotics. If you have constipation which is unresolved by dietary fiber, fluids or magnesium supplements, you NEED probiotics. By 'dietary fiber' I don't mean fiber supplements, like 'Fiber...
  11. Hi Kelly: Yes, the Seattle Celiacs still meets on third Tuesdays (7-9pm) at the Eastside Group Health Hosptial. Call Earl Ley (leader) at 425-747-1110. OR consider attending the SnoKingCeliac Support Group which meets in Bothell at the Northshore Group Health Clinic on 2nd Tuesdays (7-8:30pm) of each month. I lead that group and will give you directions...
  12. If you don't experience a lot more bloating and gas when you first start taking probiotics, that product is not changing your balance of bacteria. When you get enough good bacteria, you will experience obvious symptoms that probiotics are changing the way your gut processes food. There are many ineffective brands of probiotics on the market. Yogurt...
  13. I had a bad Klebsiella overgrowth which caused pain after eating even 2 years after cutting out gluten, dairy and soy. I took caprylic acid to kill the Klebsi kritters, then high dose probiotics to restore my very depleted good guy levels. Then I went on vacation and experienced no pain after meals and NORMAL stools for the first time in my life. Unfortunately...
  14. There are many celiac friendly Seattle area restaurants and grocery stores which offer gluten free foods. I know I posted a list of those restaurants on another thread. Do a search for Seattle restaurants on this board or PM me for my phone number. You can call me when you arrive and I'll recommend some restaurants in areas you plan to stay or visit. BURDEE
  15. EAT LESS! It's easier to eat less if you obey your hunger and fullness cues, rather than eat because it's mealtime, because you paid for it or because you're bored, stressed or lonely or tired. Also if you eat foods which are higher in fiber, you will feel fuller sooner. If you eat calorie dense foods, which are low in fiber, you can easily overeat before...
  16. Good point. If you try everything at once, you won't know what worked and what didn't. Good luck! BURDEE
  17. I'm sorry you're so isolated and must order everything online. The combination of Vitamin C and magnesium oxide helped me for awhile, but I didn't like the gas and bloating. You can improve digestion (increase your stomach acid levels ) with apple cider vinegar or lemon juice. Try swallowing 1-2 tablespoons of cider vinegar or lemon juice in as little...
  18. Anyone who struggles with constipation, whether that means infrequent movements or hard stools, should also consider probiotics. Our good bacteria produce Vitamin K and B vitamins, but also affect intestinal motility. Anyone who takes laxatives or products like Zelnorm should consider getting a Comprehensive Stool Test for bacteria, fungus and parasite...
  19. I don't know whether the vinegar is as effective as HCl to help the stomach absorb magnesium from the foods you eat. I never tried that vinegar test. With my history, years of taking acid blockers, I was pretty sure my stomach acid was low. However Dr. Wright, author of "Why Stomach Acid May be Good for You", warns people to test themselves for low stomach...
  20. HCl is hydrochloric acid, which our stomach needs for proper digestion of proteins. Many celiacs before diagnosis and following a gluten free diet have indigestion and even reflux. They are often misdiagnosed with GERD, gastritis or excess stomach acid. However few people have excess stomach acid. Most have too little acid which creates digestive problems...
  21. I lead a celiac support group. I also have 4 other food allergies, besides gluten intolerance. Many gluten-free food companies send me free samples for my group members. However those gluten-free foods often contain dairy, soy, eggs and cane sugar to which I have allergies. So when I provide free gluten-free samples to my group, I also provide literature...
  22. Jabberwife: I tried psyllium in a 'FiberCon' pill several years before I learned I have celiac disease. Either the FiberCon had gluten or psyllium was a TOTAL DISASTER for me. I have NO problem getting enough fiber in my diet. I LOVE high fiber gluten-free breads and cereals, nuts, fresh fruits and vegies. However I used to get so much fiber that I occasionally...
  23. I have only tried 2 brands of certified gluten free oats. The 'Gift of Nature' oats are certified at lesss than 12 parts per million. I get painful gut cramps and bloating every time I eat them. (I just reacted again today.) However the 'Gluten Free Oats' brand was certified at less than 3 parts per million. I ate that brand several times and never had...
  24. Did you mean the FFL corn or brown rice tortillas fell apart? I find that the corn tortillas fall apart, but the brown rice tortillas don't. I only use TJ's corn tortillas for tostada salads. They don't roll well at all. BURDEE
