  1. My allergies to casein and soy don't leave me many butter substitutes. However I use tahini on some vegies (like squash) and coconut oil (solid form) on breads and corn or other vegies I formerly used butter. I make my own cashew based mayonnaise, because I also have an egg allergy. It's challenging to find suitable, safe substitutes for condiments with...
  2. Hi Jilly: Even after a few years off gluten and my other 6 food allergens, I STILL had horrible fingernails (thin, vertical ridges, tear easily). Fortunately I have thick hair. In "Why Stomach Acid is Good for You" Jonathon Wright, MD says that protein deficiency usually manifests in thin, tearing fingernails and/or thinning hair in women. After I started...
  3. Rather than considering the source of the alcohol in extracts, consider whether you might have an allergy to vanilla. If you had long undiagnosed celiac disease, you may have developed other allergies through your 'leaky gut'. After testing for many different foods, my naturopath finally gave me an allergy (ELISA Blood) test for herbs and spices. My antibody...
  4. I was misdiagnosed with 'gastritis' almost 20 years before I was accurately diagnosed with celiac disease. Most people in their 40s have too little stomach acid, not too much. Without enough stomach acid (low enough pH) to trigger the lower esophageal valve, it doesn't close properly. So stomach acid can leak into the esophagus. However acid blockers...
  5. We've visited Maui 3 times since I was diagnosed with celiac disease and 6 other food allergies (dairy, soy, eggs, cane sugar, vanilla and nutmeg). We usually stay in a condo in Lahaina. Right after we get off the plane and pick up our rental car, we head to Down To Earth (health food store) in Kahului near the airport. We can buy fruits, vegies, meats...
  6. If you ever take the ferry to Seattle, you can visit Whole Foods on Westlake Avenue. They have a huge selection of gluten free products. They even have fresh baked gluten free breads, cookies, etc. in their bakery. Ask the customer service desk for a list of gluten free foods available in their store. There are MANY other Seattle stores which carry...
  7. I can't help you with the cottage cheese or sour cream, but Ricera makes a rice based (casein/soy free) yogurt. See Open Original Shared Link for more info. I have used regular (not light) coconut milk as a sour cream substitute, especially if I don't shake the contents and just pour off the top, thickest part of the coconut milk can. When I went...
  8. My husband and I like the Rice Pecan bread by FFL. However I LOVE the brown rice tortillas by FFL. Those are much better than most corn (white or yellow) tortillas for wraps. My favorite wraps are refried beans with guacamole and peanut butter and sliced peaches. YUM! BURDEE
  9. YUP, all of the above, mouth ulcers, cramping intestinal pain and eye twitch, although I believe the eye twitch is related to magnesium ? or other mineral deficiency. BURDEE
  10. When I visited San Diego 2 years ago, I stayed in the Hillcrest area near the hospital. I saw Kinnikinnick breads at the Whole Foods in Hillcrest. Check the Whole Foods website for the exact address. BURDEE
  11. I had undiagnosed celiac disease symptoms for years and bruised easily most of my life, EXCEPT where I had blood drawn. My veins were easy to find. So I seldom suffered bruising, EXCEPT the last time I had blood drawn for an allergy test. The lab tech who drew the blood punctured my vein, which caused all the bleeding and bruising. My husband told me...
  12. OOPS! I accidentally posted the same comment twice. I deleted the second one, but couldn't delete the space.
  13. Ask Enterolab about whether soy intolerance means legume intolerance for you. Personally I don't think soy intolerance means you must abstain from all legumes. If you have reactions to other legumes, consider getting an ELISA blood allergy/intolerance test panel, which includes several other legumes, besides soy. I tested postive for soy on Elab tests...
  14. I also have a (ELISA test diagnosed) cane sugar allergy (or intolerance, for purists LOL). My naturopath posted in his newsletter the following guidelines for recognizing cane vs. beet sugar at the grocery store from those 5# bags of sugar: There are two brands that exclusively manufacture sugar made from beets, the American Crystal Sugar Company and...
  15. Hi Rhonda: My naturopath is Dr. Stephen Wangen, ND, who founded the IBS Treatment Center in Seattle (next to Swedish Medical Center). To learn more about his clinic and his approach see: Open Original Shared Link He also has a website devoted to allergies. See Center for Food Allergies (Open Original Shared Link). His 'Innate Health Foundation' (which...
  16. I organized celiac walks with gluten free food fairs for 2 years in a row. For our route I chose a local lake path (2.8 miles) which was used for previous celiac disease awareness walks, before I assumed responsibility. Having a gluten free food fair at the start/finish point of the walk gives nonwalkers something to do and walkers a chance to linger longer...
  17. GRRRRRRRR!!!!!! (My first reaction.) My second reaction: The only ones suffering from our abstinence from foods which cause painful symptoms are people trying to profit from the food industries we avoid. There are enough kinds of foods and supplements available to provide adequate nutrition even for those of us with celiac disease AND multiple food allergies...
  18. Thanks, Tiffany. Gluten, casein, soy free ice cream??? I'll have to check for cane sugar and vanilla, but that sure sounds good to me. They must have great ice cream to afford a BelSquare retail shop. I'll ask the Bellevue GIG leader if he's tried that ice cream shop. BURDEE
  19. Thanks, Emily. I used to LOVE banana pancakes, especially drenched in maple syrup. I can't have dairy, eggs, gluten, cane sugar or vanilla anymore. So I'm anxious to try your recipe (with Ener-G egg replacer). Instead of butter, I put coconut butter on my pancakes. I'm sooo glad I can still have maple syrup. I LOVE pancakes soaked in maple syrup! LOL...
  20. I called Almay customer service several times within the past 2 days, since I learned most of my Clinique cosmetics contain either gluten or soy. They are VERY helpful and patient on the phone. I didn't want to wait for email responses and knew I'd forget to ask something in email. So I just kept calling with my questions. I also hit a local 50% off...

    ARCHIVED Informal Poll

There are several varieties of certified gluten free oats (grown in oats only fields, processed in oats only factories and verified gluten free). I tried and like "Gifts of Nature" and "Gluten Free Oats". I'm VERY sensitive to gluten (react with painful cramps and bloating). I did not react to either of those. BURDEE
  22. Thanks for this post. I called the Clinique number and inquired about products I regularly use. Just about every product (except Dramatically Different Moisturing Lotion) contains either gluten or SOY! I stopped using Clinique lipsticks long ago after reading that some contained gluten or soy. So I currently used Revlon. Fortunately the Revlon lipstick...
  23. I hope my hubby will also stop snoring after abstaining from dairy for awhile. Abstaining from gluten relieved his arthritis pain, but did zip for his snoring. After he showed positive reactions to dairy on the ELISA test, he cut out all dairy. I always got sinus congestion symptoms before I abstained from dairy 3 years ago. So I anticipate the day (night...
  24. When you're looking at the Elab home page, you'll see a list of options on the left. Click on "Information about Tests" about halfway down the list. Then scroll down that 'Info about Tests' until you see 'Individual Tests' on the left. About halfway down that list you will see 'Gene Test for Gluten Sensitivity/Celiac Sprue'. Click on that for info and...
  25. I was also Enterolab diagnosed positive reactions to gluten, casein and soy. I was ELISA (blood allergy) test diagnosed positive reactions to egg, cane sugar, vanilla and nutmeg. I STILL have many easy to prepare meal and snack choices. Here's some of what I eat: Breakfasts: Hot cereals (Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty or gluten-free Oats) with almond milk...
