    ARCHIVED Parma!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Ever since my dairy and soy allergy diagnoses, I've either gone without cheese or tolerated the 'Chreese' powdered cheese substitute on pizza and pasta. However, since my husband was also diagnosed with dairy allergy, I would love to find a tasty alternative. He can have soy cheese, but I can't. So I'm anxious to try Parma...
  2. 'Bacterial dysbiosis' means that we have abnormally high levels of 'bad bacteria' which prevent the good bacteria from digesting food normally. Docs should treat that dysbiosis with antibiotics (drug or herbal) and THEN prescribe high dose probiotics to repopulate your intestines with 'good bacteria'. Every antibiotic will kill off both good AND bad bacteria...
  3. My naturopath gave me a Comprehensive Stool Bacteria, Yeast and Parasite test. That's a take home stool test, which you send to a lab. I didn't have abnormal amounts of Candida yeast (fungus), but my test results did show an overgrowth of the Klebsiella bacteria. My naturopath treated that with caprylic acid and then probiotics to reestablish healthy bacteria...
  4. I just heard from Cynthia Kupper, Executive Director of GIG, that Bette Hagman passed away quietly this afternoon at home. No futher info was provided. BURDEE
  5. Hi Amy: Yes, the Lahaina Shores are right on the beach. It's the only Lahaina hotel with beach front property. However you will need water shoes to prevent coral cuts in deeper water. There are more expensive and maybe nicer hotels with beachfront property in Kaanapali (north of Lahaina). However I LOVE shopping in Lahaina. Also Lahaina has many activities...

    ARCHIVED Food Sensitivity Test?

I'm sorry your doctor was not very knowledgable about tests for food allergies. There are several different tests for IgG (delayed reaction) and IgE (immediate reaction) allergies to foods. I recommend blood tests or stool sample tests for food sensitivities, rather than skin tests, because skin tests aren't very accurate for food reactions, especially...
  7. The Rice Dream statement confuses me. How could they use barley protein and still meet 'gluten free' reguirements? Does their label declare gluten containing ingredients, like barley? I'll have to look at a carton of Rice Dream, when I go to a store. I prefer almond milk (because I can't have dairy or soy) which has more fats and protein than most rice...
  8. I never used Rice Dream milk, because I saw in very small print on the label that they used barley malt in processing that product. Barley is still gluten. During a 2005 gluten-free food fair I noticed some volunteers pouring Rice Dream milk on gluten free cereal samples for kids. I pointed out the info about barley on the label and told them that product...
  9. Before I learned I had soy allergy, I loved Pacific "Ultra Soy" variety. I never drank it, but used it on my gluten free cereals. It has more protein and fat per serving than any other soy milks. This year my dairy addicted husband was diagnosed with dairy, egg and several other allergies. So I bought him a variety of soy milk brands, including Pacific...
  10. We're heading to Maui again in October. Hawaiian Airlines has a direct flight between Seattle and Maui, but they don't have special dietary meals. So I pack my own lunch in my backpack for the flight (peanut butter and banana sandwich and dried fruit or sardines plus rice cakes and dried fruit) plus LARA bars if I need a snack between meals. We usually...
  11. Before my diagnoses of celiac disease, 4 related food allergies, and Klebsiella bacterial infection, I spent over 35 years using behaviors, which 2 therapists labeled 'anorexic' and 'bulimic'. I feared food. I feared 'getting a fat stomach'. I threw up after eating certain foods. I obsessed about eating and my body constantly. However after my celiac...
  12. Interesting ... where did you hear or read that 'reason'? My doc tested me for H. Pylori, because I had been previously (mis)diagnosed with 'gastritis'. Fortunately I tested NEGATIVE for HP. I would hope docs test for HP in people with ulcer or gastritis symptoms. Of course with so many drug companies promoting acid blockers to treat those symptoms, docs...
  13. If you're really deficient in good bacteria, yogurt may not provide enough or all of the probiotics you need. I took 3 treatment courses of freeze dried probiotics. During the last treatment which lasted over 2 weeks I took probiotic packets which contained 170 billion live organisms each. I dissolved those in water and drank that just before my evening...
  14. WOW! That's awful. Thanks for the correction and sharing your story. Luckily the same doc, who misdiagnosed my celiac disease symptoms for 10 years, did test me for H. Pylori. Of couse I had negative HP test results, because celiac disease caused my gastrointestinal symptoms. However I certainly didn't intend to imply that ALL doctors have changed their...
  15. BETTY: Nowhere in my first comment did I say YOU should take an HCl supplement. I only said that Nexium may have caused your digestive problems. Most food born bacteria are killed by our stomach acid before they reach the intestines. While I had low stomach acid I often got very sick (vomitting, cramping, etc.) after eating 'old' food, while my husband...
  16. Read "Why Stomach Acid Is Good For You" by Jonathon Wright, MD. Most people who are prescribed antacids or acid blockers actually have LOW stomach acid. Without enough stomach acid the lower esophageal valve does not close properly. So the stomach contents and a bit of acid can leak into the esophagus. Most people with reflux or indigestion do not have...
  17. Any kind of fresh fruit. There's so many choices during the summer. We grow our own blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and grapes. A handful of those are great snacks. I also like peanuts in the shell or roasted, light salt cashews. LARA bars are my favorite 'safe' snack bar, because they're free of most allergens. Unfortunately most flavors contain...
  18. There are some studies that suggest that undigested gluten and casein proteins, which leak from a celiac damaged gut, can travel to the brain and stimulate the 'opiate' receptors, just like morphine. So we can feel 'addicted' to the very foods which damage our bodies through antibody reactions. Especially sensitive to the 'opiate peptide' effect are autistic...
  19. I also love Breads by Anna. She came to a local celiac support group meeting last night with samples of 6 of her bread mixes. If you want to bake your own yeast or quick breads, I recommend her mixes. You can make sandwich breads or burger buns from her mixes. She also makes an easy to prepare pie crust. However, if you want to order premade breads...
  20. I also bruised easily. I could bruise my arms if I leaned against something hard. My fingers would bruise when I tried to open jars. I ate brocolli, spinach and kale almost daily, but I STILL bruised easily. Only after I got my good bacteria levels up high enough, I stopped bruising. Even though dark green vegies give us SOME vitamin K, our good bacteria...
  21. I totally agree. Neither of the airlines we use provide any special dietary consideration meals. Most of the flights don't provide any meal service. I've gone through calling and asking for special meals even before I learned I was celiac with 4 additional food allergies. I experienced lots of hits and misses with airline food. So after my diagnoses, I...
  22. WOW! Thanks for posting your Bahamas vacation experience. We also prefer a full kitchen accomodations for our 10 allergy family (my husband and I only share 3 allergies). We did so well in Maui last year that we plan to go there again. However I was so inspired by another board member's description of her safe (allergy contamination free) Disneyworld vacation...
  23. I have allergies to soy and cane sugar (which are often added to peanut butter). So I use Whole Foods 365 peanut butter which contains peanuts and salt. That brand is fairly inexpensive at $1.69 a pound. I also buy 'grind your own' peanut butter from a local coop or Fred Meyer. BURDEE

    ARCHIVED Jury Duty...

Maybe I should clarify my symptoms during bacterial infection treatment for which my doc got me excused from jury duty last year. I had a Klebsiella (bacterial) infection and was taking caprylic acid and high dose probiotics. Both caused extreme bloating (which caused cramping pain) and gas. I couldn't sit comfortably for very long. I preferred to just...

    ARCHIVED Jury Duty...

I was called for jury duty during the first year after I self-diagnosed celiac disease and then got Enterolab tests which confirmed gluten intolerance and the celiac gene. However I did not consider my local doc, because she misdiagnosed my symptoms as 'IBS' for 10 years. So I just talked to the jury duty personnel about my problems (frequent bathroom trips...
