  1. Thanks for the new recipe. Sounds yummy, but I need to ask what is 'agave'? BURDEE
  2. I'm 58, was diagnosed 18 months ago, but had accepted most of my symptoms as 'normal for me' UNTIL I experienced increasing excruciating abdominal pain after hemorrhoid surgery. That surgery was necessitated by chronic constipation which was due to casein intolerance which I suspected 50 years ago. BURDEE
  3. I like Kinnikinnick Brown Sandwich Bread and Ener-G Foods Brown Rice Sweet Potato English muffins and Harvest Bread. BURDEE
  4. We discussed that question at our celiac support group meeting last night! My symptoms of being 'glutened' are both typical and atypical. I get bloating, gas and excruciating abdominal pain which feels like bits of broken glass are stuck in my intestines. I also get extreme fatigue, but that's easier to handle (with rest) than those excruciating pains. ...
  5. I also found that Namaste pizza crust 'flat' and even harder when reheated the second time around. Those are basically baking powder biscuit ingredients, rather than the yeast dough I would expect in a pizza. However on the Namaste website at Open Original Shared Link are some other ideas for using that pizza crust mix as well as a recipe for 'Chicago style...
  6. IF I WERE NOT CASEIN AND SOY AS WELL AS GLUTEN INTOLERANT I WOULD EAT: yogurt, ice cream, cheesecake, carrot cake with real cream cheese frosting, oh heck, REAL CHEESE ANYTHING; butter on all my vegies and breads; ANY milk chocolate candy, fudge, chocolate truffles; real milk on cereal (those nut/rice milks are awful ), LATTES (nut/rice/potato milks fall...
  7. At a recent wedding we received small bags of pistaschio nuts as a parting gift. I had heard those nuts were nutritious and I like most nuts. However, when I tried them, I noticed a powdery coating on the shell. I thought they tasted like they were lightly salted and roasted, but I still wondered what that powdery coating was. I tried those nuts during...
  8. WOW!!! Thanks everybody. Now I can share these 100 suggestions at my support group meeting in October. We really DO know how to get through those contamination episodes and even learn to prevent future ones! BURDEE
  9. I have NEVER been able to tolerate sorbitol (or any of the 'tol' artificial sweetners). I get immedate symptoms which are very much like my gluten contamination symptoms (bits of broken glass stuck in my intestines, excruciating pain, gas, bloating and eventually diarrhea, although I usually don't get D from contamination expisodes). I read somewhere (I...
  10. Hmmm ... Nobody mentioned CHREESE, a gluten/dairy/soy free cheese substitute made by Road's End Organics. It's only useful in 'melted cheese' recipes, because it' a sauce mix. However, I've enjoyed it in omlettes, au gratin potatoes, macaroni and chreese or noodles and chreese recipes and even on pizza. It's not the same as packaged cheese and works better...
  11. The idea about getting a pet reminded me of a few more ... 69. Visit a pet store, even if you don't have time or money to have your own. I especially like whistling at the cockateils and dream of having one someday when I have more time and energy. 70. If you're feeling well enough to walk around, go to a local zoo. Nobody will notice when you...
  12. I noticed we got stuck at #54, so I thought I should add a few more to get this topic rolling again ... 55. As mentioned in my post, watch "Hot Shots Part Deux" for celiac humor. 56. Call a celiac friend who shares your SAME SYMPTOMS and ask her to 'talk you through the pain' (my best celiac friend makes me laugh during waves of dairy cramps...
  13. Hi Mandigirl: I'm not sure if you wanted a gluten/soy/dairy free chocolate or just a different kind of chocolate. If soy doesn't bother you, Tropical Source makes a gluten/dairy free chocolate bar in many different flavors (w/ almonds or hazelnuts or raspberry or mint or dark expresso), but all contain soy lecithin. If you really need a gluten/soy/dairy...
  14. I also learned I have soy intolerance after I substituted soy milk, etc. for dairy products after my Enterolab tests indicated casein (dairy) intolerance. My soy contamination symptoms are similar to my gluten symptoms (bits of broken glass in my intestines, bloating and gas) and to my dairy symptoms (cramping pain like menstrual cramps), but only milder...
  15. Hi Abby: I lead the Snohomish County Celiac Support Group. We current meet in a North Seattle location (Lake Forest Park), but previously met in Edmonds. One of our members wants to start a group in the south end of Puget sound, possibly near Valley General Hospital in Renton. I'm not sure how much progress she's made with arranging a location, but you...
  16. Hi Stephanie: Goat's milk STILL has casein, but a little less than cow's milk. The only way to eliminate casein is avoid all sources and substitute soy, almond or rice milks. Obviously, that won't work if you have soy intolerance like I do. BURDEE
  17. Hi Bonnie: I have 2 words for you ... MAGNESIUM SUPPLEMENTS!!! I had chronic constipation for YEARS due to casein intolerance and celiac disease. Most undiagnosed celiacs are very deficient in magnesium which helps the bowel absorb liquids to soften the stool. If you just consume fiber w/o magnesium, you may get an impacted stool. Also VITAMIN C can...
  18. The simplest (but not the easiest) way to improve your eating habits so that you consume less calories (which is the principle of ANY weight loss diet) is to learn to listen to your body. Learn to recognize TRUE hunger signals as opposed to signals for thirst, desire to eat from boredom or stress or to numb negative emotions. Choose to eat ONLY when you...
  19. The SnoCoCeliac Support group will meet on Tuesday, September 13, 7-9 pm at the Lake Forest Park Towne Center, in the meeting room of the Third Place Commons (on the second floor of the mall). We meet monthly on every second Tuesday....

  21. After feeling sorry for myself ever since I learned I have dairy and soy as well as gluten intolerance, because I couldn't find ANY dairy/soy/gluten free chocolate, another member of my local celiac support group found me some 'Elite' chocolate bars made in Israel especially for passover which are gluten-free/df/sf. The only problem is they are TOOOOO good...

    ARCHIVED Pf Changs

I also had a great experience at our local PF Chang's. I told the waiter that I couldn't have dairy or soy as well as gluten. So the waiter asked the chef to come to my table and recommend 'safe' dishes. She circled on my take home menu, which entrees and appetizers were gluten-free/df/sf. I learned the hard way that the stars meant HOT. On my next...
  23. Last year during our San Diego vacation I ate TWICE at Fleming's Steak house. We just sat down and told our waiter that I needed a gluten/dairy/soy free meal and they were VERY accomodating. I enjoyed my first meal there so much that we returned to celebrate our anniversary there. Terrific service, great food, and well worth the expense! One of my favorite...
  24. If the product lists 'malt diastase' as an ingredient, the company can't ethically label that product 'gluten free'. From what I've read, anything with the word 'malt' in front of it has been derived from barley. Have you called the company? I sure would ask them how they could label something gluten free if it contains barley. BURDEE
  25. Did the label say 'gluten free' or 'wheat free'? That can be confusing, but food manufacturers who use barley derivatives will often list their product as 'wheat free'. FYI Malt is BARLEY seed which is artifically germinated, dried and then used in the form of an extract as a flavoring agent. So malt ANYTHING is barley. BTW Rice Dream milk also uses...
