  1. Hi Emily- You are very ambitious!! Let me give you some suggestions from someone who's done some nonprofit work: 1. Take advantage of the national groups if you can, it will save you a lot of work and give you a network of support (not to mention pre-made by-laws!). 2. You may want to start with a more casual meeting ; I've found that if you bombard...
  2. The betamethasone is what is helping; it's a corticosteroid and helps reduce inflammation. The clortrimazole is an antifungal...it's the stuff that's in athelete's foot cream. The med info I"ve found says not to use it for more than 2 weeks, and it can mess up your blood sugar. I"m glad you found some relief, though! Open Original Shared Link
  3. Nasalady- Are his outbreaks itchy? When I went on Dapsone my body decided it was going through adolescence again, and I got pimples everywhere!! Not DH, that itches...these are little whiteheads. My face hasn't looked this bad since I was seventeen!! The last time I broke out this bad I was pregnant and the hormones made my skin awful. Ask him if this...
  4. I'll ask you a blunt question, no offense meant; is she worth it? Is the enjoyment of some foods so important to your well being that you would sacrifice a relationship for it? When I was diagnosed it was a huge lifestyle change. I learned that I had to change my focus from food to other hobbies that have absolutely nothing to do with food, yet can still...
  5. That's how I use it. It boosts the fiber in breads and muffins. I also make the kiddos a cheap hot cereal by grinding rice in my coffee grinder (I don't drink coffee!) and cooking it on the stove like porrige, then adding rice bran near the end. (maybe 1/4 of the rice I added). Makes a great hot cereal with milk and cinnamon! The Ener-G web site has recipes...
  6. Swalker, McCann's are not gluten free. Open Original Shared Link Also, it says so right on their web site. Open Original Shared Link "But we cannot guarantee that McCann
  7. ravenwoodglass is correct, do not go gluten free, and go directly to a dermatologist for a biopsy (and do not pass go and collect $200). DH can be resolved temporarily with steroids, but in my experience (and my dermatologists), the rash just comes back worse later if you're not gluten-free. It itches like a bear and can get worse if you have 'prior...
  8. They wouldn't even help with a statement like this? Open Original Shared Link Why don't you go the other way? List what you *can* eat and how it should be prepared, those ingredients only, in a clean pan. That may make it easier on both sides. Just as in the US, response to celiac varies...last fall i was at a Christmas Market and the man...
  9. 1. How long has your son been gluten free? If the rash is in fact DH it may take several months or a year before the breakouts completely clear up. 2. Does the rash itch? One hallmark of DH is that it is extremely itchy. Worse than poision ivy. 3. In my experience, after I went gluten-free it took about 36 hours for me to react to gluten...it may...
  10. Lola= From what I've read, yes there is a link between NSAIDS and flares. Open Original Shared Link BEfore I was gluten-free, the two things that would make my DH worse were iodine and advil. Make sure she takes a vitamin that is low in iodine (less than 150 mg), I use iodine free vitamins. I'm not brave enough to take advil yet. I've heard that...
  11. Aqua fresh toothpaste is gluten-free, they also make a senstive toothpaste. Open Original Shared Link
  12. How much does your daughter understand of her illness? I have a three year old son, diagnosed at 18 months, and I've brought him up to be wary of most all foods unless he asks me. We went to a picnic at my daughter's school and he said 'mommy, is there anything gluten free on table for me?" Granted, he does poke at things not knowing if they're gluten-free...
  13. You may want to look into getting him a thermal lunch set. THat way he can pack a hot dinner and it will still be hot when he needs to eat. Here's a really good review: Open Original Shared Link
  14. OOps, I forgot to add the link to the Japanese celiac dining card! Open Original Shared Link
  15. See this thread: https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/lofivers...php/t11811.html No miso soup or tempura (obviously). Stay away from eel, I believe it's the freshwater one that has the sweet sauce which contains soy sauce. Bring your own soy sauce, of course! I'd never heard about octopus being non-gluten-free. Stay away from futomaki, the rolls with...
  16. I love it when a post about french fries turns into a discussion of 'potato credentials' I know there's been tons of arguements about the fries, and I thought that in the past they were always gluten-free, the contamination was from workers who'd use the oil for reheating chicken nuggets and such. Yes, use your own judgement as to whether you want to...
  17. Allergic does not equal celiac...I was going for celebs with celiac disease. There are people with legitimate wheat allergies, too.
  18. Open Original Shared Link "French Fries: Potatoes, vegetable oil (canola oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, natural beef flavor [wheat and milk derivatives]*), citric acid (preservative), dextrose, sodium acid pyrophosphate (maintain color), salt. Prepared in vegetable oil ((may contain one of the following: Canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated...
  19. Sorry, I had to jump in here... As of today (actually, late April) the nutritional info on McDonald's fries state that they are NOT gluten-free. "French Fries: Potatoes, vegetable oil (canola oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, natural beef flavor [wheat and milk derivatives]*), citric acid (preservative), dextrose, sodium acid pyrophosphate (maintain...
  20. I'm with the previous poster. Half our family is celiac, the other is not. Any gluten is from frozen pizzas, bread, and snacks. The only gluten thing I bake is the big sausages of cookie dough, there's no flour dust in the kitchen! It will be easier for you in the long run to cook and bake gluten free. Use potato starch or sweet rice flour to thicken gravies...
  21. Thanks for the tips! Optimistic Mom, I have DH, which means I break out in a nasty rash when I eat gluten...I have absolutely no GI symptoms. Most DHers do have some villi damage, even if they don't have symptoms. The bowl of ice cream I had while watching Biggest Loser was the clincher. No more snacks after the kids go to bed for me! I'm a tea fanatic...
  22. I"m interested too!! Should we start a new thread? My weight has creeped up over the past 10 years about 15 lbs, and in the last 8 months I've put on another 10. I'm 188 now, with an ultimate goal of 157 (my weight when I had my high school sr. physical to go to college!). I turned into a stress eater, which I wasn't before. I have to deal with that before...
  23. Blood sugar levels OK, I had a lot of bloodwork done recently and other than the celiac everything is fine. I take a multi (iodine free, I have DH) and extra calcium. I have two kids so I eat healthy with them, fruits and veggies. My problem is I loooooove to bake. I've had to find new hobbies because the gluten-free goodies are too expensive to make tons...
  24. Well, of you put lotion on your hands, then eat something, you are 'eating' some of the lotion. Those people with dermatitis herpetiformis (DH, the 'skin celiac') are usually a little more cautious about topical gluten, but most celiacs are just fine. For me, if I use makeup with gluten and I exercise, if I accidentally get sweat in my mouth I'm glutening...
  25. Fresh meats and vegetables don't have to list allergens (Why? That is so ridiculous!), so call or ask. Perdue chicken has a list on their web site, and you can always go to the store's web site to see if they have a list of their store-brand items that are gluten-free. That's why I spend a little extra money and go to my local meat market; it's meat, no fillers...
