  1. I watched some of it on Hulu...the only beef I have is that (1) celiac is NOT a wheat allergy! and (2) his numbers about how many people have celiac are too high..he states 1 in 8 people in the US have celiac. Really, that number is high, even including wheat allergies! (wheat allergies are about 1-2% in adults and 6-8% in kids). I just hope the Sharks don...
  2. You're right, the oral dapsone is the only thing that will prevent outbreaks. Some DH-ers (myself included) have old lesions that take lots of time to heal, and flare up when we're glutened, and the topical dapsone can help there. I"m curious to know if anyone has had a breakout reaction and then used dapsone on the new lesions. I went on oral dapsone but...
  3. Yep, mushroom is right, no picking from the sandwich! Unfortunately, whenever you go to a conference, it'll be your responsibility to ask the organizers for the contact info for the caterers so you can plan a gluten-free meal beforehand. I had to do the same at a recent high school reunion, and fortunately they were extremely nice and accomodating....

  6. Another thing to try is Sarna Lotion, the one with Pramoxamine. It's a painkiller and helps reduce itching. Also, NSAIDs like Advil and naproxen can aggravate DH, as well as excess amounts of iodine. Make sure you aren't using iodized salt. You'll have to talk to your Dr. since you already have a thyroid problem, you may have to start watching your iodine...
  7. nasalady, before you switch drugs, you may want to have him taper off the dapsone for awhile. I started at 50 mg, which gave me my bad side effects. I lowered it slowly, a half a tablet at a time, reducing the dose every week until I reached one where I didn't break out. Near the end of my dapsone experience, I was on 6 mg a day, and my side effects...
  8. You mean, she's only six and the doctor said she could cheat on her diet until she's in college? Get a new doctor!!! That's ridiculous. Get Dr. Green's book "Celiac Disease; a Hidden Epidemic". Go to some national sites (the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness, the University of Chicago Celiac Center) to get some info. If her celiac test results...
  9. From what I've read in other places, and from other's experiences in my support group, DH can clear up in anywhere from a few months to 2 years. I've been gluten-free for 9 months and took Dapsone for several months this summer. I have no new breakouts at all, but some old sores on my leg are taking a looooong time to heal, over a year, and now I have big...
  10. Interesting link: Open Original Shared Link It says that 66% of DH patients have villi damage; however, this doesn't mean they have celiac disease symptoms. I never did. DHmom, DH and celiac are sister diseases. In celiac, the antibodies in your system attack your villi; in DH, those same antibodies attack your skin. The new drug that's being...
  11. Yep, but if you have DH it can be painful, just to warn you! Go to the drug store and buy a small bottle of iodine tincture (you'll find it in the first aid section in a brown bottle). Soak the pad of a band-aid with the iodine and put it on your skin. Wait for a few hours, up to 12, if you can stand it. If you don't have DH, you'll see a nice brown...
  12. Momxyz- Since you've only been gluten-free for three weeks, I'd go to a dermatologist and at the least get bloodwork done. The U of Chicago Celiac Center has some good pages on the appropriate tests to get done. You may opt for a biopsy,too...just make sure they biopsy near an active site, and not directly on a blister. Travelling can be a pain with...
  13. Thanks for all your comments. I was on 50 mg/day, and although my blood tests were OK (no liver or blood cell issues), I got one of the lesser known side effects; it weakened every muscle in my body. I kept pulling muscles, first in my neck, then in my foot (I still have plantar fascitis from it). I was also super tired and gained about 8 lbs. I cut back...

    ARCHIVED Dh?

A swab? You need a skin biopsy to properly diagnose DH. The doctor needs to biopsy near a blister, not the actual blister. However, your iodine experiment below pretty much cinches it... That is exactly what happened to me with the band-aid test. A huge blister, plus the other blisters nearby got bigger. My Dr. said "that's what I get for having...
  15. Does anyone else have side effects from Dapsone? If so, how long did it take for them to go away when you stopped Dapsone? I have some bad ones and am very close to stopping the medication because they're so bad. I didn't know how long it took before they went away. I have some topical dapsone from the doctor, and it seems to be working well for some...
  16. Open Original Shared Link Stephanie O'Dea has a new cookbook coming out, "Make it Fast, Cook It Slow" in mid-October 2009. You can preorder it from Amazon. Although not labeled as such, the entire cookbook is Gluten Free!! Her daughter has celiac disease. One more for my wish list!!

  18. "I am not interested in supporting research as much as I am interested in supporting the front line organizations who support people on a daily basis. They are the people making the biggest impact on a daily basis." In my opinion, the people who support others on a daily basis are those workhorses in our local celiac support groups. The main person in...
  19. Topical dapsone (Aczone) is used for certain types of acne. Open Original Shared Link The ingredients are below: Inactive ingredients: Carbomer 980, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether (DGME), methylparaben, sodium hydroxide, and purified water. All the ingredients are not synthesized from anything wheat-based (I'm a chemist), but as for it being...
  20. Ask if their crab is imitation or real, the imitation almost always is made with wheat flour. Of course soy sauce. Tamago (egg) is often made with soy sauce, again, ask. kampyo (shaved gourd) is usually used in mixed vegetable rolls or futomaki, and is marinated in soy. Usually the nori is plain seaweed, but again, ask. Of course, not tempura rolls...

  23. Last year I took my son to McD's when it wasn't busy and an employee was familiar with celiac and prepared my son a burger, no bun. Now mcD's has come out with a new Angus burger, check out the ingredients: Angus Beef Patty: 100% Angus beef. Prepared with Grill Seasoning (salt, black pepper) and Angus Burger Seasoning: Salt, sugar, dextrose, onion...
  24. Tetracyline you can get at your local Walmart for $4/month, it's on their drug list. Open Original Shared Link I couldn't find any other lists of drugs that are commonly used for DH. Hope this helps!
  25. Celiac is genetic; however, if you have celiac and went gluten-free, your symptoms should decrease; however, maybe some people's systems overreact at first until their body is used to the diet. I have DH (the skin form of celiac), and after I went gluten-free my skin symptoms actually got worse for awhile before they got better. This isn't too uncommon...
