ARCHIVED Chicken Houses - Farming
ChemistMama replied to DebNC84's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Open Original Shared Link A list of all the allergens from chickens. Maybe you have chicken mites! (ick!) Good luck. Also, there are people who have a topical reaction to wheat: this is NOT DH, since you get DH only from eating gluten, not being exposed to it on your skin (I"ve asked several high-falutin' doctors about this, and I agree, based on the... -
ARCHIVED Can You Get A False Negative If Already gluten-free?
ChemistMama replied to ruhbehka's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I was gluten-free for several months and my skin biopsies came back negative. I've read several places that it takes at least a year sometimes to get all of the gluten antibodies out of your skin, so at two years gluten-free I wouldn't be surprised if his biopsy came back negative. Since he's had gluten, I would try the iodine patch test near one of his lesions... -

I had 'suspicious' bloodwork (aka the old tests, not the ttg blood test) and a negative biopsy, but I went gluten-free. Some people get relief after going gluten-free rather quickly, and some, like me, actually have a bad flare up after going gluten-free before things get better. I took oral dapsone for a few months(I don't recommend it!), but I've found...

ChemistMama replied to Nancy Linnemann's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
bumpity! More info here!! Open Original Shared Link -
I'll be going to a conference this summer and staying near the convention center in downtown Minneapolis. Any suggestions for places to eat? I've found the local celiac support chapter's website and found a 3 year old list here: but would like some updated info. Can anyone help? I"ll be driving, so I'll be able to bring things with me, but as you all know...

ARCHIVED Now That I'Ve Got The Soy Sauce, What About Sushi?
ChemistMama replied to David in Seattle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Three other things that have gluten: fish roe, kampyo ( a dried gourd that's cooked in soy sauce, usually found in futomaki), and unagi (eel) that has the brown sweet sauce. -
ARCHIVED Need Help? Baking With Expandex
ChemistMama replied to irish daveyboy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
bumpity! I'm curious about this too. I'd like to buy some but am waiting to see how others baked goods have turned out! -
ARCHIVED Ketchup Problems
ChemistMama replied to 4berrys's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
How old is your bottle of ketchup? It may be that the store had old stock to use up, and what you have isn't gluten-free. Email Heinz the code on the bottle and see if it's from a batch that wasn't labeled gluten-free. -
Yes. If you do not, when you stop taking Dapsone the DH will come back. You will need to be gluten-free from now on. That is the only way to keep your DH under control. Some people keep eating gluten while on dapsone, but then in the future have the GI issues of celiac and corresponding complications(stomach problems, osteoperosis, problems from not absorbing...

ARCHIVED Positive Iodine Patch Test
ChemistMama replied to Smoly's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Looking at your signature, with your thyroid issues and type 1, and with this patch test, you most likely have DH, I'm sorry! My skin biopsy came back negative too, but my patch test was wildly positive. I agree, stay on gluten until after your biopsy. Until then, stay away from antihistamines like topical benadryl, they won't help you at all. You can try... -
ARCHIVED How To Put Weight On A 2yr Old?
ChemistMama replied to LadyAshleyR's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
First off, do NOT put her on a gluten-free diet until she's been tested for celiac. I know there is some question about the accuracy of blood tests for young children, but my son was diagnosed at 17 months and his levels were obviously above normal. After the tests, go totally gluten-free and lactose free. My Dr. recommended 6 weeks for the lactose free diet... -
ARCHIVED Kinder Uberraschung
ChemistMama replied to Ahorsesoul's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications

ARCHIVED Celiac Mom With Baby - When To Introduce Gluten
ChemistMama replied to mamonaco30's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Dr. Fasano at the U of Marlyand is doing a clinical trial on this very subject, and their preliminary results show that delaying the introdution of gluten until the child is at least 1 yr old can delay the onset of celiac. (He presented these results at a talk I went to last summer). Here's a link to his research. He's still trying to get subjects for... -
ARCHIVED Folgers Coffee - Can This Be Possible ?!?!?!?!?
ChemistMama replied to NorthernElf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You're right, it's not on their gluten-free list, so I wouldn't trust it further than I could throw it, which isn't far. -
ARCHIVED Goya Produsts
ChemistMama replied to scanita's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Here is their web site with a listing of the gluten status of their products: Open Original Shared Link It looks like they understand cross contamination, and the two items you list are listed as gluten-free, so I would say they're okay. -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Makeup For My Daughter & Gluten Moods?
ChemistMama replied to Benshell's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
For sure she should use gluten-free lipgloss/stick, I use Burt's Bees lip shimmer. You'll have to check labels and contact companies to find which are gluten-free (I'm not a lipstick wearer so I don't know!) I use gluten-free makeup because my son is also celiac, and if he kisses me he'll get glutened if I don't use gluten-free makeup! For a 6 year old... -
ARCHIVED My Dh Is Not Disappearing...
ChemistMama replied to Woolygimp's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Woolygimp: My DH got much worse before it got better. I eventually broke down and went on dapsone to clear it up. However, in one spot with the oldest lesions I"m still trying to heal them after a year due to secondary skin problems I ended up with because of the scratching. However, the posters below are right, it doesn't sound like DH. DH (1) itches... -
PS....anyone have any recent experience with them? I'm going to the one in Indianapolis.

I emailed Cheesecake factory about gluten-free items, and their response was the typical CYA statement (can't guarantee anything gluten-free). They no longer provide a specific list of items that you can order that can be made gluten-free, although they say they're working on a gluten-free menu. They suggest " non-marinated vegetables, chicken, steak, shrimp...

ARCHIVED Biopsy (finally Done Correctly!) Was Negative...
ChemistMama replied to mhalpin12's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
mhalpin12, I also had a negative biopsy, done correctly. My bloodwork was slightly positive so the derm. wanted a biopsy. Went gluten-free and had a major flare (which isn't too unusual, I hear). I went on Dapsone to help it subside some, and that cinched it: within 36 hours on dapsone it started going away (years ago that was how they diagnosed DH, if... -
Actually, there was a recent study that shows a gluten-free diet does reduce your gut bacteria, which is why celiacs should take a probiotic: Open Original Shared Link

ARCHIVED Perrigo To Label Meds Gluten Free
ChemistMama posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yahoo! Open Original Shared Link Starting in January 2010 Prerrigo is going to start labeling their drugs gluten-free. They are a major manufacturer of generic OTC medications like ibuprofen, acetominophen, etc. According to their web site they make generic OTCs for Walgreens, Walmart and Kroeger, and probably others. This is great!! No more... -
Could you post some links where you've seen studies where other halides block iodine absorption? I did some searching on how bromine acts in the body, and the only thing I could find is this weird instance where a guy drank 8 liters of ruby red squirt a day (contains brominated vegetable oil) and he had so much bromine in his system he got a nasty skin...
