ARCHIVED If I Don't Opt For Formal Diagnosis?
GFinDC replied to PointBlankGluten's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I suggest you skip the testing and go 100% gluten-free. We have seen other people post about having the beginning stages of DH and then doing the gluten challenge. Their DH became much worse than before and took a long time to settle down again. DH is nothing to play around with! Check out the DH section of the forum for more info. -
Benign/cramp Fasciculation Syndrom Questions
GFinDC replied to Leonard275's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had some twitching. After going gluten-free my gut would spasm for about 9 months afterwards. It seems to me it is something that goes away with better nutrition and time. It may take a few months though. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benign_fasciculation_syndrome Prognosis The prognosis for those suffering from diagnosed Benign Fasciculation... -
Hi, Welcome to the forum! Open Original Shared Link Ave you verified the cholestyramine is gluten-free? That's right, even medicines and vitamins need to be gluten-free. You would think you could trust a doctor to verify that for you but that would be wishful thinking. You'll need to develop and awareness of whats in your food, meds, drinks...

Hmm, the Christmas movies I remember the family always gets in some kind of big kerfluffle at the beginning and then they make up and hug and sing Christmas carols at the end. Sometimes they even open presents and stuff, and let the kids come in out of the snow long enuff to eat. Maybe your brother has watched too many Christmas movies and thinks that's...

ARCHIVED Desire For Auto Follow For The Individual That Posted
GFinDC replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Agree. I think that would be a help too Diane. New people aren't familiar with the forum and not aware they can set the follow option up. That info could also be added to the newbie thread, which might help. -
ARCHIVED Body Knows Best?
GFinDC replied to MashedSpud's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
*** Warning, some humor, some truth ahead. Maybe they will invent portable terlets someday. Make your life a little easier! Kidding! I haven't had your exact feelings, but something similar I think. I used to have trouble swallowing food, and would have to wash it down with water. Sometimes it would come back up, shall we say, explosively, and... -
ARCHIVED Do You "display" Your Diagnoses?
GFinDC replied to tonalynn's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I have some gluten-free t-shirts that I wear sometimes. I did a painting about gut damage for an art show once, and put up info about celiac disease on the wall for my art. No tattoos though, I can't see disfiguring my body that way. -
ARCHIVED Is Gas-X Safe/
GFinDC replied to CynthiaSt's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Cynthia, Try some peppermint tea or peppermint Altoids for the gas. If you try the Altoids, check they are gluten-free in Canada, I'm not sure about that. They are gluten-free in the USA though. Peppermint relaxes the stomach muscles and makes it easier to burp gas out. Or belch if you prefer. Looking at your foods list, I see you are eating... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge -- I Want To Give Up. What's The Point?
GFinDC replied to sonflawah's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi sonflawah, It sounds like she has something more serious than NCGI (non-celiac gluten intolerance). NCGI deosn't cause gut damage, that we know of anyway. I agree with Diana, talk to the doctor now and see if they will diagnose based on her reaction so far. If she recovered when she was gluten-free, and got that much worse being back on gluten, there... -
ARCHIVED Aricept For Celiac-Induced Neuro Symptoms?
GFinDC replied to Integrous's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Integrous, People sometimes have a gluten withdrawal effect after stopping gluten. That may last a couple weeks. If you do a search on gluten opioids you will find articles about gluten acting like opioids on the brain. The good thing about that is you can stop eating gluten (as you have) and recover. It takes time though for symptoms to resolve... -
ARCHIVED Sick, Shocked And Scared
GFinDC replied to biancad's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Bianacad, Being hypothyroid could certainly cause some of your symptoms. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is something celiacs get sometimes. It is an auto-immune attack on the thyroid. Vitamins and minerals being low can also cause many symptoms.- 18 replies

ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed, Underweight, Stomach Inflammation, gas
GFinDC replied to CynthiaSt's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Cynthia, Avocados are good for protein and healthy fats If you can eat peanut butter that is also good. You don't have to put peanut butter on bread. You can mix it into hot cereals like corn meal mush or something. Or eat it on apple slices. Some meat with every meal is a good idea. Protein is digested more slowly than carbs so it helps stabilize... -
ARCHIVED All These Symptoms Can’T Be Celiac, Can They?
GFinDC replied to Integrous's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Integrous, Celiac disease can cause damage to the gut lining, which impairs the ability to absorb nutrients from diet. Without proper levels of vitamins and minerals in your body, it can't heal or maintain itself correctly. That's called mal-abosorption. As you can imagine, mal-absorption can affect all parts of the body, including the brain. We... -
ARCHIVED Is Rice Dream Rice Milk Gluten Free?
GFinDC replied to CynthiaSt's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There have been several threads about problems with the Dream line of gluten-free products over the years. The search tool should help find them if you want to see more info. But yeah, they bother a lot of people. -
Dr. Fassano's research on gut permeability indicted that some people with celiac have abnormal permeability due to an issue with reaction to a control chemical called zonulin. That issue is often called leaky gut. That may not change with a gluten-free diet. Least that's how I understand it. So that would mean there is always a possibilty of new food...

Hi Aleka, I don't have kidney issues but there have been several posters here that had them. It's been a while but if you use the search tool you can probably find threads by them. Hi Stef, Welcome back to the forum!

If you are going in for allergy testing waitin4dave, they will probably need you to stop the antihistamines a few days prior. The tests may not work if you are on anti-histamines.

ARCHIVED Bloating - Help? :(
GFinDC replied to Waitingindreams's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Waitinindreams, Bacteria feeds on carbs and sugars. Things like rice or sugary drinks are big fun meals for bacteria. So it can help to avoid those things. I like Naturemade products myself. If you stick to meat and cooked veggies for a while it may help. Peppermint tea can help get gas out of the stomach, but you shouldn't drink it every day... -
ARCHIVED Nauseated And Reflux
GFinDC replied to CeliacStudent2013's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Trisha, It would be better to start a new thread, since this one is several years old. But no biggies, welcome to the forum! It can be difficult to figure out which foods are safe to eat when first starting the gluten-free diet. Instead of reading long lists of ingredient son processed foods, try eating whole foods. Fruit, nuts, meats, vegetables... -
ARCHIVED So Sick And Frustrated
GFinDC replied to pghkid33's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi pghkid, If you are in pain you could try some Pepto Bismol. It might help. If you have gas trapped in your stomach, peppermint tea can help. Most meds do have side effects, so it is good to read about those so you know what to expect. The askapatient site lets people post their reactions to various drugs. It's a good place to check side effects... -
ARCHIVED So Sick And Frustrated
GFinDC replied to pghkid33's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yep, I didn't think crumbs in an old gluteny toaster would make me sick at first. But I found out different! It really doesn't take much at all. Some people mark all their gluten-free items with a red x or something so the gluten eaters know not to touch them. And keep all the gluten-free food on higher shelves so flour dust or what not doesn't fall on... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed
GFinDC replied to Mac0030's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Mac, Yes, it is typical to have bloating and discomfort at first. At first can mean months too, not weeks. Your gut is starting to heal, and that means lots of things are changing in there. -
ARCHIVED Extremely Thirsty And Need To Pee A Lot After Eating Certain Carbs
GFinDC replied to JohanJohan's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Diabetes can cause people to urinate frequently. The body tries to get rid of the excess sugar in the blood stream. -
ARCHIVED So Sick And Frustrated
GFinDC replied to pghkid33's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi pghkid, Most doctors don't have celiac disease, so they don't understand what it feels like. And many of them are not much help when it comes to advice about diet. You are right cc can cause plenty of problems. Our immune systems are very sensitive and react to germs we can't even see with the naked eye. So a crumb of gluten you can see is plenty...
