ARCHIVED What Proportion / Percentage Of Foods Are Gluten?
GFinDC replied to justinclarke's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Rob, In the USA, an easy way to get a rough idea of the preponderance of gluten in a product is to look at the ingredient list. The ingredients are listed in descending order with the largest amount first. So if wheat flour is the first ingredient you can figure the product is mostly wheat flour (gluten). Another simple way to look at it is that... -
Hi Questions, I hope you are still eating gluten. The antibodie testing is useless if there aren't significant levels of antibodies in the bloodstream to detect with the tests. The antibodies decline in the blood once you stop eating gluyen, so it is not good t stop gluten until after all testing is done.

ARCHIVED Would A Little Salt Hurt?
GFinDC replied to Aquadan005's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Mission corn tortillas. They make triangluar ones and also round ones. -
Sorry to hear that Ken. Maybe fish or other types of meat would work? Soy is bad for people IMHO. It took me a while to learn that. But there is plenty of information available about the problems soy causes in the digestive tract. I just didn't bother to read it until my own soy intolerance popped up. Dr. Mercola's page on soy has some links to other...

Hi, the celiac disease testing is not perfect. They don't get 100% accurate test results every time. Sometimes people test low on antibodies in the bloodstream, but have sever symptoms in the skin, or the brain/nerves etc. If you think about it, antibodies have a job to do. So they aren't wandering around aimlessly forever in the blood stream. They...

Welcome to the forum Questions! So have you had the celiac antibodies testing yet? The celiac panel is the first step in getting diagnosed with celiac disease. It's important to get eh blood drawn before going off gluten tho. Newbie Info 101 https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/91878-newbie-info-101/

ARCHIVED Milk Allergy And Celiac Proving To Be Quite Difficult :(
GFinDC replied to Jen-1984's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Well, you had a good start on gluten-free. All you had to do was keeping going the way you were. You aren't as weak willed as you seem to think. You made it 6 months on the diet. If you can do 6 months, you can do a year. And if you can do a year, you can do two. You just have to decide you are going to do it. It's not a hard diet to follow once you... -
I don't know what % of celiacs are soy intolerant Ken. But soy is one of the top 8 allergens, so it bothers a lot of people in general, not just celiacs. I was vegetarian for 5 years, so I ate a lot of soy junk (ok products) during that time. Now I avoid all soy protein, but I can tolerate soy lecithin occasionally. And I tolerate real meat vs faux meat...

ARCHIVED Asprin Or Tylenol
GFinDC replied to w8in4dave's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well those dirty rats (parents)! Well you got your musical ability form one or the other or both too Barty, so it's not all bad. Bummer about the aspirin allergy tho. -
ARCHIVED Asprin Or Tylenol
GFinDC replied to w8in4dave's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I understand Barty. I wonder if your compounding pharmacy could make corn free aspirin for you? Seems like the could if they can do corn free Tylenol. Anyway, I just wanted to throw that warning out there for people since it seems most times people ignore it. Why I don't know. It seems to me if people have a choice between a medicine that is known to... -

ARCHIVED Things To Help With Healing.
GFinDC replied to Frosty-35768's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Aquadan, Celiac disease causes damage and irritation in the digestive tract. The point of going gluten-free is to heal the digestive tract, and get rid of the damage, irritation etc. So consuming alcohol, a known irritant to the digestive tract and strain on the liver is not a wise choice while trying to heal that same digestive tract. It's like... -
ARCHIVED Things To Help With Healing.
GFinDC replied to Frosty-35768's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Frosty, Recovery from a glutening can take a while. I've had symptoms last for 6 weeks before. It pays to be careful and avoid the gluten in the first place! Easy to say now of course, but we all make mistakes at the beginning. Simple foods, low carbs and sugar are helpful. Carbs and sugars feed lots of gas making bacteria which can cause... -
ARCHIVED Asprin Or Tylenol
GFinDC replied to w8in4dave's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Plain old aspirin is what I'd choose. Acetaminaphin is known to cause liver damage so I never take it. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Without Intestinal Problems?
GFinDC replied to Nick-incollege's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Nick, Reactions with celiac can cover a very wide range. Some people have no symptoms at all and they call that "silent celiac". There are members who have silent celiac on the forum. It just as serious as any other person's, but there are no symptoms. Not everyone has symptoms right away. A couple days delay is not real unusual. Ongoing symptoms... -
This Dr. Hadjivassiliou has done a lot of the newer research on celiac affects on the brain. Celiac can cause UBO's (unidentified bright objects) on MRI's. If you were on immune system supressers when you had the celiac testing, the testing wouldn't have worked right. Useless testing basically. Sometimes celiacs get what we call brain fog on this forum...

ARCHIVED A Shell Of The Person He Once Was...is This Normal?
GFinDC replied to mom2alex's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Gluten can cause withdrawal symptoms in some people. There is also a link to pschizophrenia and depression. But the symptoms tend to go away after some time healing. Have you replaced your toaster yet? That's one item that sometimes gets new people. -
Vitamin D might help. Seems like vitamin D is low in a lot of people who have celiac too. Coincidence? I think maybe, or maybe not? Head scratcher for sure. Open Original Shared Link ... In the new study, researchers studied whether raising patients' vitamin D levels to the recommended range would help with some of their symptoms. Thirty patients...

ARCHIVED Still Suffering Stomach Pains
GFinDC replied to mom2alex's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi MomtoAlex, Going gluten-free is not an instant fix to the digestive issues. Pain can last for months afterwards in some people. Or it can go away fairly quickly in others. We aren't all the same and there is a great deal of variability in healing rates and how strictly people adhere to the gluten-free diet too. If you think of the gut damage like... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else ?
GFinDC replied to Aquadan005's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Have fun at the butt doctor Dan! Hopefully it will be a simple procedure and over quickly. Nutritionists are a mixed bag when it comes to celiac. Sometimes the know useful info and sometimes they don't. If you can find a local celiac disease support group and ask them for suggestions on a good nutritionist it might help. In the DC area Cheryl Harris... -
ARCHIVED For Celiacs With Joint Pain
GFinDC replied to spirit-walk's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I get joint pain from nightshades, soy and hypo-thyroidism. No swelling so far, just sore joints. Well, no joint swelling, but plenty of leg and feet swelling. For me the joint pain stays away as long as I take care of the issues that cause it. It does provide some motivation! -
Hi Blazing autocorrecter, Tipos rn't unusual aroun hear. Mispeelings hapn 2. So no biggie. Brain fog can get the best of us. Autocorrect gets me pretty often. Oh yeah, you had a question about alcohol and leaky gut. I don't think there is any definitive info or research available on the topic. But the fact that alcohol does damage the digestive...

ARCHIVED Bloating - Help? :(
GFinDC replied to Waitingindreams's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
An elimination diet is a good way to find your other food intolerances. There are blood tests for allergies but not many good tests for food intolerances. So an elimination diet is the best bet.
