ARCHIVED Need To Speak To Moderator!
GFinDC replied to cougie23's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
This might help in the future. If you use Firefox you can set it to remember passwords. So it will automatically log you in when visiting the site. Another thing you can do is create a passwords or account or some other folder name and then store all your passwords in a text file there. Helps when brain fog is in control of the drivers seat for... -
ARCHIVED Lupin Flour Can Improve Nutritional Value Of Muffins, Study Finds
GFinDC replied to kenlove's topic in Publications & Publicity
I wonder if the lupin flour is made from the lupine flowers though? Are they even the same plants? I wouldn't want to eat it if it kills horses either. One of my nicknames a youngster was Hoss. Looks like they are the same plant. But there are safe ones and dangerous ones. Photo courtesy Nancy Heise Open Original Shared... -
ARCHIVED Upper Abdominal Pain - Under Ribcage
GFinDC replied to pondy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think I'll go with the first study then. And with my stomach which says yes, it does kill it. My tummie's opinion has a lot of weight in the argument from my personal perspective. Thanks for the links IH. -
ARCHIVED Winter Projects And Goals?
GFinDC replied to love2travel's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Yeah, it's fun. Nice people too. I haven't been to a drum circle yet. The church is near a college so the passersby are mostly students. They probably think it's normal church social therapy or something. Except for the rattan swords. -

Mastic gum is the way to go. It kills the h.pylori bacteria. -
ARCHIVED Winter Projects And Goals?
GFinDC replied to love2travel's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hah! Yep, The SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) is still active here. I am a subject of the Barony of Storvik. They are based in Maryland but DC is part of the barony. They are under the Kingdom of Altlantia. Open Original Shared Link They do fighter practice every Monday night at a church. Kind of funny, all these guys in armor whacking... -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Result Statistics - Place A Vote, Make A Difference!
GFinDC replied to Oats's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I tested negative on blood antibodies but the blood draw was 3 months after I went gluten-free. I did get a positive hit on one of the gens but I don't remember which one. I think it is the one that makes you grouchy in the morning though. -
ARCHIVED Winter Projects And Goals?
GFinDC replied to love2travel's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Ya all probably know about these Rolator walkers already, but that won't stop me from posting a link to a video on them! They are supposed to be really handy for people and light weight etc. And not too expensive either. So just for info, I am not linked to them in any way. There are lots of people who sell them also, this was just an easy video to find... -
ARCHIVED Update:post Doctors Test
GFinDC replied to Booghead's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
When I had first my thyroid tested several years ago I went to my GP. He had me get an MRI with contrast. Then he referred me to a thyroid specialist. I went to the thyroid specialist and he said I should not have gotten the MRI with contrast. The specialist said the right thing to do is get an ultrasound first. The ultrasound is much cheaper, less risky... -
Soy can cause lots of problems. If you are eating soy regularly and it is inflaming your gut, that could cause reactions to other foods. I suggest dropping all soy for a few months to see if it helps.

ARCHIVED Ugh. Don't Know What's Wrong With Me
GFinDC replied to Zipity's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh yeah, get the blood antibodie tests done. And then try the diet for 3 or more months regardless of what the tests say. The tests are not perfect and are not reliable if you are already eating gluten-free. So don't start the gluten-free diet until after the tests are done. I get constipated after a glutening and then get the big D after a few days.... -
ARCHIVED Does It Matter How Sensitive
GFinDC replied to finlayson's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
And we know that some people never test positive for antibodies, but they still have celiac. So just because a person doesn't show antibodies in their blood doesn't mean they aren't reacting. That's where I think Kenneth Fine's (Enterolab) stool testing makes sense. He says that the antibodies are concentrated in the gut, not in the blood stream. The... -
ARCHIVED I Had Hoped To Never Return To This Place
GFinDC replied to zus888's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Zus, I hope you feel better soon. I can understand your feelings about gluten free and the limits it puts on your life. I had similar feelings when I started the gluten-free diet. I got kind of emotional about being around food I couldn't eat anymore. Or shopping at the grocery store. There were whole aisles of food where I couldn't eat any of... -
ARCHIVED I'm Tired Of Cooking!
GFinDC replied to bartfull's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I like a pressure cooker myself. I can make a roast stew or some kind of soup in a pressure cooker in an hour. And you don't have to stand there and watch it like a pot on the stove. Just set a timer and turn off the burner when it chimes. Let it cool off naturally before opening or run cold water on the lid. If you want to spend money on processed... -
ARCHIVED Wondering If My Toddler Needs To Go Gluten Free!
GFinDC replied to erinmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I wouldn't try soy milk. There was a study not long ago published about people putting their kids on soy milk after they had milk reactions. The kids ended up having even more food allergies develop after being put on soy. Soy and guts are not a good combo. -
ARCHIVED Food For Life Whole Grain Brown Rice Gluten Free Tortillas Reacion
GFinDC replied to newyorkyankz's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I used to eat their tortillas but not anymore. I had bought their bread a few time a while back. The first time I had no reaction. The next time I bought a loaf and ate it I got glutened, and not just a little bit glutened. So you might get lucky and get a product from them that is fine. Or you might not. I decided no more for me. -
ARCHIVED Wondering If My Toddler Needs To Go Gluten Free!
GFinDC replied to erinmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think celiac testing in infants is not very reliable. That would be something to check out. Lactose is not the only possible problem with milk though. It could also be casein, the protein in milk causing a problem. You could try her on non-dairy milk (not soy though) and see if she improves. Rice or hemp or almond milk. Don't use the Dream milks... -
Just an update on the mastic gum. The pain is gone so I'd say it works. I am going to keep taking it every day for 3 more weeks though to be sure. I took 2 in the morning and 2 at night right before bed. And slept on my left side where the pain was. I figured the mastic gum in my stomach would coat the area and do it's thing. Anyhow it worked for whatever...

ARCHIVED Could This Be Celiac?
GFinDC replied to Cher18's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If your doctor won't test go a new doctor who will. Ask first if they are willing to do the test. If there is a celiac support group in your area you can check with them for a doctor recommendation. CSA is one group but there are others. Also check the doctors section of the board. -
ARCHIVED I Thought I Was Gluten-Free, But Apparently Not. Ugh!
GFinDC replied to Pixeleen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
First off, welcome to the board! You are not stupid for assuming things are gluten-free. The problem is that food processers use gluten in many many products as a thickener or emusifier. Think gravy made with wheat flour, it gets nice and thick. Gluten can do the same thing in salad dressings, ice cream or other products. So gluten gets used in... -
It can seem confusing at first. But our bodies are real good about telling us when there are problems. You just need to give it a limited number of variables to react to. Then when it reacts you will know what caused the reaction. Unfortunately when we are new to the gluten-free diet our digestive system is going through a lot of changes and reacts to...

!00% agree Jesgar. When I started reading labels for gluten I was confused trying to pick out the ingredients that might have it. There are so many chemical names on processed foods these days. And the ingredients in the USA at least are listed in order of content. So if sugar is the first ingredient that means the product is mostly sugar! Ugh!

ARCHIVED Can't Buy A Good Night's Sleep
GFinDC replied to coffeetime's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
feel for ya. Poor sleep is one of my main symptoms when glutened. You could eliminate the usual susepcts and eee if things improve. Soy, dairy, nightshades, corn, eggs, nuts. Keep the out of your diet for a month. Then try adding one at a time for a week befoe evaluating the success or failure. If there are no problems then add the next food for... -
ARCHIVED I Think I'm Missing Something....
GFinDC replied to upwitht21's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It can take a while for your bodies' gut flora to get right after removing gluten. It can help to take pro-biotics and remove sugar and starches. Dairy is a fairly common problem as the tips of the villi make the lactase enzyme that breaks down the lactose sugar in cow dairy. So it can help to go off dairy for a few months and see if that improves things...
