ARCHIVED IgA deficiency with 0.7? Yes or no?
GFinDC replied to Lizninn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Liznin, Welcome! Yes, one of the test they should do with a celiac disease antibodies panel is the total IgA. That's because some people don't make much IgA antibodies. They can't use the IgA tests for those people. They generally call that total serum IgA. There is a higher rate of IgA deficiency in people with celiac than in the general...- 7 replies

ARCHIVED red skin, pain, huge belly
GFinDC replied to ironictruth's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Ironictruth, You sound like someone who is going to be highly motivated to avoid gluten! My glutening symptoms used to last about 6 weeks. So that really encourages a person to be careful. But the gluten-free diet is a learning process, and we don't get to be experts at it in a day. At least I sure didn't! Something I used to do was eat only... -
ARCHIVED How many of you looked better after dx/healing?
GFinDC replied to Kwall's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My complexion used to be somewhat odd, skin pale and kind of mottled appearance. Bags under both eyes. Tick in one eye. All that went away after going gluten-free. -
That's good. Celestial Seasonings make a good one also. Tea up!

ARCHIVED red skin, pain, huge belly
GFinDC replied to ironictruth's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ouch! Link has some information on duodenitis. Open Original Shared Link I noticed the link recommends bismuth as one possible treatment. That would be Pepto Bismol in the USA. The wonderful pink liquid that keeps us sane. I keep a bottle or 2 handy, along with milk of magnesia. I wonder if the doctors did any tests to confirm the cause... -
ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed From Blood Test
GFinDC replied to kunger's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Kunger, I think it's nice to know for sure, but then again you don't get any gold star for getting an endoscopy. Or get to eat any differently. Sometimes people have children or relatives and want the endoscopy to be able to encourage them to get tested. Then there are clinical trials that usually require a diagnosis via endoscopy. Not everyone... -
ARCHIVED What is it?
GFinDC replied to Unicorn fairy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I tried looking this test up on the Quest site and all it says is the name of the test. That isn't a big help. They do have a contact page for questions, so maybe you can message them and ask what their test includes. They do say on their site that there is no test for non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) so it's not that. I guess it's not an elephant... -
ARCHIVED Question regarding the blood-tests
GFinDC replied to julle2424's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Julle, Yes, 12 weeks is the recommended time to eat gluten before a blood test for celiac disease. The DGP IgA and DGP IgG are preferable test to the standard IgA and IgG. They are more specific. They aren't real unusual tests, and are often included in what's a called a celiac panel. I can't say how much they would cost though. -

So why are you on protonix? *************************************************************** Open Original Shared Link Some conditions must be treated long-term with Protonix. Chronic use has caused stomach cancer in animal studies, but it is not known if this medication would have the same effects in humans. Talk with your doctor about your... -
Hi Ironictruth, I haven't tried it. I think i prefer peppermint tea myself from the sound of this stuff. Nothing terrible about it I suppose, but peppermint tea at least tastes good and warms me up in the winter.

ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed From Blood Test
GFinDC replied to kunger's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi kunger, Yes, people have posted multiple times about symptoms showing up suddenly. After surgery, after illness of some kind, after stress. Then again sometimes symptoms show up for no apparent reason. Other people have celiac disease for years with no GI symptoms. They call that silent celiac disease. You are right to stay on gluten until... -
I get increased ringing in my ears with some food reactions. I suppose your ear symptom could be related to B vitamins deficiency? Just a guess.

It's a big change going gluten-free EGS1707. Not just what you are eating is changing, but what all the gut bacteria in your gi system eat is changing. That change can cause some upset by itself, as the gut bacteria balance needs to change and reset to hopefully a new normal. I think it's best to avoid most carbs and sugar during that process. But some...

ARCHIVED What is it?
GFinDC replied to Unicorn fairy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, The antibodies they look for in celiac disease are antibodies to gliaden, a protein in wheat. They don't test for antibodies to wheat in general. Perhaps she was running a test for allergies? That would be an IgE test though. It would be helpful for you to get the full test results and post them along with the test ranges. They should include... -
Hi cstark, There is also a celiac related condition called gluten ataxia, which some people get. It can cause difficulty walking (coordinating muscles). We have a few members that have experienced gluten ataxia. There is something called UBO's associated with it that can sometimes show up on brain scans. People do recover from gluten ataxia though...

She should eat some gluten every day before the endoscopy. The usual advice is to eat gluten for at least 2 weeks before the endoscopy, and 12 weeks before a blood antibody test.

Maybe check McCormick spices. They may have a safe gluten-free cinnamon product. -

GFinDC replied to Crysvicca's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I hope everything works out well for you Crysvicca. Celiac disease affects the small intestine, while Crohns can affect the any part of the GI system. There is an increased risk of lymphoma for untreated celiacs, but it is a small % (as far as we know) of celiacs who actually get it. I've read somewhere in the past that the chance of getting lymphoma decreases... -
ARCHIVED Could this be Celiac? Help!
GFinDC replied to meg-c's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Meg, It could be celiac disease. Often doctors run only one of the celiac disease antibody tests when there are a number of other ones that could tell a different story. Some people fail the commonly done initial test but have a positive on the one of the other antibodies types when a complete celiac panel is done You only have to have one positive... -
ARCHIVED So could I be right or is he just an idiot?
GFinDC replied to Kricket73's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Kricket, I think you could do a really good elimination diet test in 6 months. You could start by eliminating gluten, wheat, rye, and barley. Oats probably ought to go too. Then consider eliminating all the top 8 common food allergens. I think in Europe the have a longer list of maybe 10 or 11 common food allergens, but in the USA it is 8. It... -
ARCHIVED Please help me understand all of this.
GFinDC replied to Crysvicca's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi C, Yep, you are still positive on the gliaden antibodies. Both IgA and IgG are positive and you have the DQ2 gene for possible celiac development. Ravenwoodglass has it right. I assume you are still eating gluten-free? It might be time to look hard at your diet and see where gluten might be sneaking in. -
ARCHIVED Hello new here. I think I may have Celiac Disease
GFinDC replied to pablito's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Pablito, One test I didn't see listed in the doctor's plan is a test for vitamin D levels. That should be included as well IMHO. Maybe he/she can add it to the current tests list. -

Hi cstark, I am sorry to hear of your problems! It can be pretty scary when our bodies seem to go wonky on us. I had only minor twitchyness in the past from celiac. An eye tick and some other minor twitching in various muscles. That slowly went away after I was gluten-free a while though. They say nuerological issues are the slowest to resolve...

ARCHIVED i think after 6 years of being told i was intolerant its celiac
GFinDC replied to kkgirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Kaylee, So it looks like your GI is finally convinced! Has he confirmed that all testing for celiac is done now? If he isn't planning anymore testing then you may as well start the gluten-free diet. It does seem like doctors are hard to convince when it comes to celiac disease. They sometimes don't seem to believe their patients could have it...
