ARCHIVED Gluten Withdrawal & Severe Illness?
GFinDC replied to SarahN's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Sarah, Any change in symptoms on going gluten-free means that gluten is somehow affecting your body. I suggest you start eating gluten again right away though. The testing for celiac disease requires a person to be eating gluten on a regular basis. If not a person can get a false negative test result. The test is either a ttg IgA or a complete... -
ARCHIVED Gluten intolerant?
GFinDC replied to Rdugdale's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Richard, Yes, it's pretty common for symptoms to be worse after being gluten-free and then eating it again. At least, at the beginning of the healing process. Months or years later, your symptoms may be lesser for a minor glutening. Those worse symptoms are why we suggest people don't go gluten-free before completing all celiac disease testing... -
ARCHIVED Gluten intolerant?
GFinDC replied to Rdugdale's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Richard, Your symptoms and reactions do sound like possible celiac disease. I don't know if you plan on being tested, but if you do you should resume eating gluten now. The blood tests depend on detecting active immune system antibodies to gluten (gliaden) in the blood stream. The blood stream antibodies decrease after going gluten-free. The ... -
ARCHIVED Celiac or NCGS???
GFinDC replied to Shelles's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Shelles, It could mean you have antibodies to the protein in gluten, (gliaden). When they do a celiac disease panel they test for immune system antibodies to gliaden, which is a protein in wheat. Celiac disease is not an allergy. Allergy symptoms are caused by IgE antibodies to an allergen. Celiac disease symptoms are caused by IgA or IgG antibodies... -
ARCHIVED 9 months on gluten free diet and NOT OK !
GFinDC replied to gfpuddin's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi gfpuddin, I don't think you need to worry too much about other food intolerances yet. But if you do an elimination diet is a good way to identify them. You might try reading up on the paleo diet. It might be a simple way to get started eating whole foods. You can try Mission brand corn tortillas as a substitute for bread. If they are too...- 24 replies

Hi, Did the anemia resolve after you went gluten-free? If it did then that might indicate improved absorption of nutrients. That would in turn mean your symptom (anemia) went away because of not eating gluten. Celiac disease does not only cause GI system symptoms. People can have joint pain, skin rashes, nerve damage, etc.

ARCHIVED Grants for gluten-free Businesses
GFinDC replied to Ennis-TX's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I don't know if there are any grants specifically for gluten-free products Ennis. But the SBA in USA deals with small business startups and may have information to help you. There may be small business incubators in your area also. Sometimes they are associated with university business schools and the SBA. Marketing a product commercially and labeling... -
ARCHIVED Celiac diagnosis
GFinDC replied to Viviane Souza's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Viviane, No, the antibodies to gliaden are learned by the immune system. They won't be forgotten by the immune system ever. The antibodies to gliaden are specific to the protein gliaden that is part of wheat protein. Once learned, the learning never goes away. Usually the doctor will do an endoscopy to confirm celiac disease damage to the... -
It's not fun at first EG1707, but after a variable amount of time you get used to it. I used to be pretty paranoid about gluten cross contamination, and I am still careful of it, but it isn't a big worrisome thing. I take precautions and do fine most of the time. Not being the exact same as everybody else isn't all bad. Most of your friends can probably...

ARCHIVED Could this be Celiac? Help!
GFinDC replied to meg-c's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi meg, A deficiency is classic celiac territory. Celiac disease can cause mal-absorption which leads to vitamin and mineral deficiencies. There has to be a reason for you to have a deficiency. Don't give up looking for the cause. Celiacs tend to have trouble absorbing the fat soluble vitamins. The sometimes have very good cholesterol readings... -
ARCHIVED Depression / anxiety issues
GFinDC replied to ChrisMelbourne's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It's good to hear things are going better Chris. Six months is still fairly early in the gluten-free diet. Things should be improving over the next few months. It takes a while for the antibodies to decline and the gut to heal. Stopping dairy helps many people because the tips of the villi make the enzyme lactase which digests dairy sugar (lactose). ... -
Hmm, we may be talking in circles a bit. My take on your words in red is that you think having D when glutened 1) means you your villi never healed even though you were gluten-free for years? Or do you mean, 2) your villi healed, and you ate gluten, and then the new damage from the recent glutening caused villi damage and D? #2 gets my vote. Anytime...

ARCHIVED Awol follow up
GFinDC replied to Awol cast iron stomach's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi AWOL, Since you weren't able to complete the 2 weeks gluten challenge for the endoscopy the results are not necessarily reliable. So to be erring on the side of caution I think you should assume you have celiac disease. Your doctor should not assume you don't have it either since the challenge was not completed. He has no proof that you don't... -
ARCHIVED New/need advice
GFinDC replied to Sunshine4Him's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Sunshine, There is a program called a 504 plan that some schools will follow if you get one approved. It helps the school identify proper ways to deal with a child's particular needs. Probably it is helpful to have a 504 plan, but they may require a formal diagnosis for it. I suggest you talk to the school and ask them about it. Tell them the... -
ARCHIVED Getting Glutened - Beyond Frustrated
GFinDC replied to Janstpatrick's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Janst, It might help to simplify your diet. Eliminate possibilities of gluten sneaking into your diet. It's pretty easy to make mistakes with your diet when transitioning to gluten-free eating. I suggest eating only whole foods for a 6 month period until you get used to things. Cross contamination is another thing to look out for. Shared peanut... -
ARCHIVED Please help me understand these results; celiac reflex panel?
GFinDC replied to Doityerself's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi DoitY, I also think the reflex teminology is confusing in this case. I read on another testing site that the reflex tests are done when the total IgA is low. In that case they perform the IgG antibody tests and call it a reflex test. Different site though so they may not use the terminology the same way. Your total IgA is not low so that's why... -
Hi plumbago, No, D is not a symptoms only associated with severe celiac disease damage, if that's what you are thinking. Every time we ingest gluten the immune reaction is kicked off again, and the damage starts all over. If we ingest gluten daily, the immune reaction never stops, and we end up with significant damage. If we stop eating gluten, the...

ARCHIVED Extra-Dietary Relief of Celiac Symptoms
GFinDC replied to WearyCeliac's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Weary, I think what you are talking about is refractory celiac disease. Refractory celiac disease is when the immune system does not stop attacking the gut villi even in the absence of gluten for a long period of time. I don't know a perfect treatment for that condition, but sometimes people use enteral (tube) feeding. Refractory celiac disease... -
ARCHIVED No grains at all?

We can't see the video carle. The site is banned from celiac com for spamming. Not having seen it, I'd guess they are selling something? -
ARCHIVED Please help me understand these results; celiac reflex panel?
GFinDC replied to Doityerself's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sorry Doit, Ok, I think I see what you are talking about. The serum IgA test? The serum IgA is to verify if your body does make IgA antibodies. Not all of us make that particular antibody type. you do make IgA antibodies though, and your reading is fairly high. the way I understand it, the serum IgA is not specific to celiac disease. It does indicate... -
ARCHIVED No grains at all?
GFinDC replied to carle's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Carle, Congrats on your symptoms going away. I did seem to have reactions to rice for a while after going gluten-free. But after some years on the gluten-free diet I can eat it again. So reactions can change over time. I was searching for an article on gluten in common store products, but didn't find it. There was a group that did testing... -
ARCHIVED Please help me understand these results; celiac reflex panel?
GFinDC replied to Doityerself's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Doit, The reference ranges to the right of the test result show the values the result ought to be in for normal readings (no celiac disease). Your results appear to show no higher than normal results that I can see. However, you aren't following the recommended process for celiac disease blood testing. The blood test is supposed to preceded... -
ARCHIVED No grains at all?
GFinDC replied to carle's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi carle, I wonder if you might have dermatitis herpetiformis (DH)? DH is a skin condition associated with celiac disease. the reason I thot of that is because you had a flare up from eating rice. Rice has iodine in it and iodine makes DH symptoms worse. DH is primarily a skin rash that is very itchy. Anyhow, congrats on your PSA symptoms reducing... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms Pre-Diagnosis
GFinDC replied to David55's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You are welcome David. They should take 4 to 6 biopsy samples for microscopic examination during the endoscopy. They then look at those samples for damage characteristic of celiac disease. The blood tests include DGP IgA and DGP IgG, plus ttg IgA and total IgA. You only have to be positive on one blood antibody to gliaden to have celiac disease damage... -
Hi Egs, Yes, it sucks that so many doctors are ignorant of ceilac disease testing protocols. We have seen many members post on the forum the same issues, that their doctor told them to try the gluten-free diet before doing the testing. Pretty incompetent advice from them IMHO. But it explains why upwards of 80% of celiacs are walking around undiagnosed...
