ARCHIVED Celiac or alternate(s) illness?
GFinDC replied to Recoded's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Right, 2 months gluten-free is too long before an endoscopy. By 2 months time though you should have a pretty good idea if gluten is the trigger for your symptoms. If they are clearing up by then and the only change is eliminating gluten then you know gluten is a problem. Testing or not, our bodies like to tell us the truth. -
ARCHIVED 1 week gluten-free and I'm frustrated
GFinDC replied to Fbmb's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Fbmb, It may be awhile before you get to normal bowel movements. It could be months or it could take weeks. The immune system hasn't gone away. It is still actively attacking your gut after just a week. SIBO shouldn't be a big problem if you avoid sugars and carbs. Those bacteria have to live on some kind of food, and its the sugars and carbs... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Nuts
GFinDC replied to plumbago's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
gluten-free Nuts Are you saying you are one or we are? Sorry had to ask. I agree with Nuts.com. I've ordered from them and had no problems. They tend to put cryptic messages on their packaging though so it may be while before you can get to opening it. -
ARCHIVED Peripheral Neuropathy, gluten, and dairy
GFinDC replied to Raspberry's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Raspberry, I am sorry about your symptoms. It is up to you, but if you want to be tested for celiac disease, you should do that right away. The celiac disease testing requires active antibodies in the bloodstream to work. After you go gluten-free, the antibodies decline and the tests won't be accurate. Celiac testing is usually a blood test for... -
ARCHIVED Relief! And it isn't Dapsone!
GFinDC replied to squirmingitch's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Hi posterboy, You should be "in remission" as long as you are staying gluten-free. The immune reaction does taper off and subside when we remove the antigen (gluten) from our diets. If your antibody numbers did not decline, it would mean you are not really gluten-free (something slipping into the diet) or you would have refractory celiac disease....- 47 replies

I cleaned up my cast iron skillet with steel wool and soapy water, It was fine. It may be simpler to get dishes for her that are a different color or style from what others in the house use. Also buy separate peanut butter, mayo etc so it doesn't get cross contaminated by knives. Sharing may be caring but it can makes us sick.

ARCHIVED endo. results - confused!
GFinDC replied to Fbmb's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Fbmb, Part of the idea of eating whole foods and avoiding the processed foods is to get better nutrient density/quality. Your body has been starved of nutrients by the damage to your gut. So feeding it nutritious foods is important to help the healing process along. Many gluten-free processed foods are not very nutritious or good for you. Think... -
ARCHIVED Celiac or alternate(s) illness?
GFinDC replied to Recoded's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Recoded, Welcome to the forum! It sure sounds like you have celiac disease to me. I guess your doctor never did an endoscopy? The endoscopy is the 2nd part of a celiac diagnosis, where they take biopsy samples to check for gut damage. Celiac is linked to certain genes and does tend to run in families, along with other autoimmune conditions... -
ARCHIVED endo. results - confused!
GFinDC replied to Fbmb's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi FBMB, You got some good advice already, Here's a little more free advice! Starting the gluten-free diet it is best (IMHO) to stick to mostly unprocessed foods, eat all your meals at home (no restaraunts) stick to whole foods like meats, veggies, nuts, eggs, and fruits. Stop all dairy for a few months as it is hard to digest dairy properly with... -
Hi Kurasz, I don't think they put heavy metals in canned foods. That would be frowned upon by the FDA or someone in the Gov. I think I read about a coating that is sprayed inside cans sometimes with certain foods to keep the acid in the food from reacting with the metal can. So it might be you have a reaction to that sprayed chemical coating, whatever...

ARCHIVED end of my rope
GFinDC replied to ironictruth's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree, if you are a poor performer on the current celiac tests, then you may as well go gluten-free for 6 months and see if things improve. Celiac testing isn't perfect, and some of us just don't get there with the current tests. Going gluten-free is not going to hurt you, except as far as further testing goes, but staying on gluten could definitely... -
Hi Kam, I have the same issue as far as vitamin D goes. Low for years. I take 5000 IUs daily now. You can also try eating oily fish like mackeral, sardines, salmon and tuna. They have some vitamin D in them. If your dizziness is that bad, it is worth a trip to the doctor. Have you tried taking B vitamins?

ARCHIVED Been gluten-free and still feeling gross
GFinDC replied to bekka12's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi bekka, When you don't feel like your diet is working for you, it's time to eliminate something. If you eliminate all the processed foods and dairy for a month, maybe things will change for the better. Don't forget to check your vitamin pills etc for gluten. I can't say I know of any reason for feeling worse after eliminating diary. Maybe that... -
ARCHIVED Been gluten-free and still feeling gross
GFinDC replied to bekka12's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Bekka, Celiac is not an allergy, it is an autoimmune condition. While there are not allergies that go with celiac disease, sometimes people do develop food intolerances. That could be related to the irritation of the gut during the immune system attack. It is possible to develop a food intolerance to any food. Dairy is one additional food intolerance... -
ARCHIVED Recovery From Neurological Problems
GFinDC replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Jerry, You may be low on some vitamins or minerals. Our gut is damaged by celiac disease and that makes it hard to absorb nutrients. The B vitamins are important for nerve operation so is good to take B complex. Vitamin D is also important for many things in the body. Your doctor should be able to run a blood test for vitamin deficiencies. -
ARCHIVED Bright side of Peripheral Neurpathy?
GFinDC replied to Ennis-TX's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Ennis, If it's healing that's good. It is definitely important to be extra cautious now. You should probably check your shoes or boots for forgein objects. It could be the boots/shoes are defective. For diabetics they make special shoes that have smooth linings without big stitches inside. My brother has Type-2 diabetes and he likes the pull... -
Hi Egs1707, It's perfectly possible to live gluten-free successfully. Yeah, we need to learn how to avoid cross contamination, and avoid foods with gluten in them, but we do learn! When I first went gluten-free I was sick very often, due to not understanding the diet well and not understanding the being very well after years of yummy pizza etc. But...

Thanks Eastie, I think I'd heard or read about the banana doctor at some point. I didn't realize he was linked to the SCD diet though. I went gluten-free in Dec 2007. When I first had celiac disease I am not sure though. My parents said I refused to eat my oatmeal as an infant. I don' t know if that is related. I had some gut pain as a teen...

ARCHIVED How much is too much gluten?
GFinDC replied to jkittyberry's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi again, I usually leave those "may contain wheat " items on the shelf. I translate that as may not be worth trying. I suggest you search for celiac support groups in your area and see what restaraunts they recommend. In my town Texas Roadhouse has been good for steaks, but I don't know about their other locations. The damage in celiac disease... -
Welcome to the forum Amanda! Boy, that sounds like a pretty rough time you've had. I hope your doctors referred you to a dietician for info on how to eat gluten-free. But if they didn't, no biggie, we have lots of experienced people on the forum who can help. There is a beginners' thread called Newbie 101 stickied at the top of the 'Coping With" forum...

ARCHIVED How much is too much gluten?
GFinDC replied to jkittyberry's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi jkittyberry, The FDA approved upper limit for foods to be labeled gluten-free in the USA is 20 PPM. That is a very small amount of gluten. The limit was set to a level where most celiacs won't experience symptoms/damage. That doesn't mean there aren't people who will experience symptoms at lower levels though. Welcome to the forum! -
Thanks Eastie, I hope you are feeling better soon!

Hi Eastie, The dentist I had in DC gave me ciprofloxacin. It never gave me any bad reactions. They only gave me a RX for 4 pills at a time, to be taken the day before and the day of the procedure. Here's a list of common antibiotics. Open Original Shared Link Seems they can cause diarrhea. I have 5 screws in my left elbow. The dentist...
