ARCHIVED Saw The Doctor
mushroom replied to pewpewlasers's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I find it interesting that you went out and had corn tortillas that night A few of us here have bloating reactions to corn (though you and I are the most extreme I have heard of). I would just add that corn does not always affect me this way; that was why it was so difficult to pinpoint it as the source of my problems. Sometimes it seems to depend on... -
ARCHIVED I Think I Might Have Celiac. The Doctor Didn't Give Me The Test I Wanted.
mushroom replied to milly85's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was thinking more along the lines of what other tests they did, Milly. Whether there was anything like IGA, EMA, or IGg, any of the celiac tests. If you have not had any of these done, you should have them toute suite. Did they test Vitamin D level, B12, etc? -
ARCHIVED Saw The Doctor
mushroom replied to pewpewlasers's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, and welcome to the forum, Pewpewiasers. You may be surprised (relieved?) to know that you are not the only one who experiences such episodes. It happened to me exactly one week ago. I had been searching the stores for a bread I did not have to bake myself which contains neither soy flour nor potato starch, and found a loaf of buckwheat/corn bread... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free And Itchy Itchy Itchy!
mushroom replied to wendstress's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I truly sympathize (from experience) with your itchiness. It can drive you crazy. I am sorry to say, if my personal experience is any guide, that these itches are probably caused by one or more additional food intolerances. Since I gave up gluten almost two years ago the following food groups have caused me itching (with or without rashes): (I would... -
Sorry, but it is definitely not safe to eat the filling out of a gluten sandwich. That filling has been put there by gluten-touching hands and has itself been touching gluten--plenty of cc there. I am sorry that you are feeling bad afterwards, but t'was not a wise decision. Yes, after you have been gluten free it is normal to have a worse reaction to gluten...

ARCHIVED I Think I Might Have Celiac. The Doctor Didn't Give Me The Test I Wanted.
mushroom replied to milly85's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
UTI's seem to be more common and frequent in celiacs, and microscopic blood is a common feature of a UTI. I do think it would be a good idea to get a copy of your results and post them and the normal ranges on here so we can see what they actually tested. -
ARCHIVED The Funny Pages - Tickle Me Elbow - The Original
mushroom replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Welllllll....okay! That little temper tantrum felt good; wouldn't it be nice to be a little kid again and lie on the floor and kick and scream and behave outrageously, AND getawaywivit!!! Of course some I know do that all the time, the outrageous behavior, that is... But really, sometimes isn't it a bit much to always live within the constraints... -
ARCHIVED The Funny Pages - Tickle Me Elbow - The Original
mushroom replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Sometimes, when yer silly gets lost, it stays lost for a long time And the sillier everyone else gets the more yer psilly hides from you; or perhaps it's not really lost per se--it's just that everyone else has found *your* psilly and is using it all up so there's nought left for you. And then when peeps start getting all clever and posting pictures... -
ARCHIVED History...and Can These All Be Causes
mushroom replied to Sniffy911's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi, Sniffy, and welcome to the forum. I don't know how much help I can be to you, but will give you some thoughts. First off, most of us who develop celiac disease are born with a predisposition to it. Some babies are born with it, but most of us who are diagnosed later have some trigger event which sets it off. For some it is pregnancy, for others... -
ARCHIVED Enzymes, Or No Enzymes?!
mushroom replied to Ruthie73's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
In the UK and associated countries vinegar unless otherwise specified, must always be assumed to be malt vinegar (at least that is my assumption, and damn, I hate it). I wish we could make them label it as malt vinegar. I am sorry you are suffering so horribly from it. I have never tried taking anything to ease glutening, although I know others on here... -
Hi Monica: I am a corn intolerant; if possible I get even more bloating from corn than from wheat but it is a different kind of reaction, without the nausea and after effects. I can however tolerate small quantities of corn without problem; it is only when I overdo it that I suffer terribly. For example, I can tolerate corn starch as an ingredient in...

ARCHIVED Frustration Of Bad Advice
mushroom replied to GlutenedGuy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have found less bad advice here than anywhere else I've been. Here, you are just getting the opinions of those who have been here, done that. And most of them k.n.o.w!! And you're here??? -
ARCHIVED Could It Be Something Else Too?
mushroom replied to Gfresh404's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think I would go to a naturopathic doctor for this. I find their assortment of supplements, although a bit pricier, has a much wider range of combination/solo ingredients. I took the full complement because stool tests showed I was not producing enough. The main one I took was by Integrative Therapeutics, called NutriVitamin Enzyme Complex. -
ARCHIVED Are Celiac Groups Ruining Their Credibility?
mushroom replied to truckergordon's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
When I cleaned out my kitchen to leave and come back home I called our local food bank and asked if they had celiac families they supported. They said yes, and I said I had food to donate but wanted to specify that it should only be given to the gluten intolerant. They were delighted to cooperate. -
ARCHIVED Could It Be Something Else Too?
mushroom replied to Gfresh404's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I can't remember, Gfresh, are you taking digestive enzymes. If not, I would suggest you do, if you are, I am "fresh" out of ideas. I am 12 months farther along than you and at your stage I was still using the enzymes; in fact only gave them up about five months ago. -
ARCHIVED Anyone Know About Nightshade Vegetables?
mushroom replied to Ellie11's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Count me in the camp of the nightshade intolerant. I had always suspected green peppers and avoided dishes like fajitas, etc., but was not truly a believer (my favorite side dish used to be ratatouille, forevvvins sake). Because I have psoriatic arthritis the bulk of the evidence seemed to suggest that these were inflammatory foods and best avoided, so... -
ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
mushroom replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi Chetalrim; we are always looking for new down under blood, we vampires. Just because no-one's posted doesn't mean no-one's around. I will check you out above, but please come back here.....I need a drink (whoops, forgot where I was, sorry, but do come back Thought I was on the psillies thread. -
ARCHIVED Confessions Of A Cook
mushroom replied to imsohungry's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I decided to make some mac and cheese for my parents. Now I have always considered other versions of mac and cheese to be a bit bland for my taste, so I hunted around for old, sharp cheese and used lots of it, several different kinds, and just made up a recipe by what I thought should go in there (not having made from scratch before) and being (overly) confident... -
ARCHIVED Hornsby's Hard Cider
mushroom replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I routinely drank Hornsby's for the last three months with no problem. Maybe for the supersensitive it might be a problem??? -
ARCHIVED Am I Just Healing, Or Are There More Intolerances?
mushroom replied to jabberwife's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Aaaahh, cheese, it is known as the great constipator. I definitely second the suggestion of trying the dairy elimination, but also bear in mind that it is early days yet. It takes more than three months to heal from this, and you do have to be patient. Also I found it was best at first to avoid the most difficult to digest foods; things like cabbage, broccoli... -
ARCHIVED Panadol Paracetamol Starch In It?
mushroom replied to Northland Lady's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Not as sensitive as to gluten. Bloating, gas, passing out if I eat too much corn, but that was before I knew. Now I can get away with a little, Garden of Eatin Corn Chips, one or two, and I have to admit I don't worry too much if corn is a very secondary ingredient. I am glad your arthritis went with the gluten I am not sure if my arthritis flare was... -

ARCHIVED Panadol Paracetamol Starch In It?
mushroom replied to Northland Lady's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I take Panadol because I can't take anti-inflammatories of any kind. I have problems with corn in US but not in NZ. I have not had any corn issues with Panadol and when I was in the midst of an arthritis flare was taking six per day for two or three months, for whatever that is worth. -
Two things stood out in that article: "# According to FAO, maize and wheat account for about 40% of the world’s food and 25% of calories consumed in developing countries. # Millions of people—including poor people in urban areas—get more than half of their daily calories from maize and wheat alone." No wonder it is hard to find any processed food ...

Hi Lynn, and welcome to the forum. My goodness, you are having a really tough time, but I think you are on the right track and have a good doc. Yes, there is a full celiac panel of blood tests; make sure she does total IGA as well as the others because if you are IGA deficient it invalidates the other tests. Usually if the blood work is positive...
