ARCHIVED Joint Pain And Celiac Disease
mushroom replied to tmhossain's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had joint problems for more than a year before I was diagnosed with firstly, polymyalgia rheumatica, then rheumatoid arthritis (although blood test is RA negative), and finally, when the psoriasis appeared, with psoriatic arthritis. All of this was since 2000. Went gluten free November 2007. Sadly for me, the joint problems have not resolved; I have... -
ARCHIVED Some Ideas For Gluten Free And No Nightshades
mushroom replied to Lisa79's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I started a thread on this a while ago; here is a link: https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/lofivers...php/t55222.html At least I had a year of just gluten and soy free, before I realized that I had to get rid of the nightshades too. You will find a lot of help on this thread. The British Orgran pastas do not have potato in them, just rice and corn... -
ARCHIVED Article On Celliac In The Press Newspaper, Christchurch
mushroom posted a topic in Publications & Publicity
Unfortunately this article is not on line so I cannot provide a link. The article is about Dr. Rodney Ford and his allergy clinic. The author is somewhat tongue in cheek in most of the article, unfortunately. I will give you a sample of why it is hard to get our problems taken seriously: "And now he believes he has stumbled upon an unrecognised plague... -
ARCHIVED Wine Barrels Sealed With Flour Paste
mushroom replied to monkeydragon's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Sometimes the "oaked" wines get that way, not by barrel-aging, but by the winemaker adding oak chips So I was told by a winery rep. I imagine these would be the cheaper oaked wines. -
ARCHIVED New Gluten-free...how Long Until I Notice A Change?
mushroom replied to GottaSki's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
To heck with the virtue and patience!! That's why we went undiagnosed for so long, because we were virtuous patient patients. And look how we suffered... I am an impatient patient now (not obnoxious, I hope, but not tolerant of being put off). -
ARCHIVED Not Diagnosed (yet)
mushroom replied to lesson's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello, and welcome to the forum. I believe the answer to your question would have to be yes. If we all responded in the same way to the same food(s) each time we ate them, our diagnosis would be much more obvious. The only thing that I consistently reacted violently to in the ten or so years before I was (self) diagnosed was pasta, and that's why I stopped... -
ARCHIVED Confused From Self-diagnosing/reading
mushroom replied to IChaseFrisbees's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I missed this thread when you initially posted. I had c.Diff many years ago, diagnosed through Great Smokies Lab (now Genova), testing which was ordered by a western practitioner of Chinese medicine. He referred me to an integrative MD for treatment. (I had gone this route since my PCP had no clue what to do.) The Great Smokies report gave treatment suggestions... -

ARCHIVED Celiac Maybe? Ibs? What Is It? Help
mushroom replied to horsesrule1's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I see that you are a new member; welcome to the forum. The only recognized methods of diagnosis for celiac are blood tests, small intestine biopsy, or biopsy of a rash which shows dermatitis herpetiformis. Nothing will show on a CT scan. You can run a google search for gluten free/vegan recipes, but if you intend to pursue a diagnosis for celiac you... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else With Positive Doctor Experiences?
mushroom replied to princesskill's topic in Doctors
I had an excellent orthopedic surgeon who did my partial knee replacement. She had been a full professor of orthopedics at McGill University, but came down to work in California because her American physician husband could not get licensing in Canada. She was undoubtedly the absolute nicest doctor who has ever treated me, and the most thoroughly competent... -
ARCHIVED Going For A Test
mushroom replied to Anthony22's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The standard time for gluten eating before a biopsy is at least two months! You are right that a test at this point would almost certainly be negative, assuming healing has taken place. -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed And 1st Of Many Questions!
mushroom replied to pbc+celiac's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you are B12 deficient, that injection can really give you a boost. You don't realize how bad you have been feeling until you feel good again. I hope they are going to give you monthly shots to build you up. It will take a while. Good on them for testing you. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free?
mushroom replied to Bosque's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Vinegar is the one ingredient that will put me off purchasing a product because unfortunately malt vinegar is the most commonly used here (it's a British thing, you know) so if it doesn't specify what kind of vinegar I must always assume it is malt -
ARCHIVED I Have Good News Regarding My Plight
mushroom replied to UnhappyCoeliac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Good for you! You *sound* ever so much better. We will always be here to keep you on track -
ARCHIVED Im Newly Diagnosed And So Angry
mushroom replied to ginnybean32's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think your anger is valid and to be expected. This *is* in many ways a life-changing event and one that takes a lot of adapting to, especially when you are not feeling your best. Lack of familial support makes it so much harder, but unfortunately you are going to have to give them tough love. Let them know that your health is the most important thing... -
ARCHIVED Vitamin Deficiency
mushroom replied to diannalynn0711's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My doctor said she was prescribing D3 for me as the over-the-counter kind did not work, and it says Cholecacliferol Strong 50,000iu on the bottle. I rechecked the article you referenced and here is a quote from it: "The project was conducted during the month of July, 2003. Subjects were randomly assigned to receive 1) no supplement (the seasonal effect... -

ARCHIVED I Feel Like I Am Taking Crazy Pills
mushroom replied to KristinNicole's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You should ask your doc to run the full celiac panel, if you havenot already had it done, including IgG, IgA, TtG, IgM, and EMA. Your doctor should be familiar with these. You story certainly sounds a familiar one hereabouts. I often wish all doctors would read this forum to learn what they should do with these symptoms. However, a word of caution; it... -
ARCHIVED Dont Know If I Could Go Through With A Biopsy
mushroom replied to KristinNicole's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am so sorry you had to go through that rotten experience. It must have been horrible for you. Have you discussed this with your doctor? Maybe you need more sedation than most. They obviously knew that they had screwed up since they didn't ask you the question. I think you need to talk it over with your doctor and find out what the problem was. He... -
ARCHIVED Absorbing Products Into Your Skin?
mushroom replied to Salax's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The consensus is that DH is by definition Celiac disease. If your question was, can you develop DH later after having been diagnosed with celiac, the answer is yes. My husband was diagnosed with "borderline" celiac, whatever that means. I have asked him to get the results. He went gluten free at the same time I did, but last summer he cheated with sourdough... -
ARCHIVED Bread Making Gluten Free
mushroom replied to Npceliac's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I drink herbal teas at home, generally the citrus-containing flavors, or cranberry combinations. When I'm near an espresso machine I drink decaf capuchinos now that I can tolerate that amount of milk. -
ARCHIVED Do We Have Compromised Immune Systems?
mushroom replied to foodiegurl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know that my immune system was severely dysfunctional when eating gluten, with constant respiratory infecctions among other things. Since gluten free I have also been free of infection. I have always had the flu shot because I have COPD, and now this year I just got it again (our flu seeason is coming on) because I am taking Humira for my PsA, which suppresses... -
ARCHIVED Sprueberg-- A Gluten Free City
mushroom replied to Lisa16's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
No, there will be Whole Foods (with "normal" prices) and Trader Joes; they will just not be allowed to have any gluten-containing products. We are not into depriving ourselves here, just enhancing our quality of life. There will be dairy-free and soy-free milkshakes, ice cream and chocolate all over the place and they will all be delish! In fact, no non... -
ARCHIVED All Or Nothing? Seriously?
mushroom replied to Tim86's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I do not have any trouble getting all the testing I need, including DEXA scans, even though self-diagnosed. And now that they have seen my deficiencies it confirms for my docs that my self-diagnosis was probably right. And after all, it was their fault for not thinking of it and making me do their work -
ARCHIVED Questons On Coeliacs For Newly Diagnosed
mushroom replied to katiewoo's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi and welcome to the forum. I can't answer all your questions, especially about thrush, but can get you started. Yes, most of us find that after we have eliminated gluten and then we get a little bit by mistake, we react more than we did when eating gluten all the time. It's like the body says, WHAT??? This again? I thought we had agreed to do away...
