  1. Every person's healing process is different and unique. There are some that I have read that have said they had a monumental change within days.... others had to be on the diet for months before they started to feel better. It also depends on how successful you are in totally eliminating gluten. Just about everyone on here has had to go through their...
  2. I guess it depends on who's perspective we're talking about..... My diet to me is normal, certainly to my family, I'm normal, but anyone else not familiar with me and my celiac disease, I would be "different"..... As long as I am "normal" in the eyes of the people I care about and the people who count, that's all I need. Although lately my pre-teen daughter...

    ARCHIVED Celiac Doctors

Probably not..... The specialist I go to is a professor who does specialize in celiac, but he is also an expert for collagenous colitis etc.... He is affiliated with St. Michael's Hospital here in Toronto which is a teaching hospital. That's probably as close to a "celiac specialist" as we will come...... Karen
  4. I'm already a pro (I am a Caesar connoisseur ) But because of the fact that the main ingredient (the clam juice) was off limits to me, I could no longer make my beloved "weekend drink"..... After a long week, there was nothing better than having a weekend bbq in the backyard and have a nice cold Caesar drink with it!! Oh well, at least I should...
  5. It is perfectly normal to feel the way you do at the beginning. You are one the same road that we have all travelled down...... You will get to the point where, believe it or not, this diet will become easier and easier to accept and adhere to. Also, there are LOTS and LOTS of "regular" stuff on store shelves that we can still have. Have a look: (make...
  6. Hi Gina! Well, the way I figure it, ranting and raving over the unfairness of this disease is not going to change one crumb..... and since one of my continuing symptoms is fatigue (some days much worse than others......), I am not going to use up any energy in being angry at the situation - I don't have much energy to go around!!!! Actually...
  7. I posted before about the one thing that I most mourned when I had to go gluten free was Clamato Juice because I used to LOVE having my weekend Caesar (it's a Canadian concoction with vodka, clamato juice, worshesthire sauce, tabasco sauce and celery salt, sounds weird, but it is delicious!!!!) Anyway, I almost cried when I e-mailed Motts and they replied...
  8. Boy, I'm tired out just READING about all this exercise!!! If you count running after four kids, including four year old twin boys exercise, then yep, I exercise 24/7!!!!!! Karen
  9. I also use Mrs. Dash quite a lot. They are gluten free..... Karen
  10. That could be quite useful for those who are looking to purchase on line, especially those who are in rural areas and don't have the luxury of having specialty stores or major supermarkets that carry gluten-free items. As for me, I am adamantly against ordering things on-line. I just can't seem to get myself over that paranoid hurdle that my personal...
  11. You guys are right, once a celiac, always a celiac. Thank goodness the doctors are starting to get their heads out of their ostrich holes and wake up to this disease. I went to my family doctor last week and during our discussions, she mentioned that she is now on the lookout much more for celiac than before, and that most doctors she knows now realize...
  12. Hi Jill and Sdore, Welcome to the board!!! There are a bunch of really great people here who are always willing to help (me included!! ) Jill, I just recently purchased my own bread machine and I must say I am having loads of fun with it!!! With the amount of bread I eat, it was well worth my while to purchase one instead of paying $6.00 a loaf...
  13. My "safe" food has always been potatoes. When I am hurting so bad that I can't eat anything, the only thing I can still have is potatoes, either mashed or baked. It takes away the hunger, fills the tummy, and is the only food that doesn't bring on more pain....... Karen
  14. You are right, celiac3270. She is an expert. She saved my butt a few times when I was trying to bake bread - I posted about my failure and what I did, and she posted back what the problem probably was - and she was right..... She is a sweetheart! Karen
  15. Wow! I never saw that over there!!! You are right, it is a very useful list!! Thanks! Karen
  16. Hi Sally, I honestly found the colonoscopy no sweat. I also was dreading it but decided later that it was for no reason. The prep for me was worse (next time I am going to get the softest toilet paper on the market!!!!) He gave me drugs (I know Valium was one of them), and I was still awake, was able to see the screen, hear them talking, but felt...
  17. Roo, You took the words right out of my mouth..... Kinnickinnick (sp?) tapioca english muffins are to die for and are excellent as hamburger buns also. They are awesome toasted with jam and peanut butter on them!!! Karen
  18. For bbq sauces, salad dressings, etc., Kraft is a lifesaver for us..... Kraft makes it very clear on their labels if it contains gluten. I use Kraft for all my bbq sauces, salad dressings, etc. etc. etc..... and dozens of other things they make. I feel secure knowing I am buying from a company who understands the seriousness of this disease and is willing...
  19. I think that the Canadian Celiac Association or American Celiac Association (or both) should have a yearly award to present to the company who most exhibits willingness to properly label their products and thus make our lives easier. It makes us feel like we are being recognized, and not ignored, when a company does something like this. KRAFT, YOU ROCK...
  20. I use Altoids. I know they are gluten-free although I read somewhere that their gum is NOT gluten-free. Here is a list from delphi: http://forums.delphiforums.com/n/mb/displa...iac&msg=39527.1 I have not tried any gum as I don't really like gum....... Altoids is made by Kraft and they have a very good policy of listing gluten..... Karen
  21. Congratulations to both of you!!! You can compare notes since both of you are so close in due dates... I have never been able to gain weight above my "normal"..... When I asked my GI why my body gained sooo much weight for my pregnancies even though I was on gluten for all of them (first pregnancy - over 70 lbs, second pregnancy 48 lbs, third pregnancy...
  22. Also, make sure your doctor checks your thyroid regularly during your pregnancy. My thyroid was all over the dial during my pregnancy and numerous times the dose had to be adjusted..... Also, make sure you take your thyroid meds and iron supplements at opposite times of the day (one in morning, one in evening). Iron substantially affects the amount of...
  23. Hi Lisa, I was also diagnosed hypothryoid just after my 30th birthday and have had celiac for many years now. When I was in my early 20's, my OB GYN told me that I would have a 50/50 chance of ever conceiving children due to having endometriosis. I am now 41 with four children, including twins!!! First and foremost, if you are planning to conceive...
  24. Hi Nikki, Is there lactose free margarine over there? Here in Canada, we have Fleishmann's lactose free and it is also gluten-free. Also, my GI said if I were to have cheese, hard brick cheese (I prefer old cheddar) has the least amount of lactose. Hope he feels better soon...... Karen
  25. Ragu is the only one that I buy because I can be quite sure of its gluten free status.... and it tastes good!!! Karen
