Did they test your antibodies to thyroid?

Those optical migraines are scary. Especially the first time. Mine were caused from birth control pills (17 years ago). I stopped having them when I got off the pill. But had one about 5 months ago after I tried to have some wine. I dont normally drink any alcohol at all. But had 1/2 glass of wine and it triggered one of those optical migraines. Bah!

That pie does look yummy!! I made my own recipe for pumpkin pie using homemade coconut cream, pumpkin, eggs, vanilla, honey, cinnamon, salt and nutmeg. I make an almond flour crust with butter, almond flour, salt, eggs and a bit of the yogurt. It is very very good.
I was in hog heaven today at the store as it is SQUASH SEASON!!! I got spaghetti, butternut, buttercup, acorn and calabasa. I have never had calabas before, so I baked some for lunch. They are HUGE so the store cuts them into manageable chunks. It was delicious...creamy and had a slight corn flavor. I dashed a bit of salt and some butter on it. Yum!!

Yeah...I was gonna yell CALL 911 NOW!!!
I agree it could be a pinched nerve. They can cause weird sensations and pains. I would talk to a doctor and see what they think.

Hey Cathy!
I hope someone responds. My Hubby teaches at USF. He is a History Prof.
You might also consider Craig's List. Just be specific that you are looking for someone that is Celiac or Gluten Intolerant. Or someone who follows a grain free diet would be good too.
The good news is there are lots of places around Tampa to get gluten-free foods.
-
Celiac isnt easy to dx. There are many stages to the disease and if you do not have a lot of damage yet, you could test NEG even if you are eating a lot of gluten. For some a proper dx only comes once they are severely damaged.
You could test POS on gluten-lite diet, but it is less likely.
You could up your gluten eating for 2 or 3 months and then test. Or you can just go 100% gluten-free and see if your symptoms go away.
-
It's true that vertigo can have MANY causes and you have to be quite a sleuth to try to find out why. Some of us never find the answer. But I am improving gluten-free so I have to assume it was either directly related to gluten or do to a nutritional deficiency because of gluten intolerance.
I was originally told a virus...but when it didnt go away after 3 months....I went to an ENT....then another....Then the neurologist.
Get this there is a form of migraine where dizziness is the ONLY symptom.
And dizziness can also be a symptom of anxiety (with no physical cause).
Many things to consider.
Most of all I hope you get better soon!

The address I sent the letter to was in Ohio. I am in Florida. So when she called I was surprised to recognize a FL area code. She is living in Jacksonville FL!! We are only about 3 hours apart. So we are planning to meet half way soon.
I am sure when we talk some more gluten intolerance will come up.
I will mention the connection to depression/bipolar.
-
Welcome to the board!
I would recommend you going to a Neurologist for a full work up and evaluation.
You can always try a casein free diet to see if your symptoms improve. I will mention that "trying" to be gluten-free does not work. You really have to make sure that you are 100% gluten-free for awhile to see if it gets rid of your symptoms. I wouldnt eat out for a few months and once better only at restaurants with a gluten-free menu. Check all cosmetics, hair care etc. for gluten. No kissing someone who just ate gluten. No old Teflon pans, cutting boards, toasters in the kitchen, etc.
Many who do not tolerate gluten also do not tolerate dairy. So cutting both is a smart bet.
Hope you feel better soon!

Enterolab cannot dx Celiac. You have obvious gluten sensitivity and a Celiac gene. Are you gluten-free right now? If you are not you can go get bloodwork for Celiac from your regular doctor.
If you do not care for an official dx of Celiac, then you can just adopt the gluten-free diet and get healthy. You need to be on it for life.
Yes, your kids can get the Celiac gene from you and if your mate also has a Celiac gene and passes it on, this increases the susceptibilty.
First, work on getting yourself well.

Im sorry your family is not being very compassionate or understanding. You may want to plan a visit to your doctor and take your Mom along so that she can hear it from an M.D. This might make it more of a reality for her and hopefully she will then spread that to others in your family.

I made a delicious SCD legal Pumpkin Smoothie this morning. It is getting cooler, so next time I am going to heat it on the stove for a yummy warm drink.
-
Are you convinced now?
-
When you get back have then test your blood sugar, Vassopresin (diabetes insipidus), aldosterone/renin, and your kidney function.
I am not an M.D. If it were me, I would try to find a doctor where you are to get checked out.
-
I do not know if gluten is what is causing your migraines, but I can tell you that since I went gluten-free I have not had one (except one small one when I got CC at Whole Foods). And I used to get 2 or more a month. I am migraine free!!
I really hope you get to the bottom of this soon. It is no way to live and I feel for you.

I tried it this morning too. No burping here. So I am going to add some HCL plus Pepsin to my protein meals for a week. I took one with lunch and dinner yesterday with no ill effects. Will like to see what a week will do. I am using a low dose of 250 mg. I might raise it after a week depending on how it goes.
I have taken HCL before years ago when I had obvious trouble digesting protein. Over time my body kicked back in and I weened off the HCL. Maybe I need a "booster" to get things going again.
Let's keep each other posted.
***Sorry we hijacked your thread Susan. But maybe it will help you too.***

Happy Birthday Lisa!!

You are so right Jenny. It totally changed who I was. I went from an outgoing social person to a homebound recluse. It is the worst of all and any symptoms I have ever had.
Thank you for sharing your story. You never know when it could help someone else.
-
Unusual thirst should be discussed with your doctor. It could be benign, but it could also be indicative of diabetes (which is common with Celiacs). There could also be an issue with your adrenal glands (aldosterone/renin).
I suggest seeing a doctor.
-
I have never heard of that Jenny. Wow!! So glad you got help for it. I looked it up. Did you have headaches with it?

Welcome to my world for the last 12 years.
It is not a fun place and I would not wish it anyone.
I went to 3 ENTs and 1 neurologist for it. I wont lie, the tests are awful. They intentionally make you dizzy over and over. I wanted to puke so bad and after both with the two different ENTs I felt so off kilter afterwards for a few days. I couldnt drive at all. It just sucked! The last ENT noted that the fluid in my right ear did not respond properly to several of the tests. He offered no cure. But said physical therapy could help me. And it did. They taught me exercises I could do daily and I was also told that anytime I made a movement that caused vertigo, I was to repeat that movement over and over until it no longer provoked vertigo. In essence this rewires the brain and teaches it that that particular movement is normal and where you are in space. It really did work for me quite a bit. I still have that "off" feeling, but since gluten-free it is not non-stop. Just now and again. So I am thankful for that!!
You should not do the Epley maneuver without an exam. If by chance your vertigo is being caused by a blocked artery, there is the potential for stroke doing those exercises. And if done incorrectly, nerve damage is another possibility.
I do know of people who just did the exercises anyway and were fine. Only you can decide if you feel safe doing them. I didnt. I got an exam first. I dont have BBPV, so they would have been a waste of my time anyway.
Here in Tampa we now have a center that focuses only on Vertigo and nothing else. They didnt have it back when.......But if it got bad again, I would go there.
I hope you get better soon. It really really sucks!!

Someone in another thread did a home test first to see if she had low HCL. I had never heard of it, but she said it seemed indicative for her and when she added supplemental HCL to her meals, she got better. Her chronic "acid reflux" went away with the first pill and never came back.
She said: first thing in the morning take a glass of cold water (6 oz) and add 1/4 tsp of baking soda. Time yourself for 5 minutes. You should start to belch at some point. If you start belching immediately, then you dont need HCL. If it takes you longer than 2 or 3 minutes to start belching, you do. She said she didnt belch at all. So she knew she needed it. She tried 1 250 mg HCL capsule plus Pepsin with meals and it was enough for her. Got rid of all her symptoms.
NOW....I didnt do this test. Do your own research and talk to your doctor. There are tests your doctor can perform to see if you have low HCL.
Natural ways to increase HCL with meals (protein meals) are vitamin B1 100 mg with each meal, to sip the juice of a lemon with water throughout your meal. OR you can use AVC (apple cider vinegar 1 Tlb with water). Some herbs also get the acids flowing: ginger, dandelion and swedish bitters. These are safer methods to try over HCL capsules. So try them first.
If you dont need extra acid, you will get a burning sensation in your stomach. Do not panic, just take some baking soda 1/4 tsp in water to neutralize the acid. If this happens, you dont need a supplement.

Three weeks ago I punched in the name of an old friend into USSearch. I paid 9.95 to get a list of addresses and phone numbers that corresponded to her name. I have done this two other times in the last 10 years and each time I diligently sent letters to each address hoping for a response. But one never came. Last time I paid to get addresses for her mother's name with the same results. Nothing.
Why was it so important that I get a letter to this old friend? I met "Robin" in the sixth grade. Her family moved into our rural community and were considered outsiders by nearly everyone and as a consequence "Robin" didnt make too many friends. She was a funny girl with big blue eyes who liked to dance even if everyone was looking. I was never much for popularity or fitting in myself, so I took to "Robin" very quickly and we became fast friends.
We did a lot of the normal things that young girls do. We talked about boys, giggled and wondered if we would ever get boobies. We had sleepovers and ate bags of Funyuns together. We climbed trees in our big pasture and star gazed at night. For 3 years she was my best friend. We were inseparable. However, there was a darker side to "Robin" and at times she would become moody and withdrawn. It was in these times that I recognized a bit of myself in her. She never wanted to talk about what pulled her away like that, and for a time, I never pushed for answers. I had my own secrets and the last thing I wanted was to lose my best friend. What would I do if she found out? Found out that my older brother had been molesting me for over 8 years. As it turns out, I would not lose my best friend at all, instead, I would find the one person who knew exactly what I was going through. The one person who would not judge. The one person who could cry with me. The one who could dream with me of a better life. An escape.
I can recall one particular sleepover at her house as if it were yesterday. She and I were jumping on the bed and making up a rhymes when her brother came into her room. He grabbed me and tried to hold me down. At that moment I saw a side to "Robin" which I had never seen before. She threw herself on her much larger and stronger brother and scratched at him until he let me go. She yelled at him, "Larry you cannotl not touch her like that!! You cannot hurt her like you hurt me!!" Woah! I knew there was more to this than horseplay. After he left, I confided to "Robin" that my own brother had forced himself on me many times. And she confessed the same to me. We were young and scared. Words like "family therapy" and "abuse counseling" were not part of the average households vocabulary. And both of us had been threatened with violence. What a sad sad place to be. So in each other, we found love, acceptance and courage. We grew up, our brothers moved out and we went our separate ways.
So I paid my 9.95 again I didnt expect this time to be any different, but I was hopeful. So off the letters went again. In the letters I told "Robin" how much she meant to me at a time in my life when I felt so alone. I thanked her and let her know that her life mattered to me and that I had never forgotten her. I asked her to call me if she wanted to. A day or so after I mailed them, I forget about it. Life goes on......
Yesterday, I took my daughter shopping after school and had a great time with her at the mall. We got home close to dinner, so I didnt check my messages on my machine until we were through eating and had cleaned everything up. Much to my absolute shock and joy I heard the words, "Hi this is "Robin H" and I am calling for Sharon B. I hope you get my message and call me back at ........" I couldnt believe it! It was her. OMG!! 27 years later and it was her!
I called the number she left right away, but got her cell recording. I left a message thinking I would not hear back from her until today. But she called me back within the hour. We talked for a good 2 hours going over what we remembered from our childhoods and where we are today. It wasnt awkward. I talked about my failed marriages, my bulimia and all of the therapy I needed to recover and get well. She also shared with me her failures and triumphs, albeit with a more sorrowful tone.
And here is where I am so deeply humbled and thankful for my life and all of the blessings I currently have. "Robin" cautiously told me the story of her life where we left off all those years ago. Her family moved numerous time from Florida to Ohio and everywhere in between. She did finish high school, but got into drugs and alcohol. She said she still works the 12 steps program. Her brother left home only to become indigent. He was arrested several times and eventually was required to serve 5 years in the state pen. He used his bed sheet one night to hang himself at the age of 31. It took her many years to come to terms with this.
She worked many different jobs, and while she didnt mind the work, she found it increasingly hard to work with "people". She suffers from extreme depression and 4 years ago was dx bipolar and is on medications and disability. She lives with her Mom and is unable to work now or be self sufficient. She said to me, "Sharon I dont have much. I've got a room, my dog and a guitar. But it's enough for me."
This made me cry because even though we both had similar childhoods, and rough lives, I got to be healed. And I have so very much: a loving husband, a beautiful daughter, 3 dogs, a nice house and a good job. And yet....sometimes I complain.
"I've got a room, my dog and a guitar. But it's enough for me"
I am deeply humbled......and forever changed.

Several other things come to mind as well: fatty acid deficiency. Too many Omega 6 (vegetable oils) and saturated fats and not enough Omega 3 (flax, fish, walnuts). And/or the inability to digest fats well. Research that. You might benefit from digestive enzymes that contain lipase to help you get the healthy fatty acids.
Also low HCL (stomach acid). It naturally decreases as we age, but can be low for other reasons (including hypothyroid):
Here are some of the common symptoms and disorders caused by low stomach acid1,3:
* Bloating, belching, and flatulence immediately after meals
* Heartburn (often thought to be caused by too much stomach acid)
* Indigestion, diarrhea, or constipation
* Undigested food in stools
* Acne
* Rectal itching
* Chronic candida
* Hair loss in women
* Multiple food allergies
* Iron deficiency
* Weak, peeling, or cracked fingernails
* Chronic fatigue
* Adrenal fatigue
* Dry skin
* Various autoimmune diseases

Oh oh oh...I found a REAL TREAT. Coconut Cream without any additives. Not even water. No gums. No preservatives. Nothing SCD illegal.
Open Original Shared Link
It is concentrated so you just add water. I cannot wait to get it. I have been making my own (used to use canned) and while it is good, it gets tiring. Geez....I already make so much from scratch. It will be nice to have something easy. With this I can make more curries, pies, custards, etc. Yippee!!
Here is the Pumpkin Smoothie Recipe:
1/2 cup pumpkin (you can use fresh baked/boiled for SCD legal)
3/4 homemade almond milk (1/2 cup plain raw almonds, 1 cup water in blender and then strained) I didnt measure this. Just whatever milk I made I used.
1/4 tsp. cinnamon (I doubled this. I like more spice!)
1/8 tsp. nutmeg (doubled in mine)
2 tsp. honey or to taste (I dont like overly sweet so this was enough for me.)
4 ice cubes
Puree in blender until smooth.
I am going to try it warm next time. Leave off the ice cubes and heat up on stove. A dollop of whipped coconut cream on the top....yummy yummy!!
P.S. I love you guys too.
