  1. Louisville has a support group. Try http:www.glutenfreelouisville.org for more information. They can recommend a physician.
  2. Whiskey is not necessarily "tripple distilled". I found only one obscure bourbon in Kentucky that is. Most are single distilled and a few are double distilled. In any event, the distillation is supposed to negate the gluten content unless the distiller mixes part of the beer back into the whiskey when barrelling or cutting to bottling streangth. Bourbon...
  3. I'm leaving for England tomorrow to try FIVE gluten free beers from three breweries. Three of the beers are from Green's, one from Hambletons and one from a beer club. I'll report back when I get an opportunity.
  4. Soy can make me dumb as a brick - unable to participate in discussion, trouble forming complete sentences, etc. Dairy (I think) has caused me to be unable to follow conversation. I found myself repeating the words in my mind instead of underanding the meaning of the message. I think the nervous system effects of these food intolerances is worse than the...

    ARCHIVED Teen Vogue

Some people are more sensitive than others and that is very unfortunate for them. But there is evidence derived from scientific testing that indicates small amounts can be tolerated by most people without damage. Look at Scott's news postings. This is in fact wonderful news for most of us because it means that commercial product manufacturers will be able...
  6. I was anemic so I bought a 180 pill bottle of iron tablets. I took one a day til they were gone and got my blood back up to normal. I also recommend greens as they contain a lot of absorbable iron.
  7. Tell the nosey companies that your money can be quite easily spent on products from other companies that don't ask such impertinent questions.
  8. I personally believe that gluten not only damages the small intestine, but any tissue it comes into contact with. Perhaps you have suffered some sort of damage that has effected your gag reflex. I suggest you go see an ENT (ears, nose and throat) specialist for an examination to ensure something else isn't going on there.

    ARCHIVED Mexican Restaurants

At my local restaurant, I get white corn (maize) tortillas. They wrap them in foil to heat them. Taste as much like flour tortillas as you could want for eating faquitas, carnitas, etc. I really missed Don Pablos hot off the griddle tortillas until I found these.
  10. Contact Dr. Fine at Enterolab. He makes personal appearances and drew our largest crowd ever. Be certain to advertise. Invite your "staff" doctor or nutritionist. You might play the "Gut Reaction" radio documentary posted elsewhere on this board.

    ARCHIVED Teen Vogue

We talk a lot about people being asymptomatic. And I know something about it because I'm one of them. That's not what I'm talking about. There has been research posted on this site that offers proof via biopsy that test subjects have consumed as much as 300 mg/day of gluten with no ill effects. I believe it is possible for some of us to pick the meat off...
  12. My calves used to sweat like mad at night. Nowhere else. When I was a teen, I had "growing pains" in my calves. The aching would keep me up for hours and was really painful.

    ARCHIVED Teen Vogue

Not everyone is as sensitive as some people report on this board. From my personal experience, small, occasional amounts of gluten cause me no reaction. I know someone who can tolerate a slice of bread. It's entirely possible for some people to pick out crutons or tolerate use of a gluten toaster or cook in a gluten pot. It's unfortunate for the very...
  14. My problem was my lifetime habit of eating everything on the table. For 43 years I was the one who ate constately and hardly gained a pound. Now that my gut has healed, I can no longer eat to excess and stay thin. I've discovered that I can indeed survive on smaller, normal portions. This has allowed me to loose about 1/3 or my gain, putting me about...
  15. I'm actually visiting SE UK in March. I've discovered there are several gluten-free beers in the UK. I'm going to enjoy them when I visist. I believe you are potentially much better off than we are in the States in terms of choice of products and labeling - that should be refreshing.
  16. AMEN!
  17. My experience is after going gluten-free my gut healed enough to allow me to absorb other foods that bother me.
  18. You can be gluten-free and CF and still get them. Mine flair up when I get behind in my sleep or poison myself. If my immune system gets low my shiners are the first thing I notice.

    ARCHIVED What Kind Of Doctor?

If your GP is on the ball and has some familiarity with celiac disease, he/she can test you. Otherwise, call around several gastroenterologists and inquire whether or not they are experienced with celiac disease. If the office says something like "that's rare" then you should try the next doctor on the list.
  20. I recommend Enterolab for celiac testing. York is really for food allergy testing. If you have a food allergy for wheat, the York test will catch that.
  21. Thank you for helping me realize how lucky I am to only have celiac disease and few IgG food reactions. I know I can eat anything once, that won't do worse, than wish it would kill me.
  22. This might be worth the small investment if tapioca flour is available Open Original Shared Link
  23. Personally, I would not stick a $60/case beer up a chicken. What you're trying to get is that malty flavor. This is pretty much impossible without beer. Near beer is also made with barley and is not gluten-free. Using wine only can be too much of a good thing. I suggest this: 2 parts chicken broth, 1 part wine like sherry or a light colored port, 1...
  24. The best foods down there all begin with a roux - fried flour. Anything with a brown sauce or gravy can be big trouble.
  25. I think the thing to do is whenever anyone calls a manufacturer, ask when they will begin complying with the new food labeling legislation. This will help them appreciate that many of their callers are concerned. It wouldn't hurt to mention how inconvenient it is not to have the labeling yet and perhaps how it makes you unsafe to buy products that are not...
