  1. holgate, I have had a similar experience. I can't tell you what is causing it, but for me, it got better after I was gluten-free for some months. If your problem persists, you really should see a GI doctor. In the meantime try this. Sit up very straight, then bend forward very slightly arching your back inward and sort of pushing your tailbone back....
  2. Michael, I visited the UK the first two weeks of March, visiting friends in various places. I was based in Fareham. I found in your stores, it is much easier to pick safe foods. The labeling is much better. It's less work to shop. Many Americans will have concerns about Codex standards and the use of wheat starch. I had no reactions the whole time...
  3. gapspan, Can't help you with the "brown glass". Perhaps you are scratching and breaking the skin. Regarding odd itching scalp. I was using a hair gell that had wheat oil or some other derivitive. I switched to something else and the odd itch went away in about a week.
  4. I used to "zone out" and had a terrible time with things like remembering peoples names or directions. I would forget both the moment I heard them. Now my concentration is vastly improved and I'm not so "linear". I can do multiple tasks simultaneously and remember all the details.
  5. christicrete - I suggest you talk to your priest with the following information. Go to www.benedictinesisters.org and consider using the low-gluten host. See if he will use it. A special pyx can be made available to you to contain and pass the host to you. You can also take the wine in a separage chalice, if he has not put any of the host in it. You...
  6. Westsoy makes a rice milk in addition to their soymilk. It's the best for coffee, I've found and the cheapest. I get it at Meijers.
  7. My experience is that different foods cause different reactions. Milk didn't cause me any diareah, but it did make me itch after four days and causes my sinuss to stop up after 30 minutes. York indicated I produce a lot of allergies to milk. I think I have both IgG and IgE reactions to it. Small amounts of soy causes itching in hours. Large amounts causes...
  8. In my opinion, the main purpose of support groups is to aid the newly diagnosed - helping them get started on their new lifestyle and return to good health. As actuate this goal, encorage more experienced members to mentor the new members and then as new members become more experienced, they in turn mentor. I believe if you do this then all the other things...
  9. I am rather sick of hearing all these disparaging opinions expressed by non-Catholics about Catholic belief. This is a Catholic matter. We're not in here belittling the belief of other denominations, so leave us be. And when I say Catholic, I mean practicing Catholic, not 'former Catholoc' or 'used to be Catholic' or 'my grandma was a Catholic' or 'I'll...
  10. York tests for IgG antibodies. These abate after a period of time of allergen abstinance, so if you have been gluten free, they may be lower for wheat. They don't test for IgA, which is the better indicator of celiac disease as well as EMA and TtG. You know you have a gluten problem (i.e. celiac disease), so continue to stay gluten-free for life. If you...
  11. It's not as simple as we would all like it to be. "Gluten" is a somewhat generic term we use to describe the collection of wheat, rye and barley proteins that bother us. There is gluten in other grains as well, like oats and corn. You will sometimes see the "corn gluten" on an ingredients label. To just say "gluten" could be confusing to others with say...
  12. I think GI docs are particularly obstinate because there's no money in celiac disease. They make all their money with the scope. If a lab test tell all that's needed, they'll go bust. And there's currently no drug company product to incent their liberal use of their prescription pad and subsequent rewards for that behavior.
  13. Wild oats puffed rice and puffed millet. Both slightly sweet, grain taste. No sugar necessary.
  14. I called CSA some months ago and suggested this. They could not have cared less. I found their attitude - arrogant.
  15. This is excellent news! Kraft always seems to be out in front of other food providers in terms of meeting our needs. I will patronize them whenever possible. I also believe other food providers will have to match or exceed this labeling technique to remain competitive in our market. This can only be good for us!
  16. Dried apricots work wonders. Also prunes, plums, apples.
  17. dmatt - I *think* you are describing Rosacea (ro-ZAY-shuh). Here is some info I found on google: Rosacea is a condition where the skin of the face becomes swollen and inflamed, leaving the skin looking red and flushed. Usually the nose, cheeks, chin and forehead are the most prone. It usually appears in fair skinned people between the ages of 30 to...
  18. The "potato press" described above is known as a potato ricer in the US. It also makes the best mashed potatoes!
  19. Sorry for the slow reply. My delay was like 5-6 weeks. I was expecting 3 weeks, especially since I paid for the faster delivery. They said their lab had "email problems". I was unimpressed with their reason. I suggest you call and complain - loudly.
  20. I suggest dried apricots. 5-10/day will dislodge most anything. CAREFUL! They cause you immediacy problems (a welcome relief for some). Don't get discouraged if they don't work immediately - once you are impacted you still have to pass that hard stool.
  21. I advise against meat tenderizers for those new to the diet. It can be hard on your stomach even if your stomach is well, much less damaged. I suggest you for go it.
  22. I too suffered a prolonged delay with some implausible excluse. The receptionist was sympathetic, but unable to actually help. I suspect the wait is on the other end (England). I think the US "branch" give a too optimistic estimate of turn around. Regarding answers to questions... I found them sloppy in their monitoring of email and "John" was hard to...

    ARCHIVED Scare Tactics

gapspan, From the spelling you used, I believe you are in the UK. I think you have special problems using the medical system and are having trouble getting a doctor within your plan to pay attention to you. If you have faithfully halted gluten consumption and are still dog sick, you should consider other foods. The most likely candidates are milk...
  24. I am now in England and am enjoying beer as I post this. Three brands are availalbe here via mail order and one is available in the grocery in Sainsbury's. I'll post more later when I can settle down and write something more objective.
