ARCHIVED What Protein To Feed A Vegan?
dilettantesteph replied to one more mile's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Quinoa is a complete protein grain, gluten free, easy to prepare and good. -
Bob's Red Mill products affect very sensitive celiacs. They are made in a mixed facility. They are very careful and do extensive cleaning and testing to ensure gluten free status, but still some very sensitive people have to steer clear.

ARCHIVED Test Negative, Diet Results Positive, What To Do?
dilettantesteph replied to abbysmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I just came back from my first GI appointment after a year gluten free. They told me about people who test negative yet have celiac symptoms and respond to a gluten free diet. Called gluten intolerance. They don't understand it, but acknowledge that those people need to be on gluten free diets too. You need to find a doctor who is aware of this, or just... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Turn Down A Biopsy For Their Child?
dilettantesteph replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I just came back from an appointment with my GI. I was self diagnosed and have been gluten free for a little over a year and my symptoms have resolved. My GI didn't think that I should go back on gluten for a biopsy. He said had I came to them, they wouldn't have done anything that I hadn't already done for myself. He didn't seem to think testing very... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Turn Down A Biopsy For Their Child?
dilettantesteph replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I must admit that I was pretty ignorant when I made these choices, but I not only refused a biopsy, I refused the blood test too. My son was ten and very scared of needles. I thought, why not just try the gluten free diet? If necessary he could always go back on later. I had no idea how hard that would be. I also had no idea how stubborn some doctors... -
It's a bit embarrassing to admit, but I was a bad bedwetter when I was a kid and also sick a lot so I think I've had celiac since then though not diagnosed until recently. I even wet my bed a couple of times in my 20's, and that was when my celiac symptoms became more apparent again with a lot of stomach pain which the doctor diagnosed as IBS. Who knows...

I think that you are probably getting gluten without realizing it. To give an example, I'll tell you about what happened yesterday with my son. He got sick but the only new thing that he had tried was Chebe bread made in a gluten free facility. We suspected two other things that he has been eating all along without problems. One of them, Amy's pizza I...

ARCHIVED Vision And Celiac
dilettantesteph replied to baldridgem's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
When I gave up gluten, one of my eyes changed from 20/40 to 20/20. The other one didn't change as much. I also need less magnification to read. Otherwise my eyeglasses prescription didn't change and my opthamologist couldn't see any reason for what she called my "apparent" vision improvement. It took about 4 months to notice the change. I see so much... -
ARCHIVED Safe Hot Sauce?
dilettantesteph replied to Sailing Girl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thai Kitchen Spicy Thai Chili has rice vinegar, is marked gluten free, and I did a home gluten test on it with a 10 ppm sensitivity that was negative. It also doesn't make me sick and I also react to grain vinegars. It will be in the international section. It is in a fairly tall bottle. Hope it works for you. -
ARCHIVED Highly Sensitive People
dilettantesteph replied to Gentleheart's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just thought that we should add the caution that companies change their formulations and processing facilities all the time and people should always do as much checking for themselves as they can. These are just leads. -
Celiac Disease And Lymphoma
dilettantesteph replied to stellar's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
There is a link. My mother died of lymphomia at 47, and I didn't figure out I had celiac till I was 48, so I freak out too. In her case she went to doctors for years with lymph problems. They kept telling her it was just a viral infection when they were probably missing signs of early lymphomia. I don't know if it can be easily diagnosed early or not... -
ARCHIVED Please Help, Daughter Diagnosed With Celiac?

Sorry, I forgot to mention that my son was 10 when he was diagnosed. -
ARCHIVED Please Help, Daughter Diagnosed With Celiac?
dilettantesteph replied to Heat's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My son took about 2 months to get back to normal. Until then he was on a special diet because GERD was one of his symptoms. No dairy, fatty foods, tomatoes, carbonated drinks, berries, citrus, chocolate, Those things all make GERD worse. Also lots of celiacs are lactose intolerant at first. He was able to add things gradually as he improved. BioK made... -

ARCHIVED Any Positives With Gluten Intolerance?
dilettantesteph replied to Spruey Stuey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
O.K. I found it: Open Original Shared Link Old News but worth reading again Study Finds Celiacs Who Don't Cheat Live Longer Enjoy a longer, heathier life! A recent study* has found that people with celiac disease who follow a strict gluten-free diet might live longer than non-celiacs, and almost certainly live longer than celiacs who cheat.... -
ARCHIVED Any Positives With Gluten Intolerance?
dilettantesteph replied to Spruey Stuey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Someone in my local support group sent around some study that indicated that the reason for celiac is a super strong immune system, and that if we don't eat gluten we live longer and get sick less. I do seem to hardly ever get sick now that I am gluten free. That would be a big bonus. I used to get everything. Sorry I deleted the link. -
I eat their donuts without problems and I am very sensitive. Are you sure your spreads were safe?

ARCHIVED Daughter Diagnosed And Now Have A Few Questions...
dilettantesteph replied to fleckapo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Just in case you don't know, playdoh, fingerpaint, and lickable stickers all contain gluten. You will have to check everything. Especially at 6 years old. Things she touches will end up in her mouth. My 11 year old kept getting sick until we made the whole house gluten free. My daughter and husband just couldn't be careful enough. Also watch out for... -
ARCHIVED Bad Mood Swings
dilettantesteph replied to Wall3424's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I tested low for vitamin D. That would be expected anyway since I live in the North and it is winter. The doctor recommended 2000 i.u. a day. I think it may have further improved my mood. Some of those mood swings are probably caused by various vitamin deficiencies caused by the intestinal problems. -
ARCHIVED Sexual Disfunction And Celiac (female)
dilettantesteph replied to hellokitty's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You don't see much talk of this particular subject in here. I did find some scientific articles out there and sexual disfunction is definitely a symptom of celiac disease. It has been for me and improves greatly after a gluten free diet, though I must admit it took months, I had forgotten it could be like that, it had been so long. The slightest glutening... -
ARCHIVED Bad Mood Swings
dilettantesteph replied to Wall3424's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My son 11 and I are both celiac and we both have that problem when glutened. It is the first thing to show up when accidentally glutened. It is much more noticeable to others than to us. My son will deny vehemently that he could possibly have been glutened when it is so obvious to my daughter and I by his grumpy behavior. Me too, I have to admit. We... -
ARCHIVED Please Help: Chickenpox And Oatmeal Bath
dilettantesteph replied to staceyh's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No. Almost all oatmeal is contaminated with gluten. There are some companies that sell gluten free oatmeal, but I haven't heard about any oatmeal baths made from them. Maybe you could make your own. -
ARCHIVED Candida Related? Doctor's Stumped
dilettantesteph replied to ilikepie's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
When the intestines are inflamed due to celiac it makes a really good environment for candida. I don't have a link for you but I found that out when I was having my own candida problems. It just keeps coming back until your intestines heal up. For that you have to make sure that you are really gluten free. The FDA has still not set the standards for gluten... -

ARCHIVED Acid Reflux Or Gerd
dilettantesteph replied to bear6954's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son's (10) GERD went away when he went gluten free. You might want to make sure everything is really gluten free. Read here for when people have reactions to some things that say they are gluten free but aren't. Not very many medicines worked for my son much for the GERD, but AXID seemed to help.
