  1. We need more information about what you mean by a strict gluten free diet. Many gluten free foods contain small amounts of gluten that are enough to cause a sensitive person to have a reaction. If you list what he eats people can tell you if it is a problem. Watch out for gluten free foods that are processed in a facility that also processes wheat. Most...
  2. My son and I both have celiac. He was diagnosed at age 10 and I was diagnosed at the same time. I don't think that horrible behavior comes from feeling bad. I think that celiac affects the brain to make you horribly unreasonable. I see it in my son and I saw it in me. I didn't even realize how unreasonable I was being until I got off gluten. That is...
  3. I wonder if the apples had wheat on them from that gluten containing produce coating to improve shelf life that we have been hearing about. The problem with the soy sauce is that you can't even test it for gluten. That home test gives false negatives for soy sauce. I have been using the Eden Organic Tamari soy sauce without trouble.
  4. I can totally relate. This diet is such a pain. If my symptoms weren't so severe, I would be back on gluten myself. I even think about it still, and I could hardly leave the house because of the uncontrollable D. How many people smoke? The consequences of smoking are more serious than celiac. How many people don't exercise and are overweight? How many...
  5. I am very sensitive and Thai kitchen has been a company that I trust. I have done a home test on their spicy thai chili and it was negative. I hope you got glutened by something else.
  6. Yes, I won't put my whole sad story here. I was such a bad tempered b. My poor kids, my poor husband. He is not the most nuturing type. When ever I was sick, somehow he was sicker. My illness really hurt our sex life. I was sick for about 30 years and married for about 14 of them. Now I am healthy again, but my marriage is still suffering the after...
  7. In a way it is good that you had the endoscopy because then you know that the problem is gluten. You just have to figure out where it is coming from. Airborne gluten will bother sensitive people like myself. When I cleaned out our kitchen and threw out the flour I was as careful as possible and still got sick for two months. Stupid me, I put it in the...
  8. Thank you for testing and for posting your results. I talked to the guy at ELISA on the phone for about 45 minutes recently. They have improved the test since the last posts. They changed the pH of the solution which prevented the false positives with vinegar containing products. It still will give false negatives for soy sauce. He said that the soy...
  9. Some celiacs have a lower tolerance for gluten than others. It takes a larger dose for some to produce antibodies and have a reaction than others. Most processed gluten free foods contain small amounts of gluten which are enough to cause a reaction in very sensitive celiacs. Average celiacs can eat them without difficulty. It looks like your daughter...
  10. Does anyone know of a strictly gluten free source for millet? besides Bob's Red Mill, as they process theirs with oats, and I react to oats. All the ones I can find process it with wheat. Thanks.
  11. You might want to eliminate gluten free foods that are processed in a facility that also processes wheat. Those are usually contaminated with small amounts of gluten.
  12. My son and I are both very symptomatic, so we know. There are small or not so small amounts of gluten in a lot of gluten free foods. High tolerance celiacs, or low symptomatic celiacs have no trouble eating them, but we can't. For instance Amy's pizza. They test it to be below 5 ppm. My son got sick from one. I tested it with a home test kit and found...
  13. It is possible that you are sensitive to very small amounts of gluten. See posts about super sensitive celiacs and that you need to be more careful with your gluten free diet.
  14. I read the about 5% of celiacs react to the gluten like protein in oats. I am one of them. I ate a serving of Bobs oats and was sick for a couple of months. That wouldn't be from cross contamination. Plus, Bobs wouldn't be that contaminated. That makes me unable to eat anything processed in a facility that processes oats too. And that isn't listed...
  15. I think it took more like 9 months. He was 10. I'm sure there is a lot of variability.
  16. My husband is also unsupportive. He just doesn't help much around the house period, no matter what I do. Before I was diagnosed, I was really sick and couldn't do much so things just didn't get done. We would be completely out of food until I could manage to get to the store. There would be no clean clothes and still he wouldn't do any laundry. Much less...
  17. It sounds a lot my son who had GERD caused by celiac disease. GERD can be helped by a diet low in acid foods. That means no chocolate, soda, citrus, fatty foods, berries, and tomato. There are over the counter medications like prilosec that helped some. What helped the most was when the doctor told us he had celiac and he stopped eating gluten. After...
  18. I guess I'm lucky for a super sensitive. It's been a little over a year and I can still eat everything but gluten and not too much dairy. I can't eat anything made on shared equipment. I can't even eat some things made on dedicated equipment. It depends on where they get their supplies. I'll weigh in on the cause of super sensitivity. At first I too...
  19. You could try another blood test after your gluten challenge. 27 isn't that high. Apparently there are other reasons than gluten intolerance or celiac for a positive blood test, but they would come and go. Something like that according to my GI doc. If your test was negative after a gluten challenge you could be pretty sure that you don't have celiac.
  20. My son's pediatrician mentioned to us that there is a connection. She asked us if we had noticed a difference and we have noticed a big one. He has just gotten over an accidental glutening and it reminded me of what things were like before. He couldn't remember anything, would forget to bring homework home, wouldn't write it in his planner, wouldn't remember...
  21. My 14 year old daughter and husband are gluten free in our home so that my 11 year old son and I don't get sick. They are happy to do it. We are both pretty hard to live with when we are sick. When we had a mixed kitchen we got sick a lot. My daughter can eat school lunches and get gluten there and my husband can have lunch out at work. Don't let those...
  22. My son and I both have problems with 5 ppm. Most people won't complain when they have problems. You can't really be certain where the problem came from. You just don't buy that item again, just in case.
  23. I couldn't stay healthy until we made our house gluten free. If we couldn't manage it without problems, with all our knowledge and personal experience, how could I ever expect someone working at a restaurant manage not to CC me? Bringing your own food seems to be the only way for low tolerance celiacs. The sooner we accept that, the faster we will get...
  24. Some of us have to be obsessive not to get sick. If you don't have to be, enjoy!
  25. I so agree with you!! The ppm's aren't that relevant though. ppm means parts per million which is a concentration. What makes you sick is a certain amount of gluten. As little as 0.5 mg of gluten can make a celiac sick according to our local celiac specialist. At 20 ppm you get that from 25,000 mg or 25 g. A serving of cereal is about 30 g. Then...
