  1. My celiac son got a gluten reaction after eating enviro kids cereal and we thought that it could be from that. I am not sure how careful they are about separating their gluten cereals from their non gluten cereals. Does anyone else know? If you search the gluten free forum for Rice Dream Rice Milk you will find some interesting results. I hope you...
  2. Straw can be used as a mulch when growing raspberries: www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/all/agdex3466 But, as lovegrov states, the canes are above ground level. My raspberries are at least 6 inches above the ground.
  3. It looks like wheat straw is used in the New Mexico Mushroom Garden: www.mycowest.org/cult/i-grow/i-grow-1.htm I personally haven't noticed any problems with mushrooms.
  4. My son was having problems with acid before we got his gluten free diet sorted out. It helped a bit to avoid acid producing foods. Try this link. heartburn.about.com/cs/dietfood/a/heartburnfoods3.html Hope you feel better soon.
  5. Sorry to hear about that. It is harder to see your child sick than to be sick yourself. At least we get to learn to be great cooks!
  6. I have found probiotics like BioK very helpful for healing with my son and I. He hates it though, and would usually go through pain and just eat yoghurt, which is also good.
  7. I am so happy to hear that. I was worried about you.
  8. It took me months to notice mood improvement.
  9. On the phone the manufacturer told me that they can be used that way. I'm only saying that they agree with the testing done by the company who made the food.
  10. Re: washing gluten. I did an experiment. I had gluten containing amaranth seeds. I washed them with rubbing alcohol, I used rubbing alcohol because gluten is soluble in strong alcohol and that was the closest thing I had. Then I washed with soap and water. I tested before and after with the test strips. Of course it is impossible to be sure that...
  11. I wouldn't hold up in a court of law. I used the EZ gluten test strip which has a 10 ppm sensitivity, I doubled the sample size which would give it a 5 ppm sensitivity. The positive indicator was very faint which would indicate that it was less than 5 ppm. I am a PhD chemist with experience developing protocol for testing foods for trace impurities.
  12. You are welcome. It sounds like you have your hands full. Personally, I haven't eaten anything ready to eat for a long time. Cooking for yourself isn't always the answer. I mentioned elsewhere on this site that I got sick from a certain dish that I made. I used McCormicks spices. Reliably gluten free, right? After getting sick I started testing...
  13. You don't mention your sons age which is significant when it comes to making up height. I have read, and remember my G.I. saying it about my son, that if you catch it before puberty thats good. Sorry no references. Apart from all that, my son was diagnosed on diet alone. He was throwing up 10 times a day, I wanted to make him better as soon as possible...
  14. So true. I want to know if it is tested and to what level. Both my son and I react to things that are tested to below 5 ppm, so the company says and so I have confirmed with my own testing.
  15. I checked with my local forum and was told that the PF Changs here only has streamed rice and vegies for vegetarian. Not too exciting. Too bad. Still could be good for my son though.
  16. The celiac sprue association has helpful information. Open Original Shared Link The first school my son went to was terrible. Once they handed out crackers during a demonstration in class and they wouldn't let my son leave, and then wouldn't let him wash up afterwards. Then when he got glutened and had to miss school the principal threatened me with...
  17. Thanks guys. I looked up PF Changs and there is one pretty close. Generally Chinese food doesn't work that well for me since I am vegetarian, but maybe I'll give it a try anyway. It would be nice for my son. It wasn't a bad glutening and I feel much improved already. It is just such a bummer not to have much to eat. It is just an acceptance thing...
  18. I use those 2 cup pyrex dishes too. I also have some French onion soup bowls that work well. I saw those spring form mini pans, but they were $$ not in my budget.
  19. I am really bummed out these days. It doesn't help that I got glutened. First, last week I found a contaminated Thai Kitchen product (less than 20 ppm gluten for those non sensitives), and then sailor girl found one too, so that confirms it, no more Thai Kitchen. That was one of my staples. Then Monday I went to the store and they no longer carry two...
  20. Yes. Good Luck.
  21. Buckwheat: www.thebirkettmills.com Cornmeal: www.kinnikinnick.com Millet: www.edenfoods.com Teff: www.teffco.com Quinoa: www.quinoa.net Rice: Lundberg Sorghum: www.twinvalleymills.com That's where I get my grains. They are also super gluten free for super sensitives like me.
  22. My son was diagnosed at age 10. He used to beat up his sister constantly, He was very ill humored. He couldn't do his school work. He couldn't remember to bring his homework home. He didn't write his assignments in his planner. Teachers kept coming down on me because I wasn't making him do his homework, but I neither of us even knew he had homework...
  23. I was diagnosed at about the same time as you. I too, felt much better immediately. I have found that as time goes on I have gotten more sensitive to smaller amounts of gluten. As my symptoms came back I had to eliminate more and more foods. Now I am one of those super sensitives and I go to crazy extremes not to get sick. At this point I have had to...
  24. With my $15 grinder I can grind flax seed, amaranth, quinoa, sorghum, teff, millet, buckwheat, and rice. I tried popcorn once and fried it. I don't recommend that! I do it partly because whole grains keep better than flours, so I can buy in bulk. Nuts didn't work well. I haven't tried beans.
