Angle, Thanks for the sympathy. It's nice to have a virtual hug to ease away some of this crummy feeling. I don't think it was touching that container, but rather any residual crumbs that clung to my arm transferring to my jaw/lip area when I rubbed my face. If that was it, I must have swallowed a bit of it. Matt, I didn't take your post as rude...

I think I'm OCD compulsive about preventing these stupid attacks, but here is another one. I'm not able to go more than 3 weeks without poisoning myself. I stayed late at the hospital last night and am paying for it now. 5:45 rolled around, and I felt a wave of pain, nausea, confusion, teariness and fatigue. Someone had microwaved a TV dinner in the next...

ARCHIVED Got My 9 Month Panel Back
SGWhiskers posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I got my 9 month panel back with some mixed results. Good: Cholesterol dropped 53 points without trying. Hurray, first time since I was 17 that everything is in the normal range. Liver numbers backin the normal range. Most Celiac numbers back in normal range TtgA still 82. Number has dropped, but still high. I have had mini glutenings every ... -
ARCHIVED 5 Days In A House With Gluten Everywhere?
SGWhiskers replied to hhdavid's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If your talking about bringing a coffee pot, I'm guessing you are not going to just go without for the week. I have 2 ideas for less luggage and potential coffee pot contamination. 1) Look into if the Coffee singles are gluten free. If not... 2) Take one of your own coffee filters, put a spoonful of ground coffee in it. Fold it into quarters. Fold in... -
ARCHIVED Is Anybody Else Furious With Reader's Digest?!
SGWhiskers replied to r0ckah0l1c's topic in Publications & Publicity
Mushroom, Funny you take offense to the Gluten Free "lifestyle" I've been starting to use the term lately because, for me, it is far more than what I eat. It is the hokey pokey dance that I do to prevent all too common accidental glutenings. I was really getting into referring to it as a lifestyle. Now you have me wondering if that term trivializes the... -
When I was diagnosed, I was taking Strattera for ADD. The manufacturer could confirm it was wheat free, but not gluten free. (they were able to confirm gluten free on another med). In my newbie state, I kept taking the Strattera, but became suspicious once I realized how strict the diet really was. I took a "vacation" from the med with my doc's permission...

Just finished cleaning up after the extended family left. I managed to get 10 adults and 2 babies through a gluten free dinner without complaints or surprise gluten. A blissful birthday indeed. Beer basted chicken, veggies, smashed potatoes. Safe chips & dip. Knickinick white cake whith a Betty Crocker adaptation that got rave reviews and home made ice...

ARCHIVED 47 And 3+ Weeks Ago It All Went Crazy
SGWhiskers replied to GB2000's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Although looking back, there were mild symptoms for 10+ years, my "mystery illness" went from normal to crisis over the course of a weekend. It hit hard enough that I went to the urgent care/ER and probably should have gone to the hospital. Good luck. -
ARCHIVED Are There Any Name Brand Frostings That Are gluten-free
SGWhiskers replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks Takala, I'm all for making frosting myself, but if I'm trying to pass off a gluten free cake to my extended family, I better stick with a frosting they think they want. If I can get the cake to pass the test this time, I'll sneak in homemade frosting next time. Your recipe is right up my ally. Simple and loaded with the good stuff. -

ARCHIVED Are There Any Name Brand Frostings That Are gluten-free
SGWhiskers posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The title says it all. Are there any name brand frostings that are gluten-free? I need one this Saturday and can't wait for the Betty Crocker gluten-free line to appear on store shelves. -
What do I look for when purchasing nuts? Here's the scoop. I can't do my own grocery shopping anymore because the bakery and several of the grocery aisles cause a gluten flare. So hubby has been doing the shopping. I'm out of nuts of my confirmed brand, and hubby says they don't carry them anymore. Nuts are expensive, and I don't want to have him buy...

ARCHIVED Will I Definitley Gain Weight?
SGWhiskers replied to Nicole H.'s topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Here's my experience. I was thin to normal my whole life. As I hit my 25th birthday, I needed to do a little weight watchers in the spring to keep myself around 130. Celiac hit hard, but was undiagnosed. My doctor told me to eat a low fiber diet and eat soft foods. I hit 145 lbs. Then plain old food allergies were diagnosed. I dropped to 125 over the next... -
ARCHIVED Day 10 Gluten Free And Lots Of Swelling
SGWhiskers replied to cjones99's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm hoping someone else responds who has had swelling. I will say that many of us have crazy symptoms 5-21 days after going gluten free. I had crazy thirst and urine output like a diabetic and was getting worried. Then it just stopped one day never to return. Keep an eye on your body, and if you think it is serious, go to the doctor. I suspect that like... -
ARCHIVED Never Knew A Glutening Could Feel So Good.
SGWhiskers posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
After getting glutened last weekend, I slept hours on end after work all week. Hubby did the grocery shopping again, fed himself and the pets all week. Drug my butt out of bed for work every morning, and reassured me in the middle of the night when I was screaming from nightmares. Thursday, I rolled out of bed after sleeping off the gluten, stumbled to... -
ARCHIVED Oops. Mixed Up Doritos
SGWhiskers replied to CtheCeliac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm so sorry about the Doritos. I hope that you get through this with lighter symptoms. I'll be joining you. I've got that old familiar feeling again after eating at a friend's house. How is your little girl feeling? -
ARCHIVED Gluten In Tocopherol (vitamin E) In Lotions, Shampoos
SGWhiskers replied to samcarter's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Burt's Bees has a gluten free list. All of their tocepherol is soy derived. Not all of their products are gluten free though, so be careful. The only way to tell the source is to call the company. I've learned to stay away from tocepherol unless the company says it is soy derived. Canned pineapple juice can have vitamin E, and the brand I bought definately... -
My sneaky gluten sources: Hand soap where I work. (darn Vitamin E) Grocery store (can't go in anymore) My rice maker (don't ask me how) Eating with my fingers (spoons for finger food now). Bird food The BBQ Anytime someone else helps with my food. My favorite tortilla chips (CC?)

ARCHIVED Toro Certified gluten-free Foods
SGWhiskers replied to mouth's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Considering I get neuro symptoms from walking past the bakery and near the flour aisle at the grocery store, I wouldn't touch that. Not a chance. -
An update to this glove problem. I'd been in the habit of trying to use my own soap when I used the restroom near my office, but when I went to do patient care, I would use the soap in the rooms. I got my hands on a bottle of the hospital soap, and low and behold: Vitamin E. Now I have a little travel Dove body wash that I carry with me from room to room...

Hubby was out of town this week, so I ate up the leftovers and then moved on to rice chex, soy milk, and orange juice exclusively for the past 3 days. Tonight, I fixed us a mashed potato dish with onions, green beans, lima beans, corn, and carrots. After 3 bites, my belly got sharp pains under my diaphram for 3 minutes. I don't even get belly pain from gluten...

ARCHIVED Everyday Minerals Is Staying Gluten-free
SGWhiskers posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Everyday minerals changed the formula of their lipglosses and added vitamin E. I panicked and wrote the company. The response was that the Vitamin E is soy derived. Hurray for most of us. Also, the representative shared that one of the owner's children is "allergic" to gluten. I suspect that that will mean continued gluten free products. In other news... -
ARCHIVED What Is With All The "look Out For Gluten In ~ Insert Toiletry Item~"
SGWhiskers replied to mattathayde's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I thought of this thread as I was reading the label on the soap at work today. My hands have been chapped and lizardy looking for the longest time. I was blaming the latex gloves at work. Then I was blaming the Nitrelle gloves. I found a bottle of the soap used in all the dispensers at the hospital and there it was Tocepherol Acetate. The sneaky little devil... -
ARCHIVED Bad Reaction Tonight Even While Being Careful.
SGWhiskers replied to Arcolite's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It is so frustrating when you are careful and still get sick. Consider cc on your hands with the apple too. I get cc consistently if I don't use utensils for eating. Take care. Snuggles and pepto wishes for you.
