  1. Like, did you know there's a B12 gum and a liquid calcium/magnesium supplement? My doc had no idea. I went searching for vitamins that I could easily swallow or grab on the go. Calcium pills are ridiculously huge and hard to swallow so I found a liquid. B12 (the kind that dissolves) often contains lactose so I found a gum I can chew that is gluten/soy/dairy...
  2. I was 2 lbs from being officially underweight before I went gluten-free. Yes, I've gained 20 lbs, but I'm now right in the middle of where my BMI should be. The weight came on when I hit the must eat nonstop phase. My attitude about it was that I would eat the healthiest most nutrient rich foods for two years and if I gained weight, then my body must have...
  3. I went to the Bavarian Inn last winter and had a great experience. I asked for the Gluten free menu right when we got to the host station. They showed us to our table and then the manager or chef came out. The waitress was extremely careful and they did all the little things right. I forget the whole experience, but I remember that was the safest I've felt...
  4. My reactions have become weaker and weaker the longer I've been on the diet. The pros are that a mistake does not cost me sick time and terrible pain at work. The cons are that I might wind up doing accidental damage because I'm slowly becoming a "silent" Celiac again. I'm at 21 months and I wind up with the same/similar symptoms to my peak levels of misery...
  5. Shortly after my diagnosis, I sent out a mass e-mail to family and close friends. In it, I had a description of Celiac disease, a description of how gluten affects me, and why dispite their great cooking, I would be bringing my own food from now on. I emphasized that their company was what was important to me and that I would say no when they offered to cook...
  6. I've been gluten free for 19 months. Unlike many other posters, my reactions to accidental gluten in the first weeks of the diet got a little less severe with each accidental glutening. I'm to the point now that my symptoms are so subtle that I would almost consider them silent. Either that or I'm great at avoiding gluten and something else is giving me...
  7. My go to is a pint of fruit (strawberries usually), 1/3 a container of silken tofu, a good splash of soy milk & or 100% juice and maybe a spoonful of sugar or honey. Blended at night and poured into a tall glass in the AM. I go for quick and easy and leave the stems on and just blend a few seconds longer. Variations on that theme are with multiple fruits...
  8. I posted this question a few days ago in the post diagnosis section. I was hoping you knowlegable folks could help me out. I'm headed in for my annual physical next week. I'm 18 months on the diet and wondering: A) What tests are the appropriate follow up Celiac tests? Do I need the whole panel drawn if my numbers were dropping the last 2 times I had...
  9. The first couple months of being gluten free I didn't believe that I really needed to be as strict as I do. Apparently, I prefer to learn things the hard way. I made all kinds of mistakes the first few months until I switched to fresh meat, fresh fruit/veg, and minimal fresh potatoes rice. I swallowed my pride and packed a lunch for events where I needed...
  10. Before I went on the gluten-free diet, I had terrible neuro issues. In the first weeks of making mistakes, I noticed that my reaction to gluten was less severe each time. Has anyone gone from a severe neuro response to silent or near silent response with time on the gluten-free diet? I'm concerned that the "off" feeling I'm having is actually gluten.
  11. I'm headed in for my annual physical next week. I'm 18 months on the diet and wondering: A) What tests are the appropriate follow up Celiac tests? Do I need the whole panel drawn if my numbers were dropping the last 2 times I had the full panel. Should I expect normal numbers by this point? C) If I still don't feel "normal" any other blood tests that...
  12. Things I've learned through this board or experiences with getting rid of the gluten: I ignored everyone here and did as you did with my Calphalon pans except I used rubbing alcohol instead of comet. I was afraid of scratching them, and read somewhere that gluten was alcohol soluable. I scrubbed intil the paper towel didn't pick up tinges of brown. My Calphalon...
  13. I'm thinking you should have called her at 2:30, 3:30, and 4:30 am to share you bathroom issues with her. I am appalled. I hope you let the rest of the family know how sick you got from her nastiness. She is the first person I have wished celiac disease upon. May migraines and bathroom visits teach her to be more sensitive.
  14. Good for you for taking the chance. It sucks she said no, but nothing ventured, nothing gained. Taking the risk is a win in my book. Also, rest assured, I'm staying away from dating advice for a while.
  15. I agree with the "Holy Crap! Dude you're in" statement. I think the picture was her way of safely signaling she would like to get to know you better. Granted, I married my highschool sweetheart and have 0 dating experience. I'll confess as well that I dated and married my husband for his mind, sensitivity, and values not for his looks. I would have made him...
  16. I'm sorry you are dealing with so many health problems. It really takes a toll on our stress levels when our bodies turn on us. I hope you get through some of them as soon and easily as possible. Before I start my post, I want to make two things clear. First, I am not a doctor and speaking with your doctor about your symptoms is the only advice I can...
  17. I'm deducting mine from my empmloyer's flexible spending medical account. The same one I deduct my prescription and office visit expenses from. That way, it does not have to be above the 7.5% mark. I just need to set aside the right amount of money at the beginning of the year and check with my HR department to make sure they consider gluten-free food expenses...
  18. When I went on the gluten-free diet, I expected to gain weight from what I had read. I decided my health was more important than my weight. My long range plan was, and remains, to eat what my body needed for 2 years while I healed. After that time, I would diet as necessary. Well, the first 3-6 months, I was ravenous and gained 10 lbs. The next 9 months...

    ARCHIVED Made A Dent

One of the doctors I work with noticed me carrying around a bag of cookies for my patients today. This led to a good natured teasing and into a conversation about Celiac. One of the residents said I was the first I'd ever met, and I shared the 1/100. I could tell by the faces from the doctors I was with that they were taking inventory and storing that number...
  20. My dreams were always violent with either me hurting someone, something terrorizing me, or something hurting someone I know before going gluten free. When I was at my sickest, I had a lot of physical pain and the dreams increased in intensity and I would wake up screaming. It still happens with even the slightest gluten. PMS also increased the violence some...
  21. I sent hubby to the store for a refill of Starbucks Sumatran Roast. He couldn't find it and brough home a bag of Sumatran roast from the pull and pour bulk coffee dispensers at the grocery store. We will grind it at home. I know we can't have items from the scoopable cereals and candies bulk food due to CC. What do you think about the coffee? Drink it...
  22. OK, what you SHOULD do is call ahead to the chef at 2:00-4:00 in the afternoon that day and explain your order of plain steak, veggies, and baked potato. Request that he make your dinner and deliver it discretely and emphasize the allergy part. Then when you get to dinner, try to sit at the corner of a table so you can catch your waitress or get up more easily...
  23. I'm a light weight too and overly paranoid about consuming anything prepared outside of my kitchen. My standbys are If I don't know what to order, white wine. Socially appropriate in every situation and you can sip one glass all night if you don't want to drink much. If I'm in the mood for something daring I'll order a "Black Russian" (Vodka and...
  24. I e-mailed Aveda a month ago and they gave a pretty disappointing response considering 18 months ago, I received a detailed list from them with items containing major allergens. Also, in regards to topical skin products and gluten. I think most of us have leiarned the hard way that it really does matter if there is gluten in it. For me, it was applying...
  25. OK, just a warning. There is about to be TMI (too much information) shared here about "digestive" problems. Skip out now if you are tender. I'm diagnosed with Celiac and have responded fairly well to the diet. My main symptoms were neurologic and I had very little "digestive" upset with the exception of a 3 month window early on and a 1 month window where...
