  1. I don't know how prevalent this kind of thing is, but I've had a similar experience. The upside is that I now double-check EVERYTHING on the Internet... side effects of medications, typical procedures, normal and optimal ranges, etc... Two weeks ago I had surgery to remove a lymph node (turned out to be benign, thank God), and I used the Internet to figure...
  2. What kind of medication are you taking? Some things are very hard on the liver, so you need to be monitored carefully... ask your doctor what kind of number would make him/her worry!
  3. All of these ideas have been so helpful! I'm leaving for California next week. I bought some new travel-size containers to stick in my quart-size ziploc By the way, Fiddle-Faddle... your suggestion about the immersion coil got me thinking about small appliances I figured out a solution to the hotel situation (drumroll, please)... a tiny George Foreman...
  4. Welcome to the group Cool! I'm sorry you're having problems with allergies too, but you're the first person I've "talked" to that also has a celery allergy. Unfortunately, I'm still having some problems. I had another anaphylactic reaction two weeks ago. At this point, my theories are: 1) that I have a problem with all the "umbelliferae" (celery...
  5. I agree with you on the antigliaden, but Ttg? Do you have a source to back that up? How do you know that? Also... what kind of accommodations were you asking for?
  6. In October my eyes became really sore... bloodshot, blurry vision (especially in the evening), feeling gritty... worse than anything I'd ever experienced. The opthamologist said my corneas were scratched from being too dry... here's a prescription for eye drops (which helped a LOT). I was worried that I might be developing Sjogren's Syndrome. It took me...
  7. I know what you mean My daughter was totally potty-trained, but she started having accidents at school from all the gluten (diarrhea). If you think the endoscopy will be helpful don't feel bad about it! My son had to have a spinal tap last summer and it came back positive for meningitis... sometimes a little short-term suffering is necessary for the greater...
  8. My personal experience on this is with casein (the protein in cow's milk)... My son is very sensitive to casein. By the time he was six weeks old he had colic, projectile vomiting, and green diarrhea with streaks of blood... this was during exclusive breastfeeding (we held off on solids until he was six months old). Thank goodness for the Internet...
  9. The flushing, migraines, and red eyes make me think of allergies... could be environmental (pollen, dust mites, mold) or food-related (MSG, sulfites, histamines, etc...). Have you ever had allergy testing? It's good to explore a lot of different possibilities... celiac, neurological, allergies, etc... It's possible that your problems are connected...
  10. Welcome to the group! This is just my opinion... but I think the "gold standard" of endoscopy is overrated. Your son had a positive blood test and you're on the verge of a positive test. What will the endoscopy tell you that you don't already know? I guess it could tell you exactly how much damage you have and look for other problems (ulcers, lymphoma...
  11. Are you a woman? How old are you?
  12. Have you ever had your thyroid checked? Hyperthyroidism cranks up your metabolism to a very fast pace... which obviously makes it difficult to gain weight (I'm assuming you've tried the really calorie-dense foods like coconut, avocado, and nuts). The bad thing is that it can also put a strain on your heart and cause osteoporosis... so definitely worth checking...
  13. I think your doctor is on the right track checking your thyroid and adrenal glands. Congratulations on finding one who seems to know what they're doing!
  14. What kind of formula are you giving her? It should be gluten-free, but maybe she has a problem digesting dairy and/or soy. My son is extremely sensitive to casein, so we started giving him soy milk (just the regular kind... not formula) and coconut milk. The great thing about coconut milk is that it has a lot of medium-chain fatty acids for good brain...
  15. Have you been doing some weight-lifting lately? I'm not sure what exactly causes stretch marks (if it's related to vitamin deficiencies), but during puberty when I was growing really fast I got them all over my knees, hips, and breasts... and then on my abdomen when I was pregnant. They are pretty ugly for a while. Sorry. After a year or two the...
  16. I just had my daughter (who turns four next month) tested with a blood test. I was giving her lots of gluten for the last two months! Noodles, sandwiches, crackers... Her test came back negative, BUT she is making a small amount of tissue transglutaminase (both IgA and IgG) which is pretty specific for celiac disease. Thinking about everything I've read...
  17. Your list looks pretty safe... but I'm not the best judge, since there are only a couple of processed foods I can still eat Have you considered that you might have another food intolerance? I can't eat corn (or anything derived from corn) because it gives me the same kind of abdominal pain as gluten. Dairy, soy, and nightshades are also common problems...
  18. Flushing can also be from angioedema and/or hives, a sign of allergies. Have you ever had allergy testing? My daugther gets red ears when she eats almonds.
  19. Just a quick note... Celiac disease is not a true allergy (IgE mediated), so the standard treatments for allergies... like antihistamines (Benadryl, Claritin, etc...) and low-dose steroids... won't help.
  20. I also have an itchy rash that seems related to food (allergies/intolerances), but the biopsy said it was not DH... a biopsy is the only way to know for sure. Another clue is the location of the rash. I get it on mostly on my hands and places where clothing rubs against my skin (upper arms, waistband). DH tends to cluster on the knees and elbows.
  21. Were ttg and total IgA the only tests on your celiac panel? Ttg is very specific for celiac disease, but anti-gliaden is also a good test because it indicates gluten intolerance. (BTW - your total IgA is just fine... it's only a problem if it's too low or way, WAY out of range on the high end). After I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism last year I started...
  22. Hmmm... and the celiac.com website is currently sponsored by Rice Chex, "Gluten Free Beauty," Alba Therapeutics, and "The Gluten-Free Mall." Another conspiracy? Honestly, there ARE differences between the websites that provide NO scientific data or links to external articles (like this one, for example: Open Original Shared Link and genuinely useful websites...
  23. Yes... I understand that genes do not CAUSE disease, they only increase your risk. Celiac has to be triggered by something like pregnancy, trauma, overuse of antibiotics, a virus, etc... Sorry about the momentary sloppiness. The vitamin D council is not selling anything. It has extensive links to scientific (RE: peer-reviewed) articles on just...
