  1. Maybe rosacea? 30-50 years old is the most common time to be diagnosed. Although it's often called "adult acne," it's actually an inflammatory disorder. Do you blush easily? Is your skin sensitive to sun, wind, soap, skin care products, etc...? A good dermatologist could be very helpful.
  2. Thanks for sharing your experience! I have been thinking about Sjogren's... but I guess I didn't know how "bad" was bad. Do you need a prescription for the eye gel? I wish my thyroid condition had been discovered a LONG time ago. I was having symptoms (hair loss, heavy periods, extremely low blood pressure) as a teenager, but nobody thought to check...
  3. Today I went to the eye doctor. There's an opthamology school at the university where I teach... what great (and extremely thorough) care they provide! I wish more of my doctors were like that Anyway... I've been having problems with dry eyes for several years, especially since I had LASIX surgery in 2000 (I was severely nearsighted). Any kind of...
  4. I love that stuff! I was so excited when I realized I could still have it this year!!!!
  5. Two thoughts... 1. Your symptoms do sound like hypothyroidism. I think it's great that you asked to be tested! 2. Did they check for thyroid antibodies? (TPO, TgAb) The pituitary gland produces TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), so I would be worried that your TSH does not accurately reflect how your thyroid is functioning. If you don't have any...
  6. If it is DH... and that sounds like a distinct possibility... then the ointment you need is Dapsone. If you can get in to see one, a dermatologist could be very helpful.
  7. Yes, that's my understanding too... you don't get false positives, just false negatives. Diagnosed celiacs are supposed to keep having these tests to make sure they're sticking to the gluten-free diet. I would skip Enterolab (unless all you're planning to get is the genetic test). Has anyone suggested endoscopy? Since they're identical twins you might...
  8. Your message made me smile... because that's exactly what our house is like!! My daughter does NOT want daddy unless he's doing something really fun (wrestling, having ice cream, etc...). My eight-month-old son, on the other hand, is perfectly happy with either one of us... whoever is free. I used to think there was something wrong with the way we handled...
  9. Welcome to the group! Is there something specific that worries you about your daughter's moods? The reason I ask is because my daughter is VERY dramatic. I think she has a bright future as an actress or some kind of performer Once when she was two years old she was SO mad because I wouldn't let her have popcorn out of my bowl... so she took her...
  10. It is confusing... and sometimes a source of tension on this forum If you have celiac disease, it means you have an autoimmune reaction to gluten that is destroying your intestines. Gluten intolerance is different... it can cause and be related to autoimmune disorders, but not always. For example, candida infections can cause food intolerances and...
  11. Wikipedia has some good information about this... Open Original Shared Link There are two different beta types of DQ2: B*0201 and B*0202. The first one puts you at risk for celiac disease (and type I diabetes)... the second one does not. Tricky! One important thing however, is that your version of DQ2 and the DQ9 gene still put you at risk of gluten...
  12. The cross-cultural thing is tricky too... My husband is from the Ivory Coast. We've been married almost 12 years, but I've never met his parents. I really, REALLY do want to meet them, I just wonder what they're going to think about our eating habits. I'm not too worried about the dairy or corn... it's the gluten. The Ivory Coast used to be a French...
  13. I love this place too! :) I don't have a lot of support in the small town where I live... this forum has really helped me learn about gluten intolerance... plus casein intolerance, other food intolerances, thyroid issues, and autoimmune disorders! I wish I had known about it when we first figured out that our son is intolerant to casein.
  14. My eight-month-old son is really sensitive to casein... and since I'm still breastfeeding him that means no milk, no cheese, no yogurt, no ice cream, etc... for either one of us. I'm a bit amazed that I've been able to pull this off... I grew up in Wisconsin!! It's totally worth it to keep him healthy and happy. What helped me is finding substitutes...
  15. I love the t-shirt idea! Sometimes I'm grateful that we live two states away from my parents and an ocean away from my husband's parents... by the time my kids are old enough for a visit without Mom and Dad they'll be much more aware of what they can't or shouldn't eat. I can TOTALLY see my mom offering the wrong "treats." She has insulin-dependent...
  16. Right. I do wonder though... how closely do manufacturers really follow the law? What are the penalties for breaking it? I know companies overseas (in China, for example) are supposed to comply with US labelling regulations, but there's not much oversight at the borders.
  17. Would "Daddy's Famous Spicy North American Super Tasty Burrito Salad" not be the same with fresh mushrooms? I bet if you sauteed them in a little olive oil you would never know the difference. My guess is that the canned mushrooms are packed in "vegetable" broth containing wheat and lots of salt. Otherwise, canned mushrooms would have very little...
  18. My daughter is three and half years old. She's definitely sensitive to gluten... I've been cutting as much as possible out of her diet. She's eats a really great variety of foods, but she did have a lot of eczema as a baby. Anyway... last night was the first time my daughter had pumpkin seeds (as far as I know). We noticed that she had a rash around...
  19. I used to think tiny amounts of gluten were no big deal... as long as I wasn't eating any obvious sources of gluten I thought I was fine. However, as my body has healed I really notice when I have a tiny bit. My last glutening (which must have come from cross-contamination) gave me diarrhea and a headache. A lot of people have even worse reactions... terrible...
  20. Actually, your thyroid labs from 10/20/08 look pretty good! Free T3 above the normal range and Free T4 in the mid-normal range. But... I've read that if you still have an antibody attack going on, these numbers are not very helpful. How do you feel thyroid-wise? Having fat in your diet is not a bad thing Seriously. What matters is the type of fat...
  21. What are the specific genes you have? I have two thoughts about the difference between you and your sister: 1) Maybe your sister was diagnosed with celiac, but doesn't have the "celiac" genes... it can happen! Do you know what your sister's diagnosis was based on? 2) Each parent can only pass on one gene... it's a 50/50 toss-up. What if you inherited...
  22. That really is low cholesterol! And it might explain some of your symptoms, since cholesterol is needed for: 1. Formation and maintenance of cell membranes 2. Formation of sex hormones (progesterone, testosterone, estradiol, cortisol) 3. Production of bile salts, which help to digest food 4. Production of vitamin D during exposure to...
  23. How boring this forum would be if everyone had to qualify their advice by listing every test and diagnosis they've ever had (or haven't had)! I totally agree... whether you have an official diagnosis of celiac or not... that you should seek medical advice if you think there's something wrong with your health. I've had some BAD experiences with doctors...
  24. One other thought... You said your total cholesterol is 83. What is your HDL? 35 is the recommended lower limit, but 50 or higher is best for good health. Have you ever tried flax oil or fish oil for omega 3s? Other good sources include salmon, hemp, walnuts, and organic eggs. That could help with your fatigue and lower back pain. gfpaperdoll...
  25. Hi Amy, I'm amazed at the similarities between us! Your list of symptoms is almost EXACTLY like mine before I stopped eating dairy, gluten, and corn. I decided to give it a try after I was diagnosed with autoimmune hypothyroidism and I kept reading about connections with gluten intolerance. I was already off dairy (my eight-month-old son... who I...
