Hi all So, while I have so far avoided any real testing aside from initial screening for Celiac a few years ago (I'm technically self-diagnosed, with clear evidence), I think it's time I was properly tested/screened for the other food intolerances that are popping up. I seem to be intolerant to casein, soy, and possibly eggs, quinoa, and who knows what...

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Have Bad Reactions To Quinoa?
Pegleg84 replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
FYI: I started another thread (linked to this one) on this topic here: Some new relevant info coming out there, I hope. Something to do with lectin (which is also in milk, grains, nightshades, etc) Would be good to have a comprehensive thread/guide to the quinoa challenged. -

ARCHIVED Quinoa? Seriously? What's The Deal?
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, the egg thing doesn't make much sense to me either, but it's listed along with the lectin problem foods, so there must be something about them that's related. That's the best explanation for why I have trouble with them. I still (fingers crossed) seem to be ok with nightshades. I am starting to take digestive enzymes and keep up with my probiotics... -

ARCHIVED Quinoa? Seriously? What's The Deal?
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
(whoops! Just realised i meant to post this in the Other Food Intolerances forum...) Thanks Lisa! Yeah, I'm not about to throw myself into that ordeal, but I'm glad you figured it out. this would, however, explain why I can't handle eggs. Maybe it's just the high-protein stuff that's getting to me. In any case, I might try to see an allergist/immunologist... -

ARCHIVED Quinoa? Seriously? What's The Deal?
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Lisa Interesting about the lectins. What other foods do you have trouble with? and how do you react when you eat quinoa or other lectin-y foods? -

ARCHIVED Quinoa? Seriously? What's The Deal?
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh, and quinoa is actually a seed, from a plant related to things like beets. But it grain-like in its protein content, etc. -

ARCHIVED Quinoa? Seriously? What's The Deal?
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Lectin eh? Interesting... Here's some good reading on lectin toxicity: Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Anyone else know about lectin and its potential problems? I also have trouble with eggs? Could this be why? Nightshades, so far, don't bother me as long as they're cooked properly. I LOVE eggplant, eat lots of peppers, and... -
So, I started becoming slightly suspicious of quinoa recently. It never quite sits right, like I can't seem to digest it properly. But it's supposed to be so good for you! Maybe it being so high-protein is a problem for me. Who knows? I made a nice batch of it last night, cooked with spices and veggies and other goodness, and it left me with bloating...

ARCHIVED Questions About The Pill, Acne & Casein- Need Some Science!
Pegleg84 replied to MitziG's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Mitzi This is strange, and interesting. Unfortunately I have no science for you, I don't think. I know when I'm off the pill, my face explodes. Something to do with the hormones in the pill making you think you might be pregnant. Increased estrogen, and whatever the other chemicals are? Perhaps these are also strengthening your system or something... -

ARCHIVED Probiotics And Digestive Enzymes?
Pegleg84 replied to Kirstie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Reviving this thread a bit. I've also been thinking of trying digestive enzymes, as I have added casein and soy to my list of intolerances, and my stomach seems to still have trouble with grains and proteins. I looked at a local natural dispensary yesterday, and the choice is almost overwhelming. The ones reccomended to me were pretty pricey, so I decided... -
This totally made my day! Thanks!

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Stomach Pain
Pegleg84 replied to monkeyface's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
First bit of advice: cut out the gluten as much as humanly possible. You're probably having trouble with gluten-free bread because (depending on what it's made of) it can contain a lot of stuff your body probably isn't familiar with yet -bean flours and such. If you're still eating gluten deliberately, then you haven't given your body time to a: heal from... -

ARCHIVED New Planet
Pegleg84 replied to RonSchon's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
New Planet IPA (tread lightly?) is my favourite gluten-free beer so far... unfortunately, I can't get it here so am savouring the few bottles brought back to me from the US. Would love to try the raspberry (especially since my beer-supplier is always taunting me with the gorgeous raspberry ale he keeps drinking...) Oooh beer... New Planet is an organic... -

ARCHIVED gluten-free Beer
Pegleg84 replied to nvsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm not sure what you can get in Alberta, but if Nickelbrook is available, it's my go-to gluten-free beer, and passes my "actually tastes like beer" test. And made in Ontario. Even my Mom likes it (and she never drank beer before going gluten-free) La Messagiere and New Grist are pretty bland, so if you were a dark/amber/favourful beer person, they're not... -

ARCHIVED Montreal And Quebec City
Pegleg84 replied to Coolclimates's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Buckwheat crepes! But make sure to ask if they use a different grill than the wheat ones. It's always hard when I go to Montreal these days because it's so full of wonderful breads and cheese and poutine and more things I can't eat any more, but it's an exciting city, and Quebec city is gorgeous. Just bring snacks and don't be afraid to ask lots of questions... -

ARCHIVED Dairy, Lactose, Casein, Milk
Pegleg84 replied to GF Lover's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hey. I'm going dairy/casein free too. It's taken a while for me to finally accept that I can't eat it anymore (suuucks!) I'm pretty sure my problem is casein since I seem to have trouble with goat's milk cheese too. If you find out it's just lactose that bothers you, then you should be ok. If it's casein, then yes, just treat it like gluten and avoid all... -
In my slow acceptance for even more restrictions on my diet (eggs other than in baked goods are now officially off my menu as well), I was taking a look for a good cookbook with gluten/milk/soy/egg free recipes. There are gluten-free vegan cookbooks, but they include a lot of soy. Anyone know a good book or online resource? Cheers Peg

ARCHIVED Need To Eat Gluten Free But Cant Afford It
Pegleg84 replied to ScarlettsMommy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
(so spaghetti squash is called that for a reason, eh?) As the other posters have said, eating gluten free isn't just substituting the foods we normally eat, it's changing your diet and lifestyle completely. You cook from scratch more, eat pre-prepared food less, and only get good gluten-free items as occasional treats. Buy foods that are naturally gluten... -

ARCHIVED Oh, It's Just The New Thing!
Pegleg84 replied to KMMO320's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, I get a lot of this too. More people are eating gluten free even though they don't have Celiac or an intolerance. I'm not saying it's not healthier to eat gluten free, I just think you're crazy to do it if you don't have to! I inherited Celiac from both sides of my family. My aunt developed thyroid cancer partially due to undiagnosed celiac. It... -

ARCHIVED Lactose And Casein ...
Pegleg84 replied to Annie June's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I'm also trying to figure out, still, if I'm intolerant to lactose or to casein (leaning toward casein). When I eat milk products (unfortunately, including goat and sheep, though not as bad as cow) I get similar symptoms to glutening, but more of a brain-fog rather than stomach issues. Lactose intolerance supposedly causes more stomach problems (cramping... -

ARCHIVED What Does It Feel Like When You Can't Tolerate Eggs?
Pegleg84 replied to mesmerize's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Yey for revived threads! I've also been finding I have problems with eggs, not to the same degree of seriousness as most of you (yet), but an hour our so after eating, say, fried eggs or an omelet or anything primarily eggy, I get weak/jittery, lightheaded, a bit nautious, almost like I haven't eaten anything or didn't absorb any of it. I figured its some... -

ARCHIVED Beer!
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What kind of beer did you have? I'm kind of skeptical about the "gluten-removed" barley beer (hence the "sketchy") and if you had a reaction to it, that's not a good sign (and agreed. Barley malt is gluten, even in small doses. Probably shouldn't be having it. Who knows, that could have contributed to your reaction to the beer?) Cheers Peg -

ARCHIVED Beer!
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've become quite the cider drinker myself. that's a whole other topic. I heard about La Messagiere Rousse, but still haven't had chance to try it (next visit to Quebec?) Nickel Brook is an Ontario brewery, and they just started making it last year sometime. It's become pretty common in Ontario (GTA at least), and comes in cans as well as bottles. Not... -
Hello All One of the hardest things for me to give up when I went gluten free was beer. For the past three years I've more or less given up on there ever being an adequate substitute. Living in Canada (even in Toronto), access to anything resembling beer has been highly limited. There are 3 we can get: La Messagiere (this is like beer how?), New Grist...

ARCHIVED Soy Intolerance? What Else?
Pegleg84 replied to AJ Leigh's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Bubba's Mom, and everyone else. I've also recently started to suspect soy as another problem food for me, along with dairy (likely Casein intolerance rather than lactose intolerance). I've been on the gluten-free diet for nearly 3 years, and have been much better. If I accidentally get into gluten, I get some gastrointestinal and other mild symptoms...
